    Default Strep

Ah damn it. I think it's what this sore throat is. I've got the symptoms. Supposedly it will go away with or without antibiotics , but it remains contagious longer if you don't take the anti's. Gah. I would just wait it out, but I feel too bad about being contagious longer that I don't know if I will. And .... my hair and pedicure was supposed to be done today ! ;(
I don't wan't to get them sick. Boo!

Crap .... I wanted to get diagnosed and start the meds today but I seem to get the run around everywhere I call ( I'm paying out of pocket, they can't even seem to give me a straight answer on how much it costs for testing and meds if the result is positive ). I'm trying to do the ethical thing and get on the anti's soon to not spread it but no one seems to want to book me for an appt.

My medical assistant friend said we can go to her clinic after hours and she will test me tomorrow with the rapid test.

i have oversized tonsils and am very prone to strep/tonsillitis (same bacteria).

i nip it in the bud by taking a lot of coconut oil or coconut butter. has lotsa lauric acid which is the chemical in breastmilk that keeps babies healthy.

i have gone from gettng it 5+ times a yr and thinking i needed to get my tonsils out because the Drs told me so to now only needing antibiotics once in the past two yrs.

i take a lot of spoonfuls of coconut oil as soon as i feel it coming on. if you are trying to lose weight it will unfortunatley halt you diet for a couple of days, but if you dont want to be on antibiotics its pretty effective.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I rescheduled hair. I don't want to get the girl sick. Damn it. I swear I have it, but my medical friend doesn't even really think it's unethical to not take the meds, she just said " don't worry about it, it's really everywhere ".
At least she can do the rapid test tomorrow and then we will know .......

I haven't been eating much because it hurts, so I don't think it would affect diet much.

Do you just buy the coconut milk in the grocery store ? Or do I look for coconut oil by the vitamins ?
I think I want the milk to make a smoothie with it but it might not be concentrated enough.

I don't know about coconut oil, but don't be too fast on taking out the tonsils.

I have the same problem you mention above [in fact I am on the Zithro pack right now for strep throat]. The tonsils keep the infection localized and out of your chest.

Mine are huge and look like swiss cheese, but they are staying.

BTW, warm water and salt draws the infection out and helps shrink the swollen tissue/tonsils. So pickle those suckers.

carmen: i use coconut oil (or coconut butter- the artisana brand you can get at whole foods), not coconut milk. make sure it is virgin, unrefined, and look at bottle to make sure it hasnt been heated. i have used nutiva and artisana. there are other brands too, but be careful because some arent so good and heat alters the structure.

i think coconut milk also has lauric acid but it is not as concentrated. also, most coconut milk that i see on the market has been processed quite a bit.

re GR: yea im not getting them out. i used to get it like 5x a yr, but since i discovered that coconut oil seems to get rid of the infection for me i have only had an infection that required antibiotics and could not be c ured by my usual regimen of coconut oil once in the past 2 yrs. i dont plan on getting them out. yea salt water also helps keep it clean. i used to do that only, but for me my infections were always bad enough that salt water alone never fixed it.

I told my wife the exact same thing only several hours ago.

I don't know which is bothering me more. My feeling incredibly "blech" and/or shitty, or this growing urge to fornicate.

^ Yeah, my guy doesn't want to fool around till we get better ,but I was like " fuck it , we are sick, why be miserably horny + sick ?" . Oh well. We are both feeling a little better today . I think tomorrow has good prospects.

I did not get tested though .......... then of course my friend tells me about their friend that had heart problem from untreated strep.
I just figured I would fight it off myself . I thought extra problems were an extreme rarity ................

wow... I couldnt imagine not being able to walk in to a doctor, have every test under the sun for free and pay about $10 for a course of antibiotics and be all better in a few days. I should not take my Canadian and Aussie healthcare for granted the way I do.

As for the dilemma, you definitely need antibiotics otherwise it will keep coming back. Strep is caused by bacteria and bacteria cells rapidly divide. Im talking at a ridiculous speed. Much faster than your immune system can deal with them. I am also prone to strep and you do not want to let this fester. It will keep coming back and it is highly contagious. Also I wouldnt worry about heart conditions or anything but youll definitely be at risk of it moving further down the respiratory tract and leading to pneumonia or bronchitis.

I find Amoxilcillin works best for me. If you cant go to the doctor, I know your not supposed to do this, but if you have any friends who have left over penicillin, cephalexin, or amoxicillin or can possibly steal some?? naughty I know, but before I was a permanent resident in Australia my friend who was a nurse used to do it for me. If it was a viral infection and not bacterial, then the worst that will happen is you might get a yeast infection from the antibiotics and slightly raise your resistance, but I personally would go with the meds, you'll feel better much faster.

Well in my case my wife isn't sick so I don't want to give it to her.

