Default Buy a new laptap or fix? Nerds help!

I'm in a foul mood again over it running slow!
    It's 5-6 years old.
    Here is what's wrong:
    generally slow
doesn't copy files consistently ( says cyclic redundancy and I have to retry batched of music or photos before it finally works )
has weak spot where power cord doesn't stay connected string in back .
The 1 key is missing ( I have to hit my nail on the spot to make a 1 ).

I think I'm going shopping. I just need someone to tell me it's ok to buy one even though it " works ". ( I'm frugal so normally replacing a working thing isn't what ID di ). I need it for my day job and wish they would help with the cost ( but won't ).
I'm also dreading the chore of loading programs back on .

Ugh, I know exactly how you feel. Mine is only a few years old, but I've used it pretty much everyday since I've gotten it. Its sooo slow sometimes and the battery will not stay charged more than 5 min without the charger and now its got spyware on it that I can't get rid of so I have to delete everything from it and start over.

Anyway, if you use it frequently, then I agree that you should buy a new one. I think I am going to as well as soon as I can afford it. Its for your job, so you shouldn't make yourself feel bad about spending the money. And I'm sure it will make you happier and much less frustrated once you get everything that you need back on it.

Just replace it. Computers these days aren't meant to last more than a few years & chances are that most newer software that you would load onto it would almost be "too much" for the old computer to handle.

FYI - Athena just bought a new computer a few weeks ago, & got a good deal. We were at the store & she paid for it in all $1s. Gotta love her!

A 5-6 year old laptop is not worth fixing, for what it will cost to fix you can buy something that's way better than what you had. Hell an iPad is probably better than something that old.

You don't really need to spend anywhere near that much on a computer unless you are really into gaming, and then you wouldn't want a laptop anyways.

If it's just running slowly, you probably just need a fresh installation of the Operating System. Copy all of your personal files onto an external hard drive and take it in to get a fresh install.

My SO is a professional developer, and he has done this to my laptop multiple times now with great results.

Or you can just find a programmer who needs the money and will bootleg you a copy.

Computers are cheap now and far more powerful than they were 5 years ago. $800-900 should get the job done with something that is far superior to your existing laptop.

I've never been a fan of fixing an old computer, particularly when new ones are so cheap that it is easier just to buy a new one than to go through the hassle and expense.

Just my $.02 and good luck!

^Though that's not a very green perspective. Computers cost the environment quite a bit. Just sayin'.

^^^ Yes, but a computer that can't run the newer software is pretty much worthless. You can really only make laptops "hang in there" for so long. Even with a fresh install of the operating system, it sounds like it's not worth it. This information is being brought to you by someone who was a Network, Systems & Database Administrator for some major companies. I've seen my share of "not worth it" computers.

LOL - admittedly a very selfish perspective and all about the performance.

I own a small business and we have been around long enough that we are cycling through a number of computers. After 5-6 years a computer can no longer handle the newer operating systems. I blame it on Microsoft, but there it is

I try to donate them to good causes, but readily admit that as often as not they end up in the scrap heap.

Obviously I'm not arguing that everyone should hang on to their 1999 laptops forever. I was just mentioning that the "just buy a new one!" attitude has a non-obvious repercussion.

^^^ If you really want to feel like you aren't just being totally "non-green", pull the hard drive & give it to a shop that sells used computers. They'll put in a new hard drive & fix whatever might need fixing... & probably sell it to someone who can't afford a new one or just needs it for something really basic.

    I'm cheap also.

ninite.com -download many different programs to install at once
Move a less used button to the 1 spot.

As mentioned to speed up back to original condition, probably just reformat and re-install Operating Sys.

    no reason to spend $1500
$800 or less and down will get everything unless a gamer.

What do you plan to use this for? i really don't see why you need to spend more than 250-300 bucks on a laptop that you are only going to use for minor stuff like browsing the internet and emailing. My brother bought a brand new lap top last year for 280 bucks that does absolutely everything he needs it to do with no problems and should last for a long time.

This looks like a great computer. It has a strong processor and very good memory at 4G. Assuming that there are no equipment malfunctions this should be good for some time to come and should easily handle bulkier versions of Windows 7 and any software that you use.

IMHO it is better to spend a little more on something good now rather than to buy a 3-400 low end version that will be obsolete much sooner and limit you in your computing capabilities.

^ I can EMail you a very good little programme that will get rid of all that SPYWARE for you...and also a Free 'Anti-Spyware' and 'Firewall' that is excellent....and doesn't use up a chunk of disc space either.

    PM me if you're interested.

As to the 'OP'....with $1.500.00 you can get a really excellent Laptop for under $1,000.00 - if you take a little time to look.

Keep an eye out for HP deals...and also deals on Dell's.

Medion, MSI, Compaq, Samsung, Gateway and Toshiba are all within your budget - and you'll get a laptop just as powerful and capable as a desktop.

    I'm a media monster.
I'll fill it with photos, movies, music.
I think that one I picked will work.
Will it? I'm very impatient and will pay more if needed for more speed, but I really think shell cover it.

That display is kinda small.. if you like to watch movies or plan on camming with it you might want atleast a 17 inch. Or maybe I'm just spoiled =x
