    Default Just started dancing

    Hello Ladies,

Thank you for having me on the forums. I'm pretty new to dancing and i also started dancing with a friend of mine.

Our knees are completely and totally fucked up. Do any of you ladies have tips on how to preserve the health of your knees ?

At our club we do both pole and floor work, but the floor work appears to be killing us both.
Especially my friend, she bruises easily and she has the most massive bruises on her knees and legs right now.
I'm black so you can barely tell.

does anyone have any tips ?

Up your Iron and Potassium intake. Get a tube of Arnica. Until your skin toughens up, you're going to have this issue.

I'll second the recommendation of arnica - it's great for bruises!

Until they're gone, you can always wear thigh highs or long socks to cover them up. I often wear thigh high socks to work because it makes floorwork easier on my knees. And take it easy on moves that have you directly on your knees, or alter them so you're not always on them. The biggest thing I can think of is crawling, so when you crawl, try not to be right on your knees.

Arnica gel, warm baths with epsom salts, and rub those bruises out with a boar-bristble brush or cold spoon.

Thigh high stockings are a great way to cover up bruised legs. Leg warmers are great too, but only some girls can pull them off.

You can always try laying a blanket on stage to do floor work - a lot of girls at my club do that. Or you could stay off the floor like I do.

My friend Lana has been using Sally Hanson's Salon Airbrush Legs to cover up her bruises.
I'm pretty basic at the pole. I know how to get up and do a simple one leg spiral on it. Nothing to fancy.
I also found I'm a good mimic. For the most part, I can mimic some over the other girls pole techniques, but nothing too crazy.

JayATee- any supplements in particular you could suggest. The more specific the better.

Thanks for the tips about the arnica and the legs socks. Lana purchased a pair of leg warmers but they did'nt end up look as good as they should.

I find myself stretching out everymorning. I really would like to take a basic pole class too. Alot of the music they play in my club is pretty undanceable, but i still would like to find a way to make my movements more slow and graceful.

you don't have to do that aggressive floorwork that you see other girls doing where they're on their knees the entire time. move slow and caress your body instead of popping your butt like crazy. make eye contact with the customer and be sensual. save your knees!! lol you can still make money without hurting yourself

No really. Basic over the counter supplements. You can eat bananas for the potassium. I do like nature made vitamins. If you have a health food store near you, they can probably point out which are better.

I can totally remember this happening to me and every other girl who has ever danced! I really found that the only way to "cure" this is to keep dancing on them. When I first started I would have horrible bruises all over my legs from the stage. I would rest for two days and go back to work. Eventually, and actually not that long, my knees got used to it and I hardly ever get a bruise on my knees now. I would suggest using a thick body butter when your at home to keep your skin soft. Good luck girlie

Take it from the old lady who is having her 11 year anniversary of stripping this week:

    DON'T DO FLOORWORK! LOL!

No seriously, if you work at the type of club where you can just walk back and forth onstage and get away with it...do it! I stopped doing floorwork in 2003 when I had my "third breast" on my knee: a fluid sac that I had to get drained.

Totallly agree. I bruise very easily and have bad knees if I go on stage, I walk back and fourth and swing my hips around, that's it. Is not worth it for a few bucks to damage your body.

Well... my best advice to you is never to do floor work, like brit said. Might not be what you want to hear, but hey, that comes from a woman with friggin bursitis in her knees at 31 (though it started when I was 29)... all because of floor work. When I initially went to the doctor for it he said they typically only see it in women that young who are in professions like "house keeping/cleaning". He was trying to skirt around the "on your knees" issue. I told him I was a dancer and he said he has seen a lot of dancers with knee issues, but didn't want to assume. lol

When I stopped doing floor work it DID get better, but it took months and months and they will never be "the same".

instead of doing floorwork do "legwork" where you lie on your back and do different things with your legs spreading and turning your legs in different ways. it's hard to explain but practice in a mirror and you'll find out quickly what looks good and what looks weird.

What?? You had you knee "drained"...???!

If this is what happens when you do too much floorwork, I'm in trouble. I'm with the gals who say they're not that experienced on the pole yet. Nonetheless to the OP, I do get bruises but found my body start to get used to them once I started taking more vitamins. I also wear stockings a lot. Taking a day or two between a set of working days to rest helps too.
