    Default A lower-tummy question

All my life, from as far back as I can remember, I have had a pad of fat on my lower abdomen, between my belly button and my pubic bone.

I have recently lost a heap o' weight, done hours of Pilates and ab exercises, and still nothing helps. I am starting to look sort of skeletal on top, and people are telling me not to lose any more weight, yet still this flap of flab persists on my belly.

I eat a reasonably healthy diet--lean vegetarian protein, lots of fresh veggies and fruits, limited whole grains. I stay away from fast food as much as possible. I eat plenty of fiber. Honestly, I see little difference from when I ate whatever I pleased.

It is getting harder and harder to lose any more weight, and while the ab exercises do help to suck in the underlying muscle, the juggly blob of fat still will not go away. Llike I said, this has been with me since childhood.

I am considering liposuction, but since that is not likely to happen in the near future, does anybody know any other things I can do to reduce the appearance of this mess? How can I reduce lower-belly bloating, for example? Are there any supplements that will help reduce (safely) water retention? Will detoxification help? Any other suggestions?

    All help is greatly appreciated!

Women are supposed to have extra fat in that region incase they get pregnant. Probably the only way you'll get rid of it is liposuction.

I had this problem and the only thing that helped was lipo. Just make sure to go to someone recomended so you don't have to get a redo. I've had both standard lipo and water lipo. The water-jet lipo was done under a local - but was to painful and gross. I'd recommend tubescent lipo under a general.

Try drinking ginger tea, or eating ginger ( if you can handle it ). I used to get really bloated looking and started drinking the tea, it helps about 30%. But for a full 100% it sounds like lipo.

Or body type too; some people store more fat in some places than others. Fat is fat no matter the source.

i have the same exact problem. as a kid i was very big, and so was my fat pouch. when i grew up and got taller and leaner, the fat pouch got smaller and less noticable, but it was still there. All the women in my family, even my stick thin sister have it. its heriditary. theres nothing you can do about it other than liposuction. women are supposed to have fat there as baby padding in case we get pregnant. just remember that the leaner you are, the leaner that fat pouch will be. getting skinny wont help, its gotta be muscle

I've been working on it as hard as I can. Lately I've been doing the INSANITY workout, by the same people who make the P90X workout. It's hard on the knees, but great for abs!

Is it better that I do ab-toning workouts or whole-body muscle building workouts?

That region on my body was really bad after I had my daughter and I did crunches all the time but they didn't help... the ONLY thing that kinda helped was this...

Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and arms straight beside you (like you're gunna do a sit up)
Slowly lift and tilt your pelvis upward as you exhale. As you lift your pelvis, be sure you keep your lower back on the floor so you get the most out of the movement.
Hold the movement for about 5 seconds and inhale as your relax your buttocks back down on the floor
Do about 10 to 15 reps and take a 90 second break between sets. Perform a total of 4 sets.

*Only I held for 15 secs and tried to do about 20-30 reps.... just make sure you really tighten up when you lift off the ground... if you don't feel it you aren't doing it right

    ^^what she says.

Also, try to incorporate some belly dancing to your shows; belly dancing is not only sexy, but works the lower abs really good.

I too have the ''pouch'', it sucks and mine wont go either, doesnt matter how many sit ups/core excersizes i do etc. My sis has the same thing and she is skin and bones so i think its a bit genetic. I did think about using injectable clenbuterol which will basically disintegrate it, but will also more than likely make me quite poorly and have future problems. I found mine did go down with excerizem swimming particularly helped, but ive pretty much accepted that im always gonna have a little bit of curve to my lower tummy.

    It's genetic. :-(

Lipo was invented for women like you, I'm afraid.

Do you look like the pics on your website right now, or even leaner? If you look like the pics on your site, I'd say your muscle tone looks GREAT (I looooove it when women work out... best thing you can possibly do for shaping your body!), but you look like you MIGHT be able to squeeze out another 5-10 lb fat loss (not sure what your height is), which would reduce the tummy fat even more.

But seriously, your best bet for the 'pooch' is lipo. Just suck it up, save the cash, and get done with it. ;-) Lipo was created for women like you - women who are healthy, active, and exercise regularly.... but just have one or two areas of fat that accumulates in genetically predisposed regions, that wont go away no matter what.

Disclosure: I had some mini-lipo a few years ago for a similar reason... little fat pads above my knees (WTF?!?) that were resistant to every form of exercise and diet known to man. I am soooo happy I got it done! Shoulda done it SOONER! LOL! No one in my life knows I did it, except for one friend. I would do it again in a flash, and I'd pay double! LOL! ;-) Sounds like this would be a good option for you.

    MUAH!

