Default Can I keep my day job?

I'm rather certain I know the answer to this, but you never know...I might be wrong.

Could I get fired if people found out I was stripping? I work in public education in Oregon.

I got interested in it via taking pole dancing classes. Found out I'm not too bad and absolutely love performing. I could certainly use the extra cash...

I did search the forums, but didn't come up with much...

    I'd appreciate anyone's input!

^^^ Yes, you could. I work in Portland and I know a couple girls who worked in public schools and were fired on the mere suspicion of being dancers. If you work with kids, you'll likely be fired if they find out.

Many companies, especially where you work with children, have a moral code of conduct clause in the employment contract. If you have that you could 100% be fired if your employer found out you were dancing. Otherwise they may just not like it & find a reason to fire you.

^^^ My understanding was that with or without any clause in a contract you can be fired for being a dancer. Since sex workers aren't a protected group it's perfectly legal to discriminate against us when it comes to employment or housing.

^^^ Ask PornLaw about that. It could be state to state but I don't believe that things like housing can be discriminated if the person has the appropriate paperwork showing proof of income.

I wouldn't risk your career for dancing, unless you plan on making dancing your career.

When I was teaching, I did not dance. Not even when I student taught.

However, the day I quit teaching I went down to the club and got my dancing job back.

thanks to all of you who responded...just thought I'd ask...you never know!

I will just go about enjoying dancing and maybe one day things will change. In the meanwhile I'm still hanging around here for sure. I've found some good tips on shopping &
music and just in general, am really interested. I don't know what's wrong with our society in the U.S. It's so prude. Everything has a place & purpose & level of enjoyment that shouldn't be devalued (IMHO)!

Since you work in public education, you're at a high risk of being fired.

Risk = (probability of people finding out)x(magnitude)

Probability of being discovered: You interact with a LOT of people, on a regular basis. Faculty staff, children's parents, etc. A lot of people from the area and surrounding areas.

Magnitude: I'm guessing you work with children. And I can't think of any anti-discrimination law based on any other jobs you might hold. This results in a high possibility of the discovery leading to your termination.

I suppose that if you did your best to disguise yourself, and denied any accusations, how can they prove that you do dance? I don't think they can take pictures of you on-stage or ask management for your name.

However, since word-of-mouth evades factual review, and since they probably wouldn't tell you exactly why you were being fired, mere sight may be deadly.

It's a precarious situation. If you must, I'd work in another town where you're sure no one will recognize you.
