    Default Raw Diet!

So I've just finished my first week of about 95% raw foods. And I really think I'm going to stick with it indefinitely.

I haven't felt deprived at all this week, the diet costs the same or even less than cooked foods, and I feel great!

Now that I have a dehydrator, I've been making raw breads, mini-pizzas, and all kinds of fun stuff! (Most raw foodists eventually drift towards more simple meals, but I'm doin' it up for now!)

I just had my first sandwich since I went gluten free. Raw onion bread with 'hummus' (SO good), green peppers, and tomato. I could've put a marinated portabella mushroom on it, or even just lettuce, but I loved the simplicity of this.

My birthday is this weekend, and I'm going to make a raw pie for my family that I think will taste amazing. Link: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/200...raw-fruit-pie/

Maybe the pie will help convince my family that I haven't gone completely off the deep end. (They're probably all picturing me on some insane deprivation diet where I can only eat lettuce and tomatoes).)

And for your daily rawspiration, here's a video made by a crazy raw foodist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jabJIdrvkR4

I don't think he's trying to be funny, but I thought it was.

Anyone else out there planning on going raw?

Congrats! I'm still not 100% raw, but try to eat raw about 3-4 times per week.

BTW, I love the videos from that guy! His videos were some of the first & best I found on Youtube.

I haven't gone completely raw, but I'm shooting to get as close as I can. The vegetable I make a point to cook is potatoes. I remember reading somewhere about how potatoes have a certain enzyme that make you feel a bit nauseous if you try to eat them raw. But I'm loving making "pizza" (not the Americanized style, but healthy). So good!

I'm still dealing with some light acne even though I cleanse my skin and apply my toner and topical acne meds meticulously. Also I suffer from some gas/bloating especially badly when I have a lot of dairy on a given day.

I'm getting so bored with what I've been eating for the past few months and although it's healthier than I've ever eaten before, I still don't feel like I'm eating as well as I could. I'd love to start incorporating more raw foods into my diet, I already include a lot of fresh fruits and veggies though so I think I'll research some other options.
    Raw cereal:

    1) Finely chop up a ripe apple. I usually core the apple and slice it into circles, and then chop it up into small squares. I like my apples cut very finely.
    2) Chop up a banana into small bits (but don't mash it!)
    3) Chop up some cashews (dry roasted, unsalted cashews work well here...not totally raw, but still very healthy).
    4) Throw this all into a bowl. I love to sprinkle some raisins on top, drizzle some agave syrup on top, and sprinkle some cinnamon on it as well.
    5) Mix this all together, and fill the bowl with almond milk (I buy mine at the store--obviously this means it's not truly raw since it's pasteurized, but it doesn't make a huge difference health-wise).
+The best thing about this recipe is that you can come up with so many variations. Use pecans. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top (surprisingly good). Hemp seeds. Shredded coconut. Etc.!

I often have smoothies for breakfast during the summer. 2 bananas + 1/2 bag organic raspberries / blueberries + almond milk in the food processor. Easy and delicious! Once my hemp seeds arrive, I'll be adding those.

For lunch, I usually have a salad. One of my favorite (and easiest) dressings = olive oil + mustard + garlic + soy sauce / nama shoyu. Shake it all together and drizzle over organic greens.

It's easy to mix salads up if you get bored, because there are so many different dressings you can make. I like to put nuts / seeds on mine. Apples work well in salads. And if you want true decadence, buy some herbed goat cheese and sprinkle that on top.

Lately, I haven't been a huge dinner person. For the last few months (winter), I was obsessed with warmed tomato soup. I'd just buy organic pasta sauce (again, not truly raw, but extremely healthy), and throw it in my food processor with some spices, organic onion broth (homemade), olive oil, and garlic. My latest obsession has been herbed goat cheese on organic, gluten-free, whole-grain crackers. Pretty damn healthy, though obviously not raw. Also, I've been obsessing over olives. Roasted garlic stuffed olives. YUM.

Snack foods: anything that can be dipped into dressing. I used to make my own raw dressings, but it was very expensive, and I never found a ranch dressing that I really loved. So I buy high-quality dressing that I eat (sparingly) with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers (especially the tiny adorable ones), etc. I also eat nuts, dates, oranges, bananas, and whatever else looks good to me in the produce section. Lots of little things that I can snack on--since I tend to be more of a snacker than a full-meal kinda girl.

These days, I'm what I would call "high raw"...which means I'm definitely not 100% raw, but whatever I eat that isn't raw is extremely healthy. I have sushi once a week (homemade). And I basically just make sure that my fridge is always full of food that I actually want to eat.

I know there are some ladies on this site that are more hardcore raw than I am. But I am all about doing what feels good. After becoming anemic and having issues with zinc deficiency (such things happen if you stop eating meat and aren't careful to eat things that replenish your mineral / metal reserves), I've started taking supplements for that. I'd rather be healthy and take supplements than go back to eating meat and living with guilt for it.

Anyway...let me know if you have any more questions! Hopefully the other raw ladies on here will share their favorite raw meals. I'm not very creative, and I'm lazy as far as food goes. So my diet is pretty damn simple.

This is awesome! Thanks for all the helpful info.

I love having some easy/interesting ideas for what to eat even though not all of it's 100% raw, the effort is still there and health-wise everything is still much better than processed foods. I'm definitely going to try out some of these things, especially the cereal idea! I get bored of eating the same cereal every morning so to be able to add some nuts, fruits, and spices will add some much needed variation!!! Everything is nice and simple too which is a huge plus because I hate the thought of having to cook elaborate recipes lol.