Ok... I just re-read your original post, and.... Yeah... it looks like it's gonna be lipo for you. :-(

But.... I also need to say.... CONGRATULATIONS on the weight loss, healthy eating, and other lifestyle changes!!!! WOW! Could not have been easy..... way to go!

Let me tell you something.... after I got rid of my one little 'problem area' (my chubby knees... lol...) every single workout after that felt soooo much more rewarding, because I was finally seeing the results, and NOT focusing on that ONE STUPID FLAW that just would not go away. I started wearing skirts way more (before, even though my thighs looked fine, I would stay away from skirts because of my chunky knees. After the mini-lipo, I was able to FINALLY wear minis.... ugh! What freedom!). Now, when I do a leg workout and eat clean for a few days, I can actually see my muscles around my knees.... makes my whole leg look leaner, and more ''chiseled'. I think that once you decide to go for the lipo, you will experience a similar 'breakthrough'.

Seriously, girl, you are already busting your ass. If working this hard is not doing anything for the pooch, go get it sucked out already. Seriously, you deserve it. Your future workouts will be soooo much more rewarding, because you'll finally be seeing a toned flat tummy, even BELOW your bellybutton.

In the meantime, try those caffeine-containing slimming creams. Do your research, and read a bunch of reviews, because a lot of that stuff is total crap, but there are some effective ones out there (usually the expensive ones... you get what you pay for, right?).

Good luck, and congratulations again on what you've already achieved!!!

    -J

PS. This is the website for the doc who did my mini lipo...he also sells creams (I used them post-surgery and beyond) that actually work. I think they cost a ton though.... cant remember. I think mine were included with my procedure. http://www.lipidoctor.com

Thumbs up Re: A lower-tummy question

Ahh Congrads on the weight loss. keep up the workouts... I lost about 40 recently (for the 100th time). Got about 20 more to go, but if I don't lift weights I am going to still be flab! Phat Phat and FAT.. I've done lipo, but it isn't gonna tone you up. Just get that annoying fat pad off. The older we get, the harder it is the more we neeeeed muscle.

I am going to start P90X in a few days. You gotta check it out. This is a before / after video on youtube. There are a TON more. hang in there!

Thanks, everybody. I now weigh 50-60 lbs less than I did on the day I got pregnant, which is 11 years ago next July. I have been hovering about 10 pounds over my goal weight for abut a year now. It has been really long and slow, but I have learned so much about food and exercise along the way.

I figured lipo would be the ultimate answer, but I really cant take on another bill right now, which is why I am looking for the stop-gap measures I have been talking about. I will definitely try the exercises and ginger tea--what have I got to lose? I have no living relatives, so I can't compare myself to other family members to see whether they may have the same problem.

For those of you doing the P90 workout--is is hard on the knees or back? I am trying to do the Insanity, but I have bad knees and I keep hurting myself.

Try doing more exercise focussing on the obliques. Tightening them up pulls your stomach flatter - you want to work all your abs, not just the upper ones with crunches and sit ups. It is likely genetic disposition but if you can "fix" it without surgery it's probably better!

CONGRADS!! I have an artificial bone inplant in my Knee/femur aka, bad bad knees... I can do it, concentrate on the weight lifting. Just keep all low impact, no jumping at all, it slows you down a little but your muscles will get stronger and even help those knees. !!

Oh Oh another video that is cheap cheap cheap and kicks ASS, uses hand weights and will strengthen you without screwing your knee up... No impact.

kathy Smith , lift weights loose weight looks like she made a few of them. Here is one, only $3 bucks on half.com

And her second one, I might get it too...

and if you have never done yoga, this one is cool... Kathy Smith - New Yoga Basics for Beginners (I don't like her other ones).

    Congrats on the weight loss!!

As well as trying to work out different muscle groups, maybe hit a session or several with a personal trainer who can walk you through specific excercises? Its cheaper than lipo! Lol

There is a whole range of things that you can do to deal with water retention and bloating..
First off - drink more water! Make sure that you are eating a moderate amount of salt (sounds counter-intuitive, I know). It might also be a good idea to check for food intolerances - if you have a wheat intolerance, for example, this could make you super bloated. Certain teas can also help, like nettle, shitake (and other mushroom teas) and mint tea. Of course, these have to be drunk on a pretty much daily basis for any effect.

One thing I will say if you decide to go the lipo route - avoid laser lipo - doesn't do a damn bit of good!!

Mushroom tea sounds gross...is it? I ma having a bit of luck with the ginger tea. it tastes good, too.

Damn the water! I hate drinking water in winter. Seems like water is the cure for everything though. *sigh*

I think ther is something to be siad for oblique exercies. at least, it lkeeps me busy and I feel like I ma doing something.

Maybe find a belly dancing class? It can give a good womanly shape to the belly. Personally I think a little fat on the tummy is attractive, as long as its not out of control.
