    Default strict diets

i think over the summer i was starting to develop an eating disorder.

i have to be careful about what i eat due to my PCOS, but lately i am no longer doing strict diets. i am just doing moderation and trying to lay low on the sugar and refined carbs.

i think i nipped the problem in the bud.

idk im starting to think more and more that strict diets are really bad. anything that gets you obsessed with food is not a good thing. in general, i believe life is best when you focus on life then when hungry realize you are hungry and eat. it seems like these crazy diets, even if enacted properly are very good for you, get you obsessing about food which can manifest pretty easily into an ED.

am i the only one who thinks this? just some food for thought.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I think it depends on the person.
For some people... it's actually easier to have a strict diet and have everything planned out.

For me personally... if I don't follow at least a moderately strict diet... I pack on the pounds FAST. My body likes to sit at about 125 if I leave it to it's own devices.
SO if I don't watch what I eat pretty carefully... it jumps up to that in no time regardless of exercise.

If I don't want to be chubby... I have to be on a strict diet.

Two years ago I went through a calorie counting phase. For months I literally tracked every single thing I ate and drank with an online tracker. It worked, I lost weight and was in amazing shape, but it was such a pain in the ass.

I'm with you Athena, I don't like to obsess over food and have to plan out every meal. The good thing about my cal counting phase was that it got me over my sugar cravings, so now I just eat pretty much what I want in moderation.

I think food is something to be enjoyed (albeit in moderation). I don't think it's necessary to count every carb and calorie you put into your body in order to be healthy. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and to me, food is one of the most enjoyable things you can participate in on a regular basis. I've never counted carbs. I don't really eat candy, mainly cause I'm not particularly fond of it. And I try not to eat too much sugar. I exercise. I'm not overweight. So I never really think about it.

I agree it depends on the person. I just try to eat clean all the time but I do like to enjoy life. Thank god I'm not a big sweets person or I would be as big as a house & I workout so that also helps. The only time I'm really stric is when I'm heading to the beach or before I go on vacation but while there I throw down..lol
I have dieted very stric when I was competing & hated it.

This is how I feel about it. I follow what most people would call a strict diet but it simplifies my life. Grocery shopping is easy and then I prepare my meals ahead of time. So, when I'm hungry, all I have to do is grab a container out of the fridge and heat it up. I do worry about carbs and calories and all that, but only once a week when I'm cooking. The rest of the time I just eat the food I prepared without worrying about it because it evens out over the course of the week.

I do have two cheat meals a week though. I save them for restaurants so I can go out with friends and eat whatever I want.

This is actually pretty much the same thing I do.
For me it's a matter of... I HATE having to decide what to eat. If I have to think about it... nothing ever sounds good or I want something that isn't in the house.

But if I have a regular set of meals that I eat... I know what I'm going to eat... I know what I need to buy at the store... I know about how much it will cost (+ or - up to $100 based on what sort of mood the boyfriend is in. >_<).
For me... a strict diet just means I have one less to worry about in life.

I save the weekends for my crap-eating. The SO drags me around to mexican/fast food allllll weekend.

for me, i have to maintain a strict diet and can't ever eat fast food because most of it's filled with gluten. and i don't get the runs like a lot of gluten free people i've met, i get the worst migraine and am typically throwing up...so yeah, it's a lot of incentive for me to eat healthy unless i want to feel like shit most of the time. i have planned meals and it seriously makes life so much easier for me.

and i'm the same way about deciding what to eat. most of the time it's something that i don't already have and would have to go out and pick up. and i'm also really picky...so eating out with me is the biggest pain in the ass for whoever is with me.

but at the same time, there was a period that i was so obsessed with making sure there was absolutely no gluten in what i ate (particularly when i first went gf) because i was scared i would end up feeling sick. so i wouldn't eat very often and lost a lot weight-to the point of looking too skinny. so yeah, i think strict diets can lead to unhealthy eating habits.

The strictness of your diet will be proportional to your metabolic function and biochemistry, and to the results you would like to achieve.
Some people can eat garbage all day and be in relatively good shape, other people need to count every calorie and keep strict macronutrient control all day long just to maintain; but guaranteed either group will have to lock down their diets to achieve specific goals in their physical composition.

I have to be super strict or I chub up like a whale. I just found out I have parathyroid disease though and apparently once that is treated, the problem should thankfully go away and I'll more than likely be back to my super skinny self. Yayy!! Having to watch everything I eat for the last 3 years has suuuucked!

True, but thinness/looking 'in shape' doesn't necessarily indicate health.

I didn't say anything about 'looking' in shape. Some people can literally eat garbage all day long, and have all their bloodwork and hormonal profiles tested in completely healthy ranges, have great looking skin, perfect digestive function etc., and be have good physical composition to boot! (makes me so jealous!)

Certain individuals (and I have a close friend who is like this) have crazy dietary tolerances, but even they need to lock down in order to zero in on specific physical goals (ie. training for hypertrophy).

i haven't found a good gf bread that i like yet. udi's gluten free stuff is pretty good...they have a lot of different things, only tried the muffins and bagels (both are good). i have a certain pasta that i eat too that's good. but honestly, the texture of gf bread is not good...it's half-way decent if you toast it though, the texture isn't as grainy that way.
