    Default marathon

has anyone on here ran one?

At this point i can run like 8 miles without too much trouble. i am cut out for endurance and i used to run cross country. i wasnt planning on running a marathon but my old running buddy in NOLA wants me to train with him.

The main reason why i dont run competitively anymore is because i have chronic shin splints.

Im going to the running store on monday to get some good shoes. Im gonna need them.

and if i am not good to run 26 miles, well they have a half marathon. I think i could run a half marathon tomorrow if i needed to and popped an advil.

Also this means back to the drawing board for my diet habits. urgh.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I was training for the Melbourne Marathon last year (and got to a point where I was able to run 50K - marathon is 42.2K, as you probably know), but I didn't run on the day because I got attacked and stabbed while out training two weeks before the event.

Sucks. Take a lesson and carry pepper spray when you run, especially at night.

Anyway, good shoes are the most important thing, particularly for your knees. i ran on grass a lot to avoid impact when I was doing my long-distance training, as well. The experts say to build up slowly to avoid injury, but I must say I didn't. That said, I've been running for a few years and now build cardio fitness super-fast. Half marathon should be pretty easy for you if you're a natural endurance runner. I built up to 21K in maybe two or three months, but I seemed to plateau a bit at 25K before I gained more fitness.

Also, you'll never manage your long runs if you don't eat a high carb diet. I tried cutting the carbs at one point during training and after a few days conked out at the 3K mark. Not advisable. You can do low carb if all you do is resistance, but when it comes to endurance cardio, it's grains for the all-important glycogen. They don't call it a runner's diet for nothing.

Right now I'm just running for fitness and fun, usually not much more than 10K.

^Flickad, I am sorry that happened to you. I always think about how I need to buy some pepper spray... today is the day.

Athena, it is great that you have someone to train with! I am what is known as a "running dork." Running is my life. I consider myself a solid 10k to half marathon competitor. I train hard for those races, on a team, with a coach, etc. I love to compete, and since i never though marathon would be a good distance for me because of past injuries (knee/calf) I have never trained for one.

This year I have decided to train for the Miami Marathon January 30th! My problem with the Marathon is that I feel a lot of pressure to have a really fast time for a race I have never done before. So, I picked and easy course! But, I hear the NOLA is also forgiving.

Even if you are not "racing" my advice is to get 50-60 miles in per week and have one long run per week. Don't increase over 10 percent a week. Even though you might not be racing, I would still advise speed work once per week. That will prepare you for the "oops, I went out to fast" or for getting caught up in the addreniline.

I agree on eating carbs (I eat a lot of quinoa). Also, Omega 3's help with joint pain. Lots of healthy fats! I put half an avocado in my whey protein smoothie everyday. I eat almond butter and coconut oil or butter in my oatmeal. I also eat wild salmon. I also keep hard boiled eggs in the fridge, baked sweet potatoes, and a delicious salad. If I am eating Salmon I wouldn't have and egg that day, etc.

Be sure to eat something within 20 minute after you have a hard run, even if it is just a piece of fruit.

    Keep us posted!
