Thumbs down this is the 2nd time i've sprained my neck doing "the flip"... advice plz!!

so i don't know what other people call this where they work, but this is the 2nd time i've sprained my neck doing the flip if you do contact lap dances... put ur head between their legs, wrap your arms around their legs, then flip your legs up over their shoulders (it looks pretty cool and tends to make people cheer or go "oooh aaaah"). then you can flip back down and land on your feet.

well anyways, i do this move a lot (prolly for every other lap dance, and i'll do probably at least 20 dances a night) and i sprained my neck earlier this year in july and i just sprained it again on saturday. it has been sooo sore and i can just barely move it around today but it is still very painful.

    so my questions are:

    1. am i doing this move wrong? is there a better way to do it where there is less pressure on ur neck?

    2. do you think i have a sprained neck or i pinched a nerve? my boss says he thinks i might have pinched a nerve.

    3. so this is the 2nd time this has happened since i started dancing in june... should i just give this move up?

thank you for your input, it means a lot...

also, if you know any ways to help it heal faster that would be AMAZING... soo hard to play with my new baby kitty when i can't move my neck

Ummmm, stop doing it? Lol, just kidding. But, you shouldn't do it if it hurts!

I have done this move for over a decade and have NEVER sprained or strained anything. So, what I am guessing is that you are doing it wrong. First of all, there shouldn't be any pressure or use of your neck when flipping up. Your shoulders should rest on their thighs and your neck gently placed between the legs at the crotch. Most of the "flipping up" is done w/ ur abs and arms. They will also keep your balance. You shouldn't be using your neck at all.

Hope that helps! But, really- dont do the move if it hurts!

    +1

Nakita's right, it's about the ab muscles. You probably are doing it too fast to compensate for your ab muscles & giving yourself a bit of whiplash. You might want to do exercises that build up your abs more, & practice by doing slow headstands at home.

Right now I would venture to guess you are kicking up your legs really fast so you get into the headstand position. When you slow down you will be able to bend at the knees as you go up, & be using more of the core muscles. Once you are most of the way up you can straighten your legs back up.

This video is for yoga, but it's a great example of leg positioning so you slow down & engage the core muscles.

You're supposed to roll yourself up not kick. Sprains are not painful and should go away eventually with some Tylenol.

You probably tweaked a vertebrae in your neck or back or pinched a nerve.

Better go get it checked out.

thanks for the advice, everyone! i won't flip from now until my breast augmentation on the 17th, then work on my strength & proper form for the flip after i am completely healed.

In my neck of the woods that's called "The Flying Peach," but it's illegal (supposed to keep one foot on the floor here) and it's difficult so I don't see it much and do it next to never myself. But when it is done here it's not with arms wrapped around the sitter's legs- instead, try locking your forearm to upper arm at 90 degrees and brace that with your hands gripping his thigh pretty close to his knee. And then like Hacks said, it's a slow controlled roll up, not a quick flip. You can also ask the sitter to "help" you by holding your hips in position, which A) does actually help, but more importantly it B) makes it less tempting for the sitter to grab elsewhere while you're in a vulnerable position.
