    Default Oily Hair Remedy?

My boyfriend has really oily hair. About two hours after shampooing his hair looks like it needs to be washed again because of the oil.

As a result, he washes his hair twice a day. He only uses shampoo - conditioner exacerbates the oil problem. He uses Head And Shoulders.

He also has oily skin. I've loaned him my Clinique Level 4 cleaner, toner and moisturizer and even THAT wears off in just a few hours. I've told him he needs to see a dermatologist but he doesn't really have the time, or money to see his general physician first to get a referral (required by insurance) and then to see a specialist.

Any tips? Oily hair shampoo or home remedy suggestions? I'll take suggestions for salon lines, but I'd prefer something affordable that we can find in a drugstore. We are both college students and I'm no longer dancing.

Oily skin and hair is a sign that his whole body is toxic, so rather than just treating the symptoms, he needs to treat the cause of his problem by cleaning up his diet.

^ Yup! Also, by washing (especially with harsh stuff) so much, he's causing his body to produce even more oils - it's a vicious cycle, really.

Get him to wash his hair every other day and face only twice a day with something like spectrogel. It'll take some time, but his body will adjust.

Actually he has an extremely healthy diet for a college student. I'm betting more than anything the oil production is due to overstimulated oil glands from washing too much and with the improper product(s), along with just simple genetics.

But "healthy" may still mean he's eating something he's intolerant to. The reason I know this is because my sister was plagued with oily skin, hair and terrible acne for years (until her 30's). She only got rid of it when she got food allergy testing, and cut dairy, eggs and a few other things from her diet.

Not everything is caused by having too many toxins. Lol.

He'd have to start washing less. It'll be awkward at first but his body will adapt. Like BabyMolly said, get him to wash his hair every 2 days and his face twice daily. If hes willing to wait it out it should work to bring down the oil.

To get through the weird greasy days try a dry shampoo. TIGI has one that I like.. A popular hair care line (Pantene I believe) recently came out with a line of dry shampoos and I think they have one geared towards oily skin/hair. Just be sure he gets it on his roots, but not directly on his scalp. It's less expensive, like $7 or $8.

And for his face, maybe blotting papers would help? Neutrogena makes good ones that I used when my acne was bad. .

About 6 months ago I went from washing my hair daily to washing it about once or twice a week. My hair has adapted, it takes a long time to look oily now. Hopefully this will work.

I asked a few salon specialists in the area and they recommended Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Shampoo. My dad uses this and I know for me it makes my hair and scalp very dry, so I got my boyfriend a small bottle of it to test.

Also, THANK YOU J.D.! I hate coming into a thread where someone's mentioning a problem and the first suggestion is "Change your diet!" Bad hair? Change your diet. Problem fat? Change your diet. Car acting funny? Change your diet! I know my oily skin was due to androgen levels. Spiro changed that, not diet! (of course, Spiro is a drug for girls, not boys...)

Diet can help some, but not completely. Accutane works great for ppl who have excess oil. I know you mentioned he can't afford it now, but when he can...he should really look into it.

As for shampoos, make sure they are clear/see through. Not thick, white, & creamy. Head & Shoulders makes my hair look limp & lifeless. Toss that out, & invest in a good shampoo.

I love that TIGI one, but if you want one that's just as good, but way cheaper and unscented, try Batiste dry shampoo from sallys. I think your boyfriend will love it, I do!

Ugh. I always feel like dry shampoos just make my dark hair look dull. D:<
But yeah... that'd be my suggestion as well.

AutumnLily, you say spironolactone changed your oily skin? I have been on it almost a year now for acne and while it has drastically changed my skin for the better, I do still get very oily. How long have you been taking it?

I've only been taking it for a month and I'm on the lowest available dosage (25mg). Maybe ask your doc if they could up your dosage?

I'm actually on a pretty high dosage... I wouldn't want to up it and don't think my doc would be okay with it either. I guess I am just an oily person! It's definitely not because of toxins I eat very well and am quite active.

Not sure if this will happen to you as well but my breasts have grown from an A to a C cup since I've been taking it!

Try a PH level shampoo and nothing from a regular store, go a store that sells professional shampoos such as Sallys. and try washing every other day or 2.

I use to use this stuff all the time. It really cleans the hair and it sucks every ounce of moisture right out of it. It actually strips the hair of all its oils. Amazing! This may work for your boyfriend considering his dilemma, but I eventually went with a milder, moisturizing shampoo that clarified just as well.

    Good luck!

I second not washing as much. As far as his skin goes, how about blotting papers as a quick fix throughout the day?

I've heard that rice paper is an inexpensive alternative to those blotting sheets you can buy in drugstores (that are oddly expensive). I think they sell some at Sally Beauty?

Have him put a tablespoon of baking soda in about(maybe a little more) a quart of water; and have him rinse his hair with that. It should help a lot.
