I was on it for 2 years and stopped taking it about 2 years ago when I stopped being in a long-term relationship, just started taking it again because they wouldn't let me go on roaccutane unless I did. Changes I noticed going off it:

    - Very irregular periods for over a year, after going off it there was about an 8 week gap before my next period.
    - Sex drive went up
    - Bad period pains, worse than before I started taking it
    - Not sure if my boobs got smaller when I stopped taking but I know they've definitely grown both times I've started it
    - Had acne before taking the pill and it didn't do squat to clear it up (yes, it was one that was meant to) so it didn't get worse when I stopped

Just used condoms when I went off it, though considered getting a non-hormonal iud inserted and probably will at some stage as I am VERY afraid of falling pregnant.

Ok, it's official... I want. I think I'll call for an appt now.

The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I was looking into paraguard until I read about this on their website. It's def possible.. Scary!! That's the main reason I haven't gotten one, the thought of that happening freaks me out. And the insertion is supposed to be painful if you haven't had any kids.

I've been on the pill for a couple years, I hate it. It makes me pretty moody sometimes. But it keeps my skin clear and periods are pretty much nonexistent so I keep taking it. I've been thinking about going off it too.. I know I'd lose weight but I'd be paranoid relying on only condoms when I had sex. A baby would be the death of me!

I am somewhat scared of pregnancy - I use condoms, but don't find myself having sex very often right now (bf is in the military and gone all the time). I am currently looking into sterilization... I'd love to get that done as I know kids aren't for me. I'm a little concerned about finding a doc to do it though (I just turned 28 and have no children).
This is one of the reasons I never took the pill, along with the fact that my doctor then said I was a bad choice for it because back then I suffered from terrible headaches. Good luck finding a doctor that will perform that surgery because a few years ago I checked into tubal ligation and my doctor said she didn't recommend it for me. She didn't recommend it because I was childless and might change my mind (my main reasons were financial and responsibility). If I don't end up with the guy I hope, I'll probably reconsider it again, though at my age seems stupid to have it done for maybe 10 more years of fertility.

I'm going to stop taking them at the end of my cycle.

It freaked me out...in my women's health class my professor was talking about how 'periods' while on the pill aren't actual periods...it's actually withdrawal bleeding. Made me realize that my body is on a drug. I dunno. We'll see how it goes...

Exactly. That's why I stopped a few years ago....I got creeped out with the idea of being on synthetic hormones constantly.

However, I can't give up the awesomeness of not having a period that comes with taking the pill continuously. And as contradictory as it sounds, your point is exactly why it doesn't bother me to do it. Stopping the pill every few weeks for a period is completely false....it's not a real period at all, so why even do it?

I still don't like the idea of taking hormones every day, but it's a trade off that I've come to accept for now.

if you don't have to quit and are eventually gonna go back on it I wouldn't do it. I also got some serious monster acne and for the 6 months I was off it, no period.

I went off the pill 2 years ago after taking it for 3 years and I've never looked back.

    After I finished, I..

1)Didn't get my period for 6 months which freaked me out and really made me understand how messed up my body was. My period is still not perfectly regular, but it's not painful/uncomfortable and it has never stopped me from working.

2)Noticed how much my sex drive went up. I never enjoyed sex and always thought it was meant to be an annoying "let's get it out the way" thing. Don't really see the point of taking the pill to protect me from something I don't really want to do. Right now I LOVE sex and I'm happy with condoms.

3)Got rid of most of my cellulite. I've always been eating healthy and been in shape, but going off the pill was the only thing that really made a difference. My weight was never affected by the pill.

4)Have had more issues with breakouts on my face, but that's dependant of how dedicated I am to my face cleansing routine. I've found aspirin mask helps really well (and it's dirt cheap, too!)

Overall, I'm happy I'm not eating synthetic hormones anymore. It becomes a habit and will be weird and somewhat daunting to give up, but you know, you can always go back. I suggest you definetly give it a try and see how your body responds.

