Default 20hr Drive - CO to WI

I'm getting ready to head back to WI. It's about a 20 hour drive... which is REALLY long to me. I'm planning to go I-25 to I-76 to I-80 to I-35. Basically I will go through Denver, east through Nebraska (Lincoln & Omaha), through Des Moines, IA, head through St. Paul then go NE towards Rhinelander.

I love being in the car with music... but 20hrs is a bit much. If anyone is game for meeting up for a quick lunch/dinner/coffee on the way let me know! :-)

I'm going to be leaving on Monday, staying overnight somewhere (haven't figured that out) & trying to get into the Rhinelander, WI area by Tuesday afternoon.
    Don't you ever sleep?

Oh god - that's a long friggin drive. I'm not along the way - I'm up north in Canada - otherwise I would totally be game for meeting you and breaking up the monotony of the cruse....

I drove from Maryland to South Florida once - a straight shot, and the last part was through a tropical storm. It sucks to be on the road that long. I find audio-books help keep the time passing. Be safe and stay alert. I'm glad you're being sensible and breaking up the drive. Hopefully someone from here will be up for a meeting! XO!

I drove from Dallas back to San Diego in one shot(similar distance to your trip I think). But I was on those Black Jack pills. I do NOT recommend them. I have no point lol.

I've driven Denver to San Fran multiple times & this is about the same distance. I do plan to stop somewhere half way though because age has finally caught up to me & I like to take naps these days. LOL

Audio books? Probably not. I just need really good music.

Gia does NiteFlirt during long trips like this but knowing my luck I'd get stuck on the phone with someone boring who would only serve to make the situation worse.

If anyone wants to meet up though I'm game!

I'm terrible with the directions out here, are you going to pass through Lake Geneva/Delavan area??
If so, and if you need a place to stay, message me.

I know I'm about 4-5 hours from Eagle River...just not sure where Rhinelander is.

I suggest you get it serviced before you go.

Lube, oil, filter, and check the belts. Tires rotated? Spare tire has air? Can of fix a flat? Insurance card current? $100.00 rolled up and taped in a out of the way spot? All the lights work? Tire tread good? Do the Lincoln penny test. Adjustable wrench, Phillips head screwdriver, flat head screw driver, duct tape? Roll of toilet paer? baby wipes? Compass? I get lost in those flatlander States myself.

Maps for the route? Bottled water? no cooking snacks.

Here's a tip I learned from my Dad. Buy those already made canned soups. If you punch a small hole in the top to let out steam, then cover the top with tin foil, you can rest you can of soup on the engine, it will heat up as you drive. Hot dogs or kielbasa will cook wrapped in tin foil. Its a long way between stops in those corn belt States.

Have fun I miss travel myself.

Be thankful you can stay awake that long. Cannot do the 16 hr drive from Dayton to the Tampa Bay area (to our vaca home) without spending the night in Georgia!

that's rough. i love to drive and can easily manage 12hrs, stopping only to pee and get gas, but it's not easy. 20 hours, that's one hell of a drive.

i like to drive as close to non-stop as possible. the ordeal of finding a hotel, eh. and you've got to unpack and pack, and wake up in time for checkout. and hotel beds. and the floors, ew. and you never can be sure if your car will get broken into, so you have to unpack everything (the risk is only really high around the holidays, but i worry about the hassle so i just unpack it all). plus, hotels are pretty expensive for what you get, though it depends a lot on the area. and it's so much time, check in, check out, unpack, change, relax, sleep, wake up, get going. ugh.

but mostly i prefer to drive at night. traffic is usually a lot better, especially if you're sticking to interstates. and you can't rent hotel rooms for the day to sleep. so i just pull over at rest stops or parking lots that seem safe, and i'll take a nap in my car. once fall hits, i won't even have to leave the a/c on. but i'm the kind of person who'll pull off into a parking lot for a nap if it's raining so hard you can't really see anything. i spend as much quality time with my car as possible.

the best advice i can give you is that if you're gonna take a break to eat or get coffee or something, don't just take a quick one. give yourself a couple hours minimum. take some time to walk around and bend your legs and flex your sore glutes. do something that requires looking at things close to you (reading, knitting, whatever you're into). rest your eyes. do eye exercises (side to side, up and down, diagonal, circles, etc). before you start driving, do a quick workout (pushups, lunges, dips, whatever works for you). get the blood pumping and your energy back up.

don't take a lot of breaks, but savor the ones you do take. getting off the highway for a lot of breaks is stressful to the car and fucks up your gas mileage, and it eats up a lot of time you could be driving or relaxing. a long, satisfying break can hold you over for a pretty long time. eat as early in the break as possible so your body can digest it before you get on the road again. plus, eating makes your body satisfied and relaxed. think of ancient people...they'd walk around til they found enough food. your body will put up with a lot more discomfort when it's hungry than it will after you've eaten. eating and long-distance driving don't go together well. something light like fruit or veggies or juice is fine, but save fats and protein for the long breaks.

it can be good to search in advance for places you'd like to stop. certain restaurants, a starbucks, tourist crap. whatever. just a few years, this would've taken a lot of effort, but now there's google maps. choosing stops in advance can also make it a lot easier to focus and keep your energy up. you break it down into shorter trips instead of the one long one.

if you want to stop for the night at a hotel, book it in advance. that's your stopping point for the evening. no shorter, no further. again, you can research prices and quality in advance, which makes this option way better than just stopping where ever.

if you feel yourself zoning out, put on music you HATE and switch the temperature to one that's uncomfortable for you (i'd turn off the a/c, but you might like it warm, in which case you should blast the a/c). bring some smelly stuff. some people say peppermint, but i think it's too relaxing. citrus can be good. if axe bodyspray disgusts you, don't be afraid to buy some of that before you leave. a perfume that really revs you up or a cologne your ex wore during the best sex of your life are also great options. scent is probably the most ancient and unchanged sense in the human body, and you can manipulate it in all sorts of directions. don't drink a lot of coffee. but do find a really nice smelling coffee you can keep in the car while you drive.

splash some water on your face (a spray bottle can be a good idea too). even wash your face if you've got the supplies and a clean bathroom available. change your clothes (everything). if you've got access to a place you can be for a while without being rude, spend a couple minutes naked before getting dressed again.

i know some of this probably sounds crazy, but driving is seriously my favorite thing ever. especially long trips. and when you love something, you find ways to make it work better for you.

Good luck with the drive! Have your favourite music. As the posters mentioned.. make sure your car is in check and same with your safety!

The temp. thing works amazing for me. As shesells^mentioned whenever you feel getting sleepy/down turn the a/c all the way to cold I do till im freezing so Im alert and by keeping the windows down. (Im in Canada.. not sure how the weather is there, but here I would be already needing a sweather). Keep your fav snacks/candies around whenever your bored to keep you busy and sort of full persay when driving. GL!

This thread has gotten WAY off topic. I've done plenty of long distance driving.... I just wanted to know if anyone along the route I'm going would want to get together for a bite to eat or coffee.

i just did abq to san fran in one go. quite tiring. and my tire exploded which added more time.

if you want to find ppl on the way to chill with, you know that i would be happy to vouch/write you a reference on CS . and im sure E from albuquerque would too... .
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.
