    Default fuck election day

fuck elections. i dont believe in voting because (duh) i dont believe in the system. I dont usually use SW for anarchist rants although i have mentioned my viewpoints in passing before, but today im going to do so.

I am so sick of hearing people telling me that blah blah my fault because i didnt vote blah blah and at least blah blah lesser of two evils blah blah.

to sum up how i feel about voting: anyone who thinks they are excersising some sort of power by running to the polls and complacently choosing the lesser of two evils is delusional IMO. and self righteous for assuming you are better than those who chose not to vote.

seriously, i think the one thing the overwhelming majority will agree on in regards to election is that it is choosing between the lesser of two evils. am i the only one who finds it really fucked up that this is the general consensus and people STILL offer credibility and money to something so bogus that we are just choosing the less evil of two shmucks?

This that i have done today that are more useful than voting:
-worked out- when our governments bring world war and accidentally create zombies as a war weapon, ill have buff arms to protect all your asses during the zombie apocalypse.
-ate food- yayy i fueled my body.
-spent money locally- well if we are stuck in capitalism, might as well support the places that i like
    - made money- again, stuck in capitalism. i think that money has a much stronger correlation to power in this society than voting for a shmuck.
-posted this bullshit on SW- hey i think my voice holds much more influence here than it does in an election.

so for those who also chose not to vote today, what did you do that was more worthwhile than voting?
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Maybe this is a silly question... but wouldn't you still want to do what you can to have the "lesser of two evils" making major decisions that effect you?

    If my choices were take a few minutes out of my day to try and help "less evil" win over "evil" or "let a bunch of people I think are delusional choose for me".... >>;

If I don't want to vote I at least go through the process and spoil my ballot. This years' election (I'm in Toronto) required me to leave the city I was working with my friend in, take a 3 hour bus ride back to Toronto, vote, stay over and then 3 hours back to the other city.

I don't always believe in the system but think that it's my duty as a citizen who is able to vote to do it. So many people are denied the power to vote and live in a democratic society that I would feel really idiotic to decide to not use that right.

Athena, I understand what you're saying...to a point. But what you're doing, practically, is like holding your breath to make your parents mad. All it does is cause your face to turn blue.

There is no perfect system of government...the US has about the best one in the world right now though...I'd rather participate in an imperfect system than let others do it for (and to) me.

If you feel that strongly, you could also do other things, like...

1-Campaign for a candidate you do like
2-Join causes that your believe in that petition your reps
    3-Form your own cause groups
    4-Run for office yourself

voting for evil, even if it is the lesser of two evils, is still evil. the amount that my voice counts in an election is essentially negligible unless i live in a small area and am voting on local issues (just moved to NOLA like 4 days ago, not registered here, dont know the local issues well enough. if i was registered and informed i would consider voting on local issues, but ONLY on local issues).

im against the system period. i dont want anyone in power. if i vote for who i think will ruin my life less and my voice is barely statistically significant, is it even true that me voting for the 'lesser of two evils' is a greater representation of my power as an american than boycotting the election completely?

either way, its a bunch of people who are delusional running the show. id rather invest time in other sorts of activities to try to make a difference, i used to be active in more of these type of things but since moving out of cleveland i really havent. plan on getting re- active this winter.

i dont at all believe in the system, so i certainly dont think its my duty to support it. voting for either evil is still supporting the system.

ok but voting and saying you are making a difference is kind of like when your parents pull one of those tricks on you and give you a choice like 'here dear, ill give you some power today, you can choose to do the dishes first or take out the trash first.' you get some sort of choice , or so you think, and therefore feel better but the result is you are still under their control and just feel more peaceful about it.

funny that you mention that ...

although unfortunately, i looked into it and marrying someone in the EU doesnt automatically grant you citezenship,. still hard to get. so it really depends what country you are interested in.

I voted. I care a lot about politics because I hate the way this country is going, what with those moronic Tea Party people shoving propaganda down the throats of the ignorant, uneducated masses. I plan on voting in every election until I finally move out of this fucking country, just so I can be a part of the process.

That's true Athena, it doesn't immediately grant you citizenship. But as far as I know, it is still your best bet for getting EU citizenship.

I always said that i would marry someone from the EU. I didn't, but I did marry someone with citizenship in a country that has national healthcare, so at least I have some recourse if I'm in dire need and my American health insurance fucks me over.

I wish we had a parliament in the US. That would make voting a little more rewarding. The two party system we have is moronic, and makes it too easy for corporate interests to control virtually all viable candidates. I voted for Obama, and he has been such a huge dissapointment. Republican are assholes who only care about the wealthiest elite, and democrats are pussies.

