    Default Healthiest Hair Dye/Tint Brand?

Sooooo, I think I'm finally going to take the plunge and tint my hair...just to see if I like it. Nothing drastic. I'm looking to add color, NOT to bleach it.

I was looking at Clairol Naturals--it seems like it'd be the healthiest option. But I am totally ignorant/naive about these things.

What have you found to be the best/least damaging brand?

Henna hair dyes tints/dyes are probably the best for virgin hair.

I've used the Clairol Natural Instincts dyes before, and I do like that brand. I believe it was semi-perm, and it washed out after a couple months...which is good if you don't want to make a major commitment. Link to their website (you can get a coupon! yay!) http://www.clairol.ca/en-ca/naturali...FSVL5wodnW8mMQ

    I also really liked Natural Match by L'oreal, but I believe it's been discontinued. It was very conditioning, and also a Semi-permanent hair color. Penelope Cruz was in the commercials...I'm sad they don't make it anymore. )-;

Henna? I don't believe so. But I'm going to go check.

Update: You're right. 'Real' Henna will give your hair a red pigment. I've known brunettes who claim to use Henna on their hair (and their hair looks great), but I'm guessing it wasn't high quality, pure henna. Now I'm wondering what they were using....

Also, something I didn't think about, Henna is permanent...you can't really lighten it, you just gotta keep using Henna or grow it out. I guess boxed dyes are the way to go.

^ This is what I used recently to intensify my natural hair color. Ion Color Brilliance demi-permanent hair color. I liked it a lot, although you have to use a developer with it so it might not be the most gentle stuff to use... It didn't damage my hair though. Ion also makes a semi-permanent version but it didn't get as many good reviews on makeupalley as that one.

Henna also dries the holy hell out of your hair. So if you have at all dry hair to begin with, I'd stay away. I know there are conflicting reports on this, but in my personal experience I was left with a head full of scratchy straw.

I like both Naturtint and EcoColors. They probably don't last quite as long as chemically based colors, but they're surprisingly good.

I really like Aveda products. I don't think they sell them retail though, you would have to go to an Aveda salon but they are made using all or almost all natural ingredients.

I like henna and it can be used on dry hair with a few messures. For dry hair consider using something like Lushes henna which is mixed with coco butter and makes a conditioning paste while the dye sets.http://www.lushusa.com/shop/products...nna-hair-dyes/

There are more than just red henna. There is also indigo henna which isn't true henna but is dark brown and can be used alone or mixed with red henna for a variety of shades.

I bought a box of Clairol Natural Instincts, just b/c it was convenient. I will definitely keep your other suggestions in mind if this one doesn't work out! Thank you so much everyone!

So I tinted my hair! (I usually call it hair dye, but I guess this is an incorrect term)

My hair still feels very healthy, and the dye didn't maniacally darken my hair. I'd probably prefer a little bit more dimension, but the hair dye doesn't claim to be multidimensional.

    I used this: http://www.clairol.com/cem/index-B.jsp#/product/299

It is definitely what I was looking for for my first forray into hair coloring. I'll probably try a different color in the future, but it was a conservative enough first move to make me happy.

Thank you all for your input!!

Yay! I'm glad you liked out it turned out. And yes, I assume the proper term would be hair tinting, I still call it dye though. haha.

Oh, that's a nice color. Did it come out shiny like the picture?

Welllllll, hair is never actually shiny until you shine light on it. But yes, I suppose it is!

This product helps nourish my hair / make it shine: http://www.amazon.com/One-Only-Argan...7871220&sr=8-8 (Super cheap at Sally Beauty, lasts forever--just rub a bit on your hands and smooth it onto your ends after you shower). I also use Dove's new Intensive Repair shampoo/conditioner, which has done wonders for the health of my hair!

Random info there ^^, but in a thread about hair, I thought it might be useful.
