Stencils and fondant. Fondant is very easy to shape, so you can roll it and cut out pieces to make what you want, then stick it onto the cake or cupcake.

How does Fondant taste? I've seen it used on T.V. and it does not look all that appealing?
It depends. I've had some fondant that is just horrendous, like this hard crunchy candy shell. I've also had fondant that seemed a little softer and had flavor. Fondant is great for wedding cakes cause it gives them that glossy, smooth finish. If you want to try fondant out, I honestly suggest buying petit fours. Here's a link:

They tend to do a good job. Some of them are with a chocolate coating and some are just plain fondant, so you have to look.

I google and check out food blogs. I also browse tastespotting when I'm looking for something... There's LOADS of instructions on making awesome cupcakes online, and firemaiden is right, fondant is how you make that on your pics. Taste is bleh, as far as I'm concerned. I know how to make it, as well, and it all tastes like sugary paste to me, but it looks real nice. You can always flavor it if you don't like the original sugary taste.
I'm artsy and know how to draw, so I don't really use stencils, but they can be a great aid.![]()

I guess I just perfer icing... Though my decorating skills are pretty weak compared to others.

Have you seen Cake Boss? (The reality show about a bakery). They have a lot of cool demos and you can see how they work with the fondant.
Wilton offers some classes too:

^I've seen the show, though I like the one where they have 4 teams creating a cake of a certain theme? I think the guy from Cake Boss has been on it...
The fondant always looked like a sheet of shiny silly putty to me. Now I kinda want to try it just so I'll know.

Haha! Have fun. Check out http://www.craftster.org/ too (another one of my favorite interwebz haunts).
I want to say it's this one. I think there's some other cake shows, so I'm not sure.

^Don't know if its that one, but that's the basic premise.
Fondant can either be pure sugar, or taste vaguely plasticky.
On many wedding cakes, it's recommended you peal the fondant off before eating, as it would ruin the tase of the cake. That's why bakers use regular icing before placing the fondant on top.

Icing's on also to make the fondant stick. If you try to put it on sponge cake, it won't stay there.

Fondant is easier to sculpt and lends itself to those intricate designs. But I think seeing beautiful decorations done in icing is 100 times more impressive.
Angels and sunshine. What does buttercream taste like? It's REALLY delicious. It's also about the fattiest thing known to man, comprised as it is of butter and more butter.

I've been trying to find a substitute fondant recipe for the raw foodies. I don't know how well it would hold together though since I've never played with sub-fondant yet. But here's one I found if anyone wants to experiment. (can't find a raw)

I wonder if blue agave would work instead of the corn syrup. Maybe even blackstrap molasses? Stevia instead of sugar? As long as the gelatin and glycerin is there to hold it together? Idk....