I always vote but hate voting for the lesser of two evils. I wasn't going to but had to vote this time because one of the choices scared me. This guy who actually believes women should be paid less was running for a major office so I held my nose and voted for his opponent who loves to spend money (but is not a chauvinist pig). I voted Dem, Rep, third party and other things. also had to vote for a referendum because it's important to my dad and if it passes he will get a salary increase.

I agree that Democrats are pussies, and they need to get their shit together and take a stand.

But you know what? Starting January 1 of 2011, I once again get complete health, vision, and dental coverage from my Mom's insurance through her work. It used to be I could only get it through the age of 22 if I was in school full-time. Now, thanks to Obama's health care reform, I get total coverage again, and my taxes have been lower these past two years than they ever were when Bush was in office. So it really does make a difference, and this stuff really does effect people's lives.

I know I won't convince because, in a small degree, I agree with you.

That said, what is the alternative? Not participating doesn't help either. In fact, the more people like you that DON'T vote, the more the extremists that DO vote can take over. Germany was taken over by Nazis partially because moderates didn't think their voice mattered.

With all of that said, let's say I fully agree with you and decide the system is too fucked for me to vote. What do you and I do? Just...do nothing?

I ask that honestly...no tricks there...

Agree with all of this. Obama has let me down. I voted for him but am disappointed. The Republican we have running for governor here is scary even for a Republican. He tried to pass a bill allowing employers to pay people less based on gender (ie women) and sexual preferences (gay in other words). He also hates animals. I dislike the Democratic governor but he's not as bad.

The one guy running in my state is a major homophobe (talking Fred Phelps homophobe) and I just hope he doesn't get in. For some unexplained reason gay people are the new people to hate. I think that's stupid and don't get it. I had to vote to keep this sexist, racist homophobe out of power. The election is still too close to call (ugh).

There are issues that could affect you directly, based on who gets in power. You might wake up one day and find out you no longer have the right to get an abortion, or even have access to contraception, if a certain party gains enough power. Some of the more backward, ignorant states are passing laws that makes it legal for a pharmacist to refuse to provide you with contraception, if it goes against his religious beliefs.

    http://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14380

In some states, legislators are introducing bills that would explicitly grant pharmacists the right to refuse to dispense drugs related to contraception on moral grounds. Other state legislators are introducing legislation that would require pharmacies to fill any legal prescription for birth control, much like Governor Blagojevich's emergency rule in Illinois, which requires pharmacies to provide the morning after pill. Four States (Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Dakota) have passed laws allowing a pharmacist to refuse to dispense emergency contraception drugs. Illinois passed an emergency rule that requires a pharmacist to dispense FDA approved contraception. Colorado, Florida, Maine and Tennesee have broad refusal clauses that do not specifically mention pharmacists.

Your "not voting" is a form of protest in and of itself. I respect that.

My voting is the same thing.

I only have issue with people who don't vote out of apathy or laziness.

I think the energy would be best spent trying to find someone with citizenship in a better country to marry
Actually you don't need to resort to marriage to become a legal resident ( and eventual citizen ) of a different country ! The classic term for doing this is 'voting with your feet'.

Based on no change in the US Senate majority, this is indeed likely to happen. However, there are other effects on people's lives ... among them your mother and every other employee of her company seeing smaller take-home paychecks due to increased health insurance co-pays as well as fewer / no future pay increases in order to allow that company to cover the now significantly higher employee health insurance premium cost required to provide you ( and others ) with dependent health insurance. Even with ObamaCare there is no such thing as a 'free lunch', thus voting to receive something for 'free' also involves requiring someone else ( or your future self ! ) to pay the actual cost of that 'free' benefit.

Reflecting back on the above, when the number of state residents voting in favor of increased 'free' benefits for themselves begins to exceed the number of state voters being required to pay more to cover the costs of those 'free' benefits ( and often benefits that those actually paying aren't eligible to receive themselves ), a situation often develops of some number of the payers deciding to 'vote with their feet' as well. Granted that this usually involves taxpayers and businesses moving to different states more often than to different countries. Also granted that as some taxpayers and businesses do move out, it merely increases the 'burden' falling on those taxpayers and businesses that remain.

But as yesterday's election results in my own ( former ) home state of New York clearly show, despite a period of economic downturn, it's now impossible for the remaining taxpayers and business owners to out-vote the 'free' benefit receivers. This absolutely means that benefit payouts will increase, that state and local taxes will increase, that yet more New York taxpayers and businesses will leave the state, and that I can't 'afford' to go 'home'.