I had to go off it one time because I was in the hospital for a few weeks with heavy antibiotics and steroids, along with other stuff, so my birth control was useless for months while the drugs were in my system.
As for side affects, I felt quite sick, I had cramps out of nowhere all the time for about a month and a half (when my period finally came). I did get acne, but that's because I use my BC as acne medication instead of properly taking care of my face. If you just take very good care of your face, you'll be fine.
The worst thing was that my boobs went down a half a size

As for bc methods then, I used the pull out method. It works well if your guy is already used to sometimes pulling out when you were on BC. As for pregnancy, just make sure all the pre-cum is off before you do it, and have a morning after pill at your house in case of emergencies.

i've been off for a few months, after taking it on and off for about 4 years. my boobs didn't change (always had little ones) and my periods didn't change. i had noticeably worse cramps (though not awful) and the acne i had as a teenager came back, but it's really not bad at all. i keep it under control with morning/night scrubs.

my sex drive is nonexistent. like i don't even care to masturbate. before, on bc, i still didn't care much for it, but i at least made an attempt. off it, i don't give a fuck, and don't really care to hide it either. *shrug*

I can't thank you all enough for your responses.

I'm going to do everything I can to stave off breakouts. I think I'm going to slightly increase my dosage of Spiro just to balance out the sudden lack of synthetic estrogen. I'm going to stay the fuck away from sugar (which can cause insulin spikes, leading to skin issues). I'm going to use aspirin masks, and just pray every fucking night that my skin doesn't completely freak out. Oh yeah, and I'm going to exercise lots! That seems to make a big difference in clearing my skin up.

I used to pick at my acne pretty badly, but going on Spiro + BC helped me stop. So I'm super afraid I'll start picking again once I begin breaking out...

The risk is so small as to be negligible. There is a very very very very minor chance of a puncture, but this won't happen if you go to someone who has inserted them before. They're SUPER safe as long as you go to a good doctor. I went to the UCSF women's clinic and they do it all damn day long. They also are huge proponents of Mirena and other IUCs.

It almost never happens, and again (doh I should have muti-quoted, sorry) you're dandy if you go to a gynecologist who has inserted them before.

I haven't ever had kids and it wasn't any more painful than a normal pelvic exam. One pinch and it was over. Cramps for about 2 days, but no worse than normal period. After that I have, no shit, not had cramps at all. And I'm on my second Mirena, so that makes 6 years of cramplessness.

You'll be fine if you disinfect it using anti-bacterial wipes. Once you've wiped it, you won't want to have wasted the good you've done by picking at your acne. I used to be a huge picker too, but was able to stop after a couple of monster infections and discovering the wipes. I do lapse occasionally, but mostly can restrain myself knowing that the disinfectant will make my acne disappear within a few hours (in most cases).

Nothing wrong with using an asprin mask as well if your acne gets particularly bad.

^ Yes, I actually will probably be using at-home chemical peels as well. (Lower strength--they don't actually make your face peel). Glycolic and salicylic work wonders.

    What wipes do you use?

I guess I'm skeptical b/c I'll be getting hormonal acne...not acne caused by bacteria and whatnot. It doesn't seem like wipes would be able to clear something up that originates from hormonal issues. But I'd definitely be willing to give them a try!

I'm on day two of being off of b.c. I'm sure it'll take a week or two for my body to start freaking out...

Well I've been off of it for about three weeks now. Things I've noticed so far:

    -Slightly more oily hair/face
-A tiny bit more acne, but certainly nothing problematic (I'm worried this will get much worse)
    -No periods or anything yet
-Perhaps a slight decrease in weight, but nothing significant
-Perhaps an increase in sex (masturbation) drive?

Is anyone else on SW going off of bc? If so, feel free to chime in!!

I went off the pill when i was about 17 and I got pregnant 2 years later. I wasn't using condoms when i went off the pill and I didnt get pregnant for 2 years. Now after having children I am horrified of getting pregnant because well, I just dont want anymore!! So I use condoms with my husband and we've been doing that for about 2 years and I havent gotten pregnant. But we do half and half, the first half no condom and then he puts it on when he feels he should...probably not the smartest but it's worked thus far. Anyhow, I went off the pill because the hormones are horrible for you! IMO. And I didnt have any negative reaction when I quit the pill. NO ACNE. But I did lose weight!! Also it is helpful to keep track of your period and dont have sex right before or right after. I'm not an expert on this science but if you look it up there are only a few days a month when you can even get pregnant and it's either right before or right after your period. Anyway that's all I've got to say about that.

Just wanted to correct this info before it causes any unwanted pregnancies.

It is theoretically possible to get pregnant at any time during your cycle, it all depends on when you ovulate. And you have your info backwards....it's safest to have sex right before, during, or after your period. The average women ovulates approximately 14 days after the beginning of her period, and this is the time when you are most likely to get pregnant.

    http://www.babycenter.ca/preconcepti...ing/ovulation/

I really recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility to anyone who really wants to understand their bodies.
