Thumbs down Antibiotics and Yeast infections?

When I went to my doctor to talk about Spiro for my hormonal acne, she said she'd never heard of Spiro being used for that purpose, and prescribed me Minocycline, an antibiotic specific for acne.

Well, my face certainly has cleared up quite a bit, my hormonal acne is a lot less noticeable (but still there), I still have body acne, especially on my chest, though I suspect a lot of my chest acne is sweat-related since I've been working out a lot.

But what's worse is that whenever I take an extended-prescription of antibiotics, I always end up with a terribly itchy yeast infection! I don't have any abnormal discharge (yet...? *knock on wood*) but my poor kitty's red and super itchy.

And this is a 30 day prescription (twice daily) that my doctor advised I extend to 50-60 days by only taking a pill once daily!

I plan on stopping the antibiotic for now, going to the doctor tomorrow (the infection HAD to start on the weekend, ARGH) and bringing with me tons of printed evidence that Spiro is the way to go for hormonal acne. In the meantime my doc also gave me a 5% benzoyl peroxide/1% clindamycin phosphate ointment that I can put on once or twice a day. I just put it on before I go to bed.

Am I unique in that I always get yeast infections when I take antibiotics? Please tell me I'm not

I can't even take Diflucan with antibiotic yeast infections. It just doesn't work.

Pfeh. Please send advice, ladies. I'm gonna go overdose on yogurt.

Antibiotics stopped working for my acne. But I was on it for more than 60 days.

You're not alone. Antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria. I use raw garlic to treat infection. I make slits in the garlic and put it in over night. If it's mild then that's all I need. Also helps with bv which is sometimes mistaken for yeast infection. I've heard your body can become resistant to different antibiotic treatments.

I hope you get spiro easily. I've been having trouble getting it. Been to 6 different doctors. I have hormonal acne because of PCOS. If you do too you might want to get a letter from your gyno stating that you have it.

I was on that medication in the past & it gave me yeast infections too. I would stop taking it. It also makes your teeth kinda blue. I would take Spiro in your case.

i always got thrush after a strong course of antibiotic. stock up on anti-thrush cream and start applying it as you start the cause of antibiotics. it helped prevent my next outbreak. bepanthen [oilment for nipple/nappyrash and post-tattoo applied also soothed the symptoms.]

but yeah cant go wrong with yoghurt

I find taking a diflucan and doing the 7 day canestan cream is the only thing that blasts it to never return. Also how annoying about your doctor... I was thinking uhhh just google it and there's tons of info on it being used for acne... stupid doctors.

Even Elle magazine has mentioned Spiro twice now as a treatment for acne. Sounds like you need to talk to a dermatologist. Medicine has probably advanced just a little since your doctor graduated from medical school... (I'm rolling my eyes at your doc, not at you!)

Sucks about the yeast infections. I personally have never had one, but I know that a helluva lot of women on this site have had good luck with the garlic trick, so I'd try that. There's a massive thread on here about it...

Ugh. I still have no discharge but there's a lot of grainy white... STUFF in the folds around my clit and between my labia minora and majora. Kind of looks like how toilet paper lint can get if it gets stuck there all afternoon and soaks in your natural body juices, only I'm fairly certain this isn't toilet paper lint. Not this much.

Washed the crap out of my kitty with some mild Summer's Eve soap and I'm trying the garlic trick.

^ AAAAh! Don't wash your vag with anything like Summer's Eve. Whenever you do that, you wipe out all of the good bacteria along with some of the bad. Which yeast highly encourages you to do for its own survival purposes!

Sounds like you should leave the garlic in overnight. If that doesn't work, try the OTC one...Monistat?

You should search for the "garlic in my twat" thread here on SW. Garlic kills yeast; that's why bakers never add garlic to the bread beforehand.

I wonder if it'd help if you directed your doctor to this link: http://www.acne.org/spironolactone-r...305/page1.html

Seems like Spiro's getting to be common knowledge these days..

Well yeah. Garlic has incredible antibacterial and antiviral properties. It's more potent for germ killing than most kitchen spray cleaners! It's just not as pleasing to the nose.

I wouldn't recommend taking minocyline! I don't know the specifics of it, but it can have some very severe side-effects (including fluid build-up in the base of your skull which could result in death). I was on it until I looked up the side-effects; if your acne is bad enough, try getting some laser treatments on your face.

ETA - sorry, I know this isn't what you were asking for advice about, but I cringe whenever I hear about someone ingesting this god-awful stuff! and if you get the laser treatments you won't have to take antibiotics anymore.

My acne isn't THAT bad. And I'm not dancing anymore so I don't have the money to afford that.

And yes, I've stopped the Minocycline. I'm seeing my doctor ASAP.

^ Are you on birth control? I believe Spiro has something like an 80%+ success rate when you're on bc. It's also good for mild acne cases, since that means you likely won't have to increase your dosage. I've been on the same dosage for 1.5 years with the same results..

Try *eating* as much garlic as possible as well! For example, greek yogurt with cucumber and mashed garlic is delicious. Or make some chicken soup with lots of garlic in it. I promise, garlic works wonders for yeast infections. Eating a lot of it will also help with getting your skin clear.

Actually one night of the garlic almost cured it completely. I used another last night and it's pretty much gone.

Went to the doc, she gave me a mild prescription for diflucan, and I convinced her to start me on Spiro!

Starting on 25mg, and she wants me back in a month for bloodwork to make sure my electrolyte levels and other body chemicals are where they should be before she considers upping the dosage. I can kind of understand her trepidation regarding that, since she said I'm the first she's prescribing Spiro to.

^YAAAAY! Keep us updated on how things go!

I'm a bit worried that you might not see great results since you're not on b.c., but it's still exciting.

Well, I do also have oily skin and some excess facial hair (my upper lip is a bit more fuzzy than most women, and I have a few sporadic hairs on my chin that I pluck). My hormonal acne is bad around my monthly so it's not OMG ACNE, but enough that it's a nuisance.

If I don't see anything in a month on the 25mg and my doctor says my bloodwork comes back fine in a month, she'll gladly up my dosage.

What dosage are you on, Charlie?

Your bloodwork will be fine. Just stay away from lots of potassium (like in salt substitutes). I'll be interested to see what my bloodwork looks like now, because the more Raw I go, the more bananas I eat...

I have been taking 50mg/day for 1.5 years now.

I'll tell you what, this is the cheapest I've ever paid for medication!

The diflucan and the 30 day supply of Spiro only cost me a whopping $1.39. That's cheaper than the minocycline! By a lot!

^ I know, right? Imagine what it'd cost if they actually marketed it as an "acne cure."

Mine costs $20-30 for a 3 month supply. Compared to the money I was spending on worthless creams and washes, that's nothing!

If this really does help with my oily skin problem as well, I hope I'll actually get the courage enough to use a facial moisturizer that has a mild SPF in it, too. Every moisturizer I've run into that has even the slightest bit of SPF has always been way too greasy for my skin.

Crossing my fingers! I'll let you all know how it goes!
