This is so freaking sad. I feel sorry for her family.
Many people don't realize how difficult pole dancing is and even if you have performed a move numerous times anything can happen in the hold. Many amateurs don't know how to break their fall safely.
This crap happened to me at work. I fell fast out of a transition move. I would have slammed my head into the stage had I not caught myself at the last minute with my hands and, fortunately, was strong enough to hold myself up until I could hook my legs.
Needless to say, I've never done that transition move again. Hope she recovers.

Wow, that would be so devastating! I wonder if she hit a slick spot on the pole or just lost her grip?
Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

OMG! I've been doing that move for over 10 years. Wow. This made me emotional.
I did fall on my head in January trying to pull an aisha during a photo shoot. I fell on my right temple and somehow didn't crack my head open. I was cleared in the ER and was cool to go home. And I Know I Was Very Lucky. There happened to be a nurse at the shoot and I Thank Her Every Chance I Get.
I do have an x-pole at home now, but it's on carpet with mats around it if I practice holds.
However, yesterday in class, one of the students fell and hit her head in the same place. I didn't see her fall, but once on the floor, she wasn't getting up. She was across the room from me. I went over to her and she was crying and terrified. There were 3 other students closer to her, WHO DID NOTHING! I stayed w/ her and told one of the students to get the instructor and another to find some ice in the kitchen. THEY DID NOTHING! It took forever for the prima donna student to get to the instructor. Once she did, the instructor actually said, "This is the first time this has happened in my class, I don't know what to do".The other girls just didn't care or because it has never happened to them or they are ignorant as to how serious the condition can be.
I checked with the girl this morning, she said she seems better but is going to a doctor. She should have been at the ER last night. But the instructor was more concerned that she had two more classes to teach. The instructor has been a dancer for well over 10 years.
Sorry so long. But I guess you can tell how angry, appalled and actually scared I am. I was going to learn how to do 'death drops' but I think this article and thread has totally changed my mind. They are impressive, but not really sexy and can be really dangerous.
That poor, poor woman.
(Formerly known as 'Korina')
^ Im shocked no one did anything! I remember when I was a kid my parents always taught me if you see someone hurt, help them. I hope the students were shocked to move, but not caring that is just self fish! I hope that she is ok now. You did the right thing on checking up on her.
As for the mother of the story.. poor thing.. nine months in the hospital and 18 more to go.. I hope she recovers. I do think pole class studios should have matts no matter what.

That is a real tragedy.....I feel for her and her family. It just goes to show how dangerous pole-dancing can be at times...

I made a mistake by reading the comments people made at the bottom of the article. Now I'm absolutely livid. I can't even think of a way to put in my own two cents, I'm so furious and appalled at the moment.![]()

I fell in hit my head once. I was scared to go upside down for about a month after that.

Ugh, that's so unfortunate. Poor woman.
I think pole lessons should be taught in a studio. Preferably "one on one" from a pro, so stuff like this wont happen. Not in a gym as a "work out".

^ I agree. One on one lessons should be how it's done so that safety really can be a focus. This is dangerous stuff and people just don't realize it until it's too late.
Interesting thoughts on 1:1 lessons. Although they are more personal and hands-on, they are considered higher risk, as if the student (or instructor!) falls there is only one person there to help/go get help.
I'm telling my students to take this as a lesson. We don't know the situation that caused her to fall. You're more likely to get run down by a bus: Have a healthy respect for the danger and risk of pole, but don't let it scare you out of doing something you enjoy.

This is so sad. Even though I was fairly decent on the poles, I was always terrified of something like this happening. Luckily the worst I got was a sprained ankle but still scary.

Oh god that's so unbelievably sad. No wonder they are no longer accepting comments on that article, they were fucking HORRIFYING! You mention pole dancing and suddenly all compassion goes out the window. Are you fucking kidding me? She's fucking PARALIZED ya bastards, I say kill em all. *storms out*
Mmm.... Though I can understand that one that said pole dancing should only be done by women who are in-shape.
I think women of all sizes should try beginner pole. Definitely. Especially since it gets you into shape. However, I do think you should be in decent shape before trying anything intense, that is, something for which you might have to catch yourself when you fall.
I fell off the pole plenty of times, once badly. I was upside-down in caterpiller and I took the wrong leg off to drop down. I fell, face first, onto the marble stage. Thankfully, I came out of it with only a busted lip because my arms were strong enough to break my fall against the stage. I really doubt a "beginner" would have come out of it as well as I did. It's a big reason why I'm such an advocate for pole girls to strengthen up.
And I digress by saying I'm so sorry for her for what happened. Here she was actively trying to better her body and she gets badly hurt. That's awful.
