Thumbs down sugar free candy fail

ugh so this morning against my better judgement i bought some sugar free chocolate. i was in a store where they had a bunch of chocolates, and i saw a sugar free option, was tempted and bought 4 pieces and ate them. they tasted good but then about an hour later the stomach pain from hell came.

    it still hasnt gone yet.

ive had sugar substitutes before-- some have made me bloated. but nothing this painful. i seriously feel like my insides are going to explode. and i feel shaky on top of that (maybe because i drank coffee at the same time)?

im assuming it must be one of the sugar alcohols that did this?
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I can about guarantee you it's the friggin' sugar alcohols! I can barely handle 4g of those a day, & then there are people that can handle 18g. We all react different.

Wow that sucks. I use a ton of splenda on everything but with chocolate I'd probably pick lowfat over sugarfree. I've never had a ton of sugar alcohols but would probably have a hard time too, with my stomach that's sensitive to everything. I get stomach aches just from eating cheese.

Sometimes I like the effects of sugar alcohols. It is a more fulfilling alternative to a prune.

I use splenda on everything, too, but fake sugar does get me a bit bloaty. I think it get weird insulin spikes as well. I used to drink about three diet cokes a day and since I have stopped I lost ten pounds. It is the only think that I have changed diet and exercise wise.

Try Plamil - they make dairy and sugar-free chocolate, and it's gorgeous :-)

I'm willing to bet they had splenda (sucralose). That stuff totally screws me up. It's really bad in candy because, since it's sweet, there is a higher concentration of sugar substitute than is in other products sweetened with substitutes, like protein bars or diet colas.

I totally get the poops from sugar substitutes! I learned the hard way to go for products sweetened with brown rice syrup or stevia (which also has a super low glycemic index) instead....

malitol does it to me every time. my mom gave me a box of sugar free chocolate covered strawberrries, which came with the added gift of severe diarrhea. so i googled malitol. malitol will do it to ya if you are sensitive.

so then i bought some atkins diet bars. i had the shits and terrible gas for days. it was getting embarrassing. i thought it was this mexican food restaurant i ate at, so i swore never to go back. but then i read the atkins box and sure enough, it's that freakin malitol.

    that stuff sux.

You poor things! (All of you!)

I'm fortunate enough to not really be effected much by sugar/sugar subsitutes... That sounds just horrible!

Sugar alcohols are murder on my system. I know some people who can tolerate them relatively well. But I had a sugar-free Werther's Originals "incident" I'm not eager to repeat. That shit (hee) is FAST, too.

I know you're trying to stay low-glycemic - have you tried lucuma powder? It's a little hard to find, but it's natural, low blood sugar impact, and quite good. It doesn't have as strong an aftertaste as other natural sweeteners like stevia.

That doesn't help you for prepared snacks, though I've seen some good raw chocolates sweetened with lucuma.