Strep, if left untreated and had repeatedly, can lead to rheumatic heart ailment.

The local doc in the box has the rapid tester so it was five minutes to identify it as strep, get the Zithromax and out the door. Already feeling better. Hope you are too.

    wishing well...

I don't know anything about the Aussie system but the problem with the way things work in Canada is this: Its great if you have something like strep. You are in, get what you need, and out. However, if you have something really serious, between the shortage of viable specialists to see you and having to get everything cleared for payment before you can get treated, you could wind up dead before you get taken care of.

In fact, in Canada, increasingly people with $$$ purchase US health insurance if they can, or make arrangements to pay flat out or over time if they can't, and come across the border for treatment for things like heart disease, cancer, etc, rather than face the rigors of the Canadian public health system.

^huh? Everything cleared for payment? Shortage of specialists? huh? I lived in town of 350,00 and we had 3 massive. Im talking huge hospitals. Everyone on moms side of the family has gotten cancer for years. My dad had a serious heart condition and my mom has had several health issues. No one has ever had to wait for care. I think maybe this is bs your media tells you. I lived in Ontario and our healthcare is amazing.

A personal story to explain... so my uncle gets an a car accident because he has a seizure. Ambulance takes him to the local hospital. They admit him immediately and do tests. They find he has a tumor in his brain. He is airlifted to a cancer ward that day in Toronto. He has more tests and brain surgery to remove the tumor a few days later. Over the next 2 months he receives radiation and at the time a new therapy which is experimental - radio surgery. Do you know how much medication, tests, surgery, etc? Im sorry but I dont think that was poor care. The cost to him... $300 for the part of ambulance ride. Im sure that you can find stories of the opposite but I have certainly never experienced or heard of anything bad from any of my family or friends.

In Ontario, for payment, you just show them your health card. Not too complicated. There's no payment discussion.
Specialists can take some time to get in to see them, but why is that so unusual? You book an appointment, and go...like seeing any busy professional. If it's an emergency, you'll get moved up in priority.

Rich people can go anywhere in the world to get better/quicker medical care. This is no big revelation. Money can buy priveleges, it was always thus. Rich people in the U.S. leave the country for medical care too. They even come to *gasp* Canada.

Americans have been fed a lot of misinformation about our "socialist" healthcare up here.

It is only my reading and what media coverage there is on the subject as I have no first hand experience with the Canadian health care system.

My reading of several studies, some of which are quoted in this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari..._United_States

represent what I was driving at in this paragraph I C&P'ed here:

Quote Originally Posted by Wikipeda Article:
One complaint about both the U.S. and Canadian health care systems is waiting times, whether for a specialist, major elective surgery, such as hip replacement, or specialized treatments, such as radiation for breast cancer; wait times in each country are affected by various factors. In the United States, access to health care is primarily determined by whether a person has access to funding to pay for treatment and by the availability of services in the area and by willingness of the provider to deliver service at the price set by the insurer. In Canada the wait time is set according the availability of services in the area and by the relative need of the person needing treatment. [emphasis added]
The people I refereed to above when I talked about folks crossing over into the US to get treatment are the ones having difficulty with this "relative need" business.

If my doctor says the quality of my life might improve with a hip replacement and I can pay for it either in cash or with insurance I get a hip replacement.

While the Canadian system has a lot going for it the problem some people like myself see in it is the part where someone other than myself and my doctor are going to decide whether or not I can have access to treatment I deem necessary. This business of having a government agency establishing and enforcing a "relative need" criteria is not acceptable.

If you could just pay your way around the system that would solve that problem, but from what I have read [and heard from a few Canadian friends of mine as well] is that is a fairly difficult thing to do. It doesn't matter if you can afford to pay directly for medical services. Everything is geared around the single payer system as it stands and it's only through that system you are going to get treatment.

For better or worse in the U.S. $$$ rules. So if I want something and I can afford it I get it. No "relative need" is required to be established other than I and my doctor think it will be good for me to do it. Beyond that the only other issue is whether I can pay the check when it is presented.

So it was those Canadians who feel they need certain procedures [for some reason joint replacements seem to be a biggie which is why I used it as an example above] to make their lives better and are having problems getting access in Canada and can afford to pay directly, or via US insurance, who come to the US and have the procedures done here.

i used to get strep like Athen does, five+ times a year, but then in 04 I got em removed when I turned 14. I've not had strep. at all. in SIX YEARS.

    i'd look at a Tonsilectomy...it might help.

Glad you went. Youll feel better in no time. Dont forget antibiotics make the birth control pill ineffective so use condoms if you are on the pill and alcohol also decreases the effect of antibiotics.

Welcome to the wonderful world of fucked-up American health care!

Carmen, I'm glad you were able to see a doctor! Strep is one of things things that is SO horrendous but starts to fade the second you get antibiotics. Feel better!
