    Default Another stripping documentary...

Pretty much a total waste of time, but mildly entertaining at times. Mostly focuses on black strippers (that's not why it's a waste of time). Dancing interspersed with commentary from the dancers.

Thought I'd share in case anyone else has some time to kill...

Is it just me, or does Method Man look sexier with age? Nom nom nom....I didn't watch this all the way through yet, just the intro, but I'll definitely give it a watch. I'm still waiting for something to top G-string Divas. That was my favorite back in the day.

It used to come on HBO back in 2000ish and there was a series of episodes. I've never seen it brought onto Hulu yet.

I think I saw this years ago. I recall a number of these scenes, & Freaky Red. I wonder if she is still dancing?

    Melonie, congrats on your documentary!

^^^ actually many of my own contributions to that documentary wound up on the cutting room floor ... but most are added back as a bonus feature on the DVD.

I thought it was interesting how Method Man defended strippers toward the very end of the documentary and actually made some very meaningful points.

Agreed, I mean it kind of landed flat for me considering that 1) most of the documentary, depicting strippers working, was clearly intended to titillate the audience and 2) in his closing speech, Method Man waxed poetic about how these women's situations must be even worse than drug dealers' situations, which is why they choose to get into the industry...but I generally liked the honesty of the women's comments and MM's final thoughts.

I agree with you, but overall I think the documentary was well intended and that's what is most important to me. You get those people out there trying to make dancers look like twenty dollar whores and while I've heard of that in *some* places, it isn't ALL strippers. He got an honest perspective from a sampling of the population, and while it may not accurately represent 'white' or 'mixed' ethnicity clubs, the women in the documentary were still dancers, and they also had *some* of the same beliefs as the women on SW! The *majority* agreed it was a job, they had normal lives, they had goals, they hustled hard and weren't lazy, and that you shouldn't date customers. I saw some girls talking about dating customers, drunk at work, and I heard a few references to ITC hooking which displeased me--but that's still an accurate portrayal of those women's work environment!! I thought overall the documentary was positive because they weren't out to bash strippers, they wanted to help people understand strippers and their situations.

I can't bash their efforts, even if they went about it in an odd way!

^ Totally agreed. He tried to hide the peas in the mashed potatoes. And succeeded to a degree.

I was disappointed within the first few minutes when ... I don't know her name, the Latina stripper? ... Said she was miserable and couldn't keep a man and was distant from her family and BLAMED it on stripping ... totally not the sole reason for those issues, and it makes it look like if you have that job you're just fucked as a person. Didn't watch past that.

Yeah, that turned me off too. But the documentary actually does do a pretty good job of including a number of perspectives past that point.
