does anyone study fashion or costume or similar in college?
i havent studied fashion formally and a mate once said it was mostly trend forecasting and season work and very very little designing.
i want to make made to order costumes for performers such as ballet/exotic/ballroom dancers, singers and stage performers and wonder which course will be more beneficial.

if anyone has ideas for work placement or internship or networking that i might find useful please share! im just getting some free time and i really need to get into school next year so i dont have to study afterwards ever again and do something i like.

Can you already make clothes/costumes and just looking to get an accreditation or wanting to learn? A good dressmaking course would probably be best. There's a girl that comes around a few of the Melbourne clubs with a rack of outfits she's made to sell which I think is a great idea, if you did that AND offered to make clothes to order I'm sure you'd do well.

Sorry if that wasn't the kind of advice you were looking for, to be honest I don't know much about fashion and design but I know A LOT about buying stripper outfits

yeah some girls at my club are doing that too.
i think stripper and professional showgirl outfits would be a fun side project but its not enough consistent money which will allow me the financial comfort of dancing.
i did textiles major work for my hsc so i know a bit more than basic sewing so i want to learn both the craft and design, market etc. think viktor & rolf and alexander mcqueen for inspiration.
but yeah. its uni application time so im throwing around ideas.

I went to college for fashion merch. I went to an art school in Chicago but I'm not sure what is in your area I do know that most fashion geared degrees aren't what they seem on paper. I had taken a few design coarses with the fashion design majors and they were doing just that, making garments, understanding fabrics, etc. So I think if you do go that route you have to be careful about what part of fashion your trying to get into. Also what Amareth said was good too. If you want to design on a larger scale then it's a good idea to get into a school but I, too have seen many strippers start their own company (making clothes) with only a few sewing classes behind their belt. Good luck and be sure to let everyone know when your line of stripper wear comes out!!!

I'm studying Fashion. It really depends on the school. @ the art school i went to in georgia, it was VERY construction based, lots of trend forecasting, and lots of very practical application. @ the art institute in Dallas (which i do not attend, but have friends there), it is lots of merchandising, design, color theory, fashion history, with little emphasis on construction.

I went to a specialized high school and studied Costuming, and it is very different. yes, there is a big emphasis on actual construction of weird and different outfits, but half of your degree is historical research and applying that to the individual players in whatever show you are designing.

now, what you're wanting to do may be something you need to plow through on your own. I run a small buisness making costumes, and i had to start the buiisness by myself, no one i knew or could find wanted to hire me without 4893028590 years of experience. so you may never need a certificate (though it certainly doesn't hurt), but you will need the practical experience.

my own degree that i'm finishing is a double major double minor in Fashion design and accounting, my minors are web design and buisness management. I hope to be able to be independent when i'm finished, able to write buisness plans, do my own taxes, build my own website, etc.

look up the individual schools and programs, because every school varies in their teachings. some are very theory, and some are very construction.

thanks, thats exactly the type of answer i was looking for [but thnx everyone else for your insights]. thats really my main issue is not doing three years of trend forecasting and like pivotal stuff. even though knowledge is never wasted so it cant do more harm but id rather concentrate of constuction, business management, patternmaking, context, ideas etc. maybe i should start my own school! XD

thats true, i often browse around in general fashion graduate jobs and most of them would either want qualification or experience. then i saw the entry level salary was $100k and my vagina twitched.