Mmm...just had a huge salad with olives and sunflower seeds. Olive oil-mustard-chopped garlic dressing. Fresh pepper grated on top. YUM.

    And tonight...SUSHI.

i waiver, but i'm supposed to stick to raw foods because of my health. my favorite pick-me-up before work or a long day is a no-bake cookie mix i make. a few tbsps oats, a tbsp of raw cacao powder, a couple tbsps raw chunky peanut butter, and raw honey- enough to make the mixture *mix. sometimes i skip the peanut butter and just enjoy the chocolate oats. it's the best stuff ever!!

I dunno, a Chef I worked with did this once. He said he lost a ton of weight but couldn't maintain the thing, for obvious reasons.

He said that 'breaking' it was worth it for the lost health and like the South Beach and stuff, one cheat ruins the diet or something.

Eh, to me, it just sounds like some healthy eating that everyone should be doing in the first place.
I wish I knew what I was doing...

I eat almost 100% raw. The only exception is South River chickpea miso (which I'm completely obsessed with)...aside from that, I do blanch a few vegetables because I wouldn't eat them otherwise (asparagus, green beans, broccoli & cauliflower). I rarely eat any of the aforementioned, however.

I used to do a lot of gourmet stuff, but I just don't have time anymore...

Be careful of zinc / iron deficiencies.

My main zinc deficiency symptom = I started losing my hair (gradually, but more was coming out in the shower than the norm...which is difficult to gauge for anyone with long hair), and I was also having problems with mental fatigue. This sounds ridiculous, but literally two days after I started taking zinc supplements, my hair stopped falling out.

Main iron deficiency symptom = FATIGUE. I seriously would sleep for 14 hours and still feel exhausted.

Raw is awesome, but you have to be aware of your nutrient intake!

Charlie - do you journal to keep up with your nutrients? Do you write down what you eat daily, the different amounts of vitamins/nutrients, or keep track of macros or anything? Or do you just gauge mentally how much of each you're getting?

Raw sounds like it would be a lot of work initially. Does it become more natural over time?

I've been high raw for 2 years. At first I experienced a high, then later fatigue, which I now attribute to eating WAY too many nuts and nut butters. They are heavy & harder to digest (even if the nuts are soaked). I was just eating too many.
Personally, I think it's super easy. Get a good raw book to start with like "Raw Food, Real World". I also really like Ani Phyo's books...

Honestly, I'm pretty irresponsible about keeping track of my nutrient intake. I hate taking vitamins (especially the daily ones...they're like horse pills!). But once I started experiencing serious symptoms from lack of vitamins (iron became a problem very quickly b/c I lose blood every month), I 'manned up' and added those into my diet. I'd rather take vitamins than eat the unhealthy foods required to get the same nutrients (i.e. meat).

Raw was definitely difficult at first. I mean, I grew up on the Standard American Diet: meat, gluten, soda, etc. So it's not like I was coming into this with a leg up. I went from meat & potatoes to raw over the course of a year. Started by cutting out artificial ingredients, then gluten, then meat...

I used to have mini panic moments when I'd walk into the grocery store, like "WTF do I eat?" It was kind of scary to walk into a grocery store and never leave the produce section. I went through a major sugar withdrawal period where I'd eat .5 lb of raw honey at a time just to get my fix in (I used raw honey--not the runny, cheap kind, but the kind that's solid and has never been heated--as a transition food b/c I was freaking out without sugar). I also went through an odd period where I'd drink olive oil straight.

I think my body was adjusting to life without processed foods / fats / sugars. I also had to adjust to not having a full stomach constantly. Most Americans think they're hungry the second their bodies are done digesting whatever they ate last, which simply isn't true. Americans also like to think that we need to eat lots of protein to be healthy. I did a shitload of research on food during my li'l raw journey.

I used to make complicated dishes (like raw lasagna...made of shaved zucchini and different nut pâtés...tasted amazing!), but I've gradually gravitated towards very simple foods.

And as of now, I'm more 'high raw,' like Margaux below. The non-raw foods I have in my diet now tend to be organic, gluten-free, meat free (except for raw salmon in sushi), etc. I've been raw / high-raw for about 1.5 years now, and I'll never look at food the same again. It really heightens your awareness of what you're putting into your body, how most people eat, etc.

I have to say though...the foods I've cut out that have resulted in the most significant benefits (in mental clarity mostly, along with skin quality, lack of gas, etc.) are gluten, dairy, and meat...(meat isn't just bad for your health...it's terrible for the environment, for the global food / water crisis, etc). So if you're looking to clean up your diet but don't really want to go raw, those are the three I'd target.

I haven't committed to a dehydrator, but I will if I keep this up long enough. I have more energy and feel happier and friendlier when I eat raw. And I don't feel like I'm missing out or get cravings. It's great
I'm a big fan of steak tartare too, which isn't so healthy but since I live in France it's everywhere and makes eating out so much easier.

I've been raw for years & am definately dropping years as I go! The longer you are raw the easier it is, the better you look & feel. Those who give you flak about stuff usually haven't done their homework especially where protein is concerned. I mean, look at gorillas! I don't see their raw vegan diet impeding their muscle mass and don't get me started on the raw vegan body builders...

The more immersed you become in the raw vegan lifestyle the more in tune with your body you become & mine is REALLY good at telling me what I do & don't need to eat.

There is also the small matter of lowering metabolism which is proven to be better for the body than having to process, digest & deal with the metabolic waste of too much processed stuff

    Food for thought...
