Default Supplements to speed bone healing?

So, the other day I was walking down the street without a care in the world, when I stepped on one of San Francisco's many earthquake-damaged sidewalks, twisted my foot, and fell.

In typical fashion I decided to be stoic and "walk it off". Well, 5 days of walking it off and being an idiot later, I finally broke down, went to the ER, and learned I have a nasty triple fracture in my foot which will need pins and at least 3 months of recovery. Sigh.

    Stupid sidewalk.

So my long-winded question is: do any of you have ideas about what supplements/foods might speed healing of bones? I assume dancing carries a risk of sundry leg and foot injuries, so I'm hoping you have some insight.

Should I spend my days eating nothing but calcium supplements?

    Thanks, ladies

To my understanding, calcium and vitamin D work best when taken together.

    Thanks very much, guys!

Now I'll stare wistfully at the heels I just bought, which I'll wear possibly in 2011.

OMG! I totally did the same thing girl! About 3 years ago. I waited 10 days to go to the doc. By then my foot was so fucked they had to re-break my bones to set them right, and let them re-heal. Do you have one of those super fashionable boot-cast things to hobble around in? Those are totally fun (mind the sarcasm lol)!

But yeah, I hear Vit D + Calcium will help you out the most. And probably the basic common sense of healing; eating well, and resting the foot. I'd also say stay away from NSAID's (asprin, Ibuprofen, etc) because some swelling is needed for the bone to heal. I hope your foot feel better soon. I was okay after about 6 weeks, but it really did take about 3 months before I could walk/run on it again. Honestly, if I'm on my feet a lot in one night, I still feel it.

    Happy healing!

What in the world is wrong with us! Part of me knew I should go to the ER but I thought, "Nah, I'm a badass! I'll just eat Advil and suffer."

I DO have one of those awesome boots! And a shitty old ballet flat on the other foot to truly round out the hotness. Haha. I am SO attractive. You know, that combined with bruised-ass armpits from the crutches.

I didn't even think about cutting down on the NSAIDs, so thanks for that. It makes sense. I'm trying to do all the other common sense things, though a shot of something 100-proof sounds really good right now.

I'll find out next week if I need surgery. I'm not really keen on the idea of metal pins, but if it will help of course I'll do it.

Thanks for the support! It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks walking around on an injury is a good idea. Heee.

Man that's a long recuperation. We'll commiserate as we knit bone.

Eh...I function ok. I work, and take care of myself and my place alright. I'm not averse to taking a painkiller when I need to.
I strap on an Orthofix bone stimulator every night. It sends out an electromagnetic pulse to speed healing. We'll see how it goes.

I found that focusing on my health, cleared a lot of bullshit out of my head. My injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise...actually, an overwhelmingly positive experience. I became aware of all that I had going for me that was good. It would be nice if that happened for you too.

That's a great attitude. I'm trying to look at it that way, actually. Forced convalescence can lead to some good things. Physically it's a chance to make sure that my diet is clean and on target, and I can work out my upper body and end up with badass guns .

I had worked something like 32 days in a row when it happened, and though I can work from home it has forced me to chill the fuck out for a few days and just let myself be. Lots of naps, lots of reading, and a healthy dose of SW.

i suffered a bad break at the club... I personally opted for no surgery (couldnt really afford it anyways) But check your options. Surgery can lead to more trouble down the road plus very high medical bills. I broke both bones in my lower leg and was stuck in a full length cast for over 3 months. I was able to go back to work and worked the door and cigar counter while i was out of commission. Plan on working hard to get the muscle back if your non weight bearing. One thing to make sure of is dont smoke... smoking and bone healing dont go together. you can google it. i drank alot of milk, took multivitamins, snacked on cheese and anyhting to get my calcium intake up (it wasnt much b4 i got hurt).... SOrry to hear about getting hurt and wish you the best of luck. feel free to keep in touch i know what your going through. ps... one plus side is your good leg and upper body with be getting a heck of a workout!!!

Coconut oil is supposed to help with calcium absorption as well. I know JD has made some great posts about the benefits of E.V.C.O. on here. I swear by the stuff, I take a tablespoon every day.
