    Default skin cancer

So, I am pretty much the poster child for skin cancer: light blonde hair, blue eyes, pale skin, some freckles.

I went to the dermatologist on Monday because I had a suspicious looking freckle pop up on my chest recently...and got a call today that it is a basal cell carcinoma. It's hopefully not a big deal, I just have to go back on Monday to have the area around it cut (fun). It does upset me a little though because I JUST turned 28...so in the back of my mind, I'm like, "great...what happens ten years from now?!"

Consider this your friendly reminder to wear sunscreen I am vigilant about it, but apparently not enough!

Skin cancer has a high rate of survival if cut early so any questionable mark go and check it out. My aunt just died at 45 because she never checked the moles growing on her until it was too late.

So I wanted to update this - I went and had the carcinoma removed. I had no idea that they would need to do a 2 inch incision for a spot that you could barely see. It runs vertical, right between my boobs. It's healing up nicely though.

HOWEVER... when I had that surgery, I asked the doctor to double check a small dark freckle on the top of my right breast. I had pointed it out to her the week before, and she said it was "nothing." Upon second inspection, she said she would biopsy it "just to be safe."

So, I'm driving to Gainesville for class yesterday (where school and my derm are both located), and the dermatologist's office calls with my biopsy results. The margin around the incision was clear, so they got all of the basal cell... but the other spot was pre-melanoma. greeeeeat.

I ditched class, went straight to the office, and had another surgery. Now I have a second lovely incision across the top of my boob. I'm starting to feel a little upset. I mean, really - I shouldn't be vain about this. That spot could have developed into melanoma and killed me. But damn, it still sucks. I've always had pretty breasts and smooth, creamy skin. Now I feel like a fucking road map.

Okay, that's an exaggeration. But still.

    I'm done whining now

    Wishing you the best!

I'd suggest you pick up some mederma at the pharmacy. Hopefully you won't have any scarring.

I've also heard great things about bio-oil, which is less expensive than mederma and has more helpful-looking ingredients. Walgreens should carry it.

Thanks guys - I think I will try bio oil. I get the first round of sutures out Monday, so I will start that on the first incision then.
