Default Can Belly Fat be genetic?

I've heard a dancer in the club talk about this before, and didn't really think anything of it. She said that a lot of where fat deposits can be genetic, including stubborn belly fat.

I have stubborn belly fat, but I also live in Kansas, so to cut out all bread and carbs from my diet is essentially the same as saying "I plan on starving myself."

My sister, on the other hand, eats absolutely TERRIBLE foods, does not work out at all, and she has a perfectly flat stomach. Her arms are a little chubby and her ass and thighs are flabby, but she has a perfectly trim abdomen.

Meanwhile, I have a great ass, and beautiful thighs and calves, a perfectly oval face, an hourglass figure, the top-set of a 6 pack, but a gut and some love handles. I eat healthy and work out regularly.

    Thoughts?

Growing up my mom has always said it was genetics, too. And I actually do believe it. My one sister and I are built like my dad, whereas my other sister is built like my mom. My dad gains in his stomach and face just like my sister and I, and my other sister gains well, nowhere, her and my mom are stick thin.
And the stubborn part does suck, it takes a lot to keep it off. My sister drinks pop all day long and eats whatever and people think she's TOO THIN sometimes.

I don't know the "scientific" answer to this but I have always been really thin and although I still am I have my mom's ugly belly so yea I do think it's genetic.

There are soooo many factors to consider when questioning why your body stores fat where it does. I have a sister who is built completely different from me too, and it pisses me off! I have always had big hips, thighs, and ass, and I am very hourglass as well. I believe a lot of this has to do with how estrogen dominant your body is, mine being very estrogen dominant. My sister is built more like a lanky 14 year old boy, tall, thin, no curves, no body fat. I feel that diet can dramatically change your body as well as supplements. I take Relora, which is proven to decrease belly fat. One of the main causes of belly fat is too much cortisol, which is a stress related hormone. Relora controls the release of cortisol. I also use a waist wrap: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?cp=u...LAID=488234882, and I do NOT drink alcohol (besides at work when I absolutely have to) I don't care what anybody says, ALL alcohol makes you gain weight, especially in your stomach. I have always only drank straight chilled vodka, and when I quit that, my waist shrunk drastically. I also would advise to avoid soy, since that raises your estrogen levels and also can make you bloated.

How often do you use the waist wrap J.D? Just during exercise or is it an all day thing? Have you noticed a difference from using it?

i definitely think fat distribution is genetic. we've got a tendency to get fat arms in my family. like, i'll gain and lose pretty evenly for the most part, but my arms are always a little out of proportion, a little thicker than the rest. i hate them. thin arms are my weight loss goal, which will basically leave the rest of me looking like i'm on death's door. lol. but really, i'll have to get very thin to have nice arms.

one of the first place i lose weight is actually my stomach. it gets flat pretty quick. but i care more about the hips/love handle area. a flat stomach doesn't matter much if the rest isn't streamlined. i'd rather have a belly, actually. a lot of guys think that's cute.
-love everyone but keep them far from your soul-

I think so - to an extent. I don't think genetics will make me fat exactly, but our genes do determine how our body fat will be distributed (along with diet, of course).

Like JD mentioned it has to do with the levels of hormones in your body too. Different ratios of estrogen/testosterone will result in larger/more pronounced secondary sex characteristics, so you body will shift weight to your boobs and hips, or to your arms and belly accordingly.

I have belly fat right now, but that's because I AM fat right now (shhhh...). Thankfully I have a pretty narrow waist regardless and large boobs to balance it all out. Minimizes that "apple" effect.

Some people can be really slim, but if they gain 5 pounds it'll go right to their stomach first. Shitty deal.

Yeah, it can be, but you can fight genetics in that respect if you work hard enough. If you lose enough body fat, it will eventually go from that area too, just more slowly and with m ore difficulty than other places.
