Default Do you have a second/"real" job?

I've been stripping for four months, and I've also been working as a hostess at a restaurant -- it's my "cover," so that when people ask me where I work or how I support myself, I don't have to say that I'm a stripper. I'm in college, too. Now that school started up again, I've got a LOT on my plate, and I feel like I want to quit my restaurant job, but I don't know if I'm okay with stripping being my only job and income source.

Is stripping your only job? Do you work elsewhere -- if so, is it for financial reasons, personal reasons, or as a "cover" for stripping? I'm really really curious about what you girls have to say. : )

My covers for stripping: College, internship, volunteering

I don't have a job aside from stripping. I've thought about getting one, but then I realized that even one shitty night at the club vastly outdoes any money I'd make doing any other job that would probably take up more of my time and energy.

Up until just a few years ago it seemed like I always had a real job while dancing, then I decided I didn't need the "cover" for my resume anymore & gave up the real job. Usually I took office work: computer network admin, database admin, graphic designer, counselor, etc.

Yeah... I make more in five hours of stripping than I do in a week at my real job! And as a hostess I have to be on my feet all day, which gets really exhausting after a night of stripping.

    That's a great cover.

I have always done a few other things aside from stripping. Volunteering, school, writing, other sales jobs etc. In other words- I live my life, do the things I love AND I strip on top of that. Not the other way around.

If you look at the situation from an abstract viewpoint ...

    - on the negative side, if a girl 'strips' at all she is running the risk of creating a 'paper trail' to that effect (i.e. dancer's licenses, 1099's etc. ). But this risk doesn't increase regardless of whether she dances 1 night a week or 5 nights a week.

    - on the positive side, virtually no other 'job' can provide the same income potential as 'stripping'

    - like professional athletes, 'strippers' have a relatively short window of opportunity to maximize their earnings. While a person can essentially have equal straight job earnings potential at age 20 vs 30 vs 40 the same is NOT true of 'stripping'.

    - given a finite amount of time and energy, and a limited window of opportunity for maximum earnings potential, 'strippers' who sacrifice 2 or 3 or 4 nights a week in favor of working a straight job are in fact voluntarily 'walking away from' a whole lot of potential earnings which can seldom be 'replaced' later in life.

Stripping was my only income source for about 6 months. I got burnt out. I got an offer from an environmental consulting company and I took it. I still dance, but only 1 day a week. Since my only income isnt coming from stripping, I go in with a better mood and have better energy. I now make more in 1 day stripping then I ever had before just because my attitude is better and I know I have a backup. I also have medical benefits, a 401K where the company matches a percentage of what I put in, and a good "cover".

Stripping as your only income can be tough. I get to take off on days or weekends when I know it would be a hard hustle at the club. Like days before the 1st of the month. Maybe you could only work part time at your regular job, and make dancing your full time job?

Stripping is my only job, and I am no near to look to another job. I do enjoy that I can work whatever day or take a week off. But I do go to school, so if anyone asks I just tell them I am a waitress.

I don't have another job - Stripping is my real job. Mind you, I kind of wish I had a part-time 'cover' job to help out with nosy relatives, and aid in those tricky 'proof of income' questions when applying for credit cards, loans, apartments etc...

I'm just now starting to realize how much I'm making as a dancer - I don't think I'd be happy doing anything else.

I had school and an internship as well as dancing, that was more than enough without another paid job on top of that. Most people presumed that my internship was paid (it wasn't) and that worked fine for me.

Now I just found me a "real" job that pays pretty good, although still not as good as dancing. I'm planning to find a new club and continue dancing, I love it - and not just the money!

I usually had a second job, even when I was dancing fulltime. For instance when I started dancing I was in college and also doing various forms of modeling (art classes, photography, glamour, etc). Later on I started getting burnt and cut back to part time dancing (3-4 days a week) and concentrated on my "real" jobs, whether it was PR, radio or something else.

I work in the medical field and I dance too. But, my medical field job has gotten too stressful. So I'm just dancing now.

Dancing is my only job and has been my only job for the last three years. I'm not ashamed to tell strangers and people I'm close to what I do because I think it's important to be open and honest with people. I'm also a career stripper so I don't have a big ambition to seek out other forms of employment. I want to take some business classes and open my own business in the future when I retire but that's at least ten to fifteen years from now.

In my state stripping in clubs isn't the easiest or most lucrative. So I do bachelor parties, usually 1-2 a week which adds an extra $200min to my finances. Then I work as a caregiver 2-5 days a week. Since I've worked as a body piercer, I've already been an independent contractor (1099) so that paper trail is covered.

I've also used excuses like a house cleaner or a waitress who gets paid under the table (which explains the multitude of $1s in my wallet) to cover my independent contractor status.

That is a really fantastic breakdown of the issue.

OP: Some of my friends are happier when they have a "straight job" as well as dancing for income. One of my dancer friends wants to drop dancing for the most part and waitress, and just dance twice or thrice a month for an extra boost. These girls like the job a lot more when they don't depend on it for bills. I can understand that viewpoint. For them it's less about maximizing potential earnings and more about having something on the side that allows them luxuries like vacations or spa days.

I stopped having other jobs after one short attempt a couple years into dancing. I just hated working for $10-$20/hour yet having massive pain in my feet and back from standing all the time. Plus, the breaks were SO infrequent (they followed OSHA regulations, but that doesn't amount to much compared to the freedom of stripping) that I got worn out and unhappy really quickly. For me, stripping is better on its own. It gives me a lot of freedom to travel at the drop of a hat. However, different things work for different people.

When i was stripping, i was in school, so that was dealt with. But then again, 90% of the people I know, knew that i danced, so I didn't need a cover.

I was always very blunt about what I did. I also always considered dancing to be a "real" job. I was there for the money, end of story, so to me it was never anything but a job.

Sometimes i wonder if women don't make it harder on themselves by feeling like they automatically must cover up what they do. But that is another rant.

I essentially quit my "other job" because it was annoying to go in there, make about 1000$ for the company, leave without commission and then go and dance. Or not be able to dance because I would get out of work too late to go to the club. It just wasn't worth it to me to make about the same I would dancing one night as working the week and not be able to make more because the other job was getting in the way.

the boss asked me not to quit, we agreed on one shift a week that wouldn't interfere with dancing or my boyfriend's days off work (hehe) and I still get my 50% discount at a store that I can shop at and get my girls / family deals at.

I do sometimes and when it happens I just take a week off and then go back that following week. I've had a job for as long as I can remember so staying home for extended periods of time is just kind of bothersome to me.

I personally don't understand how some girls can only work like once a month. I'd be so depressed working that little haha

That is one downside of having graduated. I don't want to go back to school for a couple years, so that means I should start looking for a "regular" job. It would be awesome if it were only one or two nights a week. Frankly, if my alt club goes downhill I'll just look for a weekend job somewhere nearby, so I'll be getting a (tiny) paycheck during the weekend, and then I can work Sunday and any other day I want during the week. Working Friday and Saturday at Tea Garden should cover rent, and then dancing will pay for the other 1000 in necessities I have each month (and the rest will be savings and fun money). Hmm, I'm starting to like this idea more and more.
