I'm assuming this is professional color you used since you mentioned the level, base color and the red/gold corrector you used. What developer number did you use with the color? It also sounds like you purchased this from Sally's, which is where I work at...which brand was this? I ask this so I can have a better understanding of what you used on your hair. You can use your cool based toner on your roots, and that will help some...but if it's still at the orange stage, a toner won't help you get past the next level, just helps eliminate minor yellow/brassiness. When you lift your hair, it has to go through the color wheel; red to orange, orange to yellow, and yellow to white. A lot of times, color, even with a high peroxide (developer), isn't enough to get you past the different stages and will leave you stuck in the warm tones. If you started with two different levels of colors in your hair (roots being darker), you will most likely end up with two different colors...the lighter part obviously processing a lot quicker since it was closer to the lighter stage. The can also happen if your hair is more porous in different sections of your hair. The only way to even this out if the toner doesn't get rid of enough yellow (which, btw, tell me what toner you have so I can tell you what to mix it with and how much), you have to either put another color on JUST the root area with a cool base and more red/gold corrector and using a high peroxide and just let it lift and catch up to the rest of your hair. The high peroxide (30 or 40) might be enough to get you past the yellow stage and to deposit the color that matches. If not, you might want to put a little on-scalp bleach on the yellow parts with something gentle like a 10 developer...that will get you past the yellow for sure.
Hah. That picture on the bottom is pretty similar to the color I used to dye my hair. I LOVE fakey orange-blonde blondes... like asians tend to get when they're trying to bleach their hair, ya know? (no offense to the asians on site!) Anyway...
My suggestion would've been this.
Wow, thanks so much Buffy that was very informative, thanks! You girls that work at Sally's know everything, its great cause I love going to that store and asking them since they never go wrong.
I used "Salon Care 20 Volume Creme Developer"
I have the "Wella SilverLady Toner T14"
http://www.sallybeauty.com/wella-hai...efault,pd.html
Would this toner work or should I just go ahead and use bleach?
I havnt used bleach before, so if you recommend to use that... What one do I buy? thanks buffy!
Anytime I get a gold, orange or yellow color that just is not flattering...I use Shimmering Lights shampoo. It's a purple shampoo that does wonders for my hair. You can buy it at
sallys. BUT if you leave it on too long it WILL leave a purple tent to ur hair but even if you do that..it will wash out eventually. But it takes all that ugly color out of my hair but leaves it bright. I love it!!![]()

I want to type out a detailed response, but my computer is being a total bitch.
This is what I used when I was blonde and needed help correcting brassy-ness or yellow tones.

That can help you pick out the correct toner for your roots. Follow the color wheel on page 12 - you need the opposite of yellow/gold from what I can tell from you description, which is really more of a blue/violet toner than a purple one.
I'm going to post this before my computer freaks out again.
^ Wow, that has so much information, I had to book it under Favs.
I exactly have T14 toner from them seems perfect for light yellow! I just mixed it... it came out light brown which Im scared of. I called their 1-800 line and the lady said to "try it"
Waited 40mins with toner... Came out yellow still.. gah. Sally's is too far from me so Im going to bleach it.

Ahh! I wish I could have responded sooner. I would have told you not to bother with Wella toners. I hate practically everything in their line, their permanents are dark and dingy, their demi's deposit waaay too dark, and their toners turn out so silver and green I'm surprised your hair is still yellow and not some dishwater color! 40 mins with the toner? Dang...that's way too long to leave toner on. Did you shampoo it out? Never shampoo toner or semi/demi colors out. The sulfates in your shampoo will strip them since they're very gentle. Just rinse and condition. Oh well, It was worth a shot before you decided to do something potentially damaging like bleach.
Someone recommended Shimmer Lights Shampoo, which I have as well. It does work great to keep brassiness away, and is meant to be used on blonde/white hair no more than 1-2x a week in replacement of your daily shampoo. If your hair is already neutral or cool toned, yes, it can leave a purple tint. I've never had this problem though since my blonde always has a lot of warmth in it. Although a great product to use to keep brassiness and yellow at bay, Shimmer Lights will not get rid of your issue. This is not a toner, just something that deposits a cool base to help keep minor yellow away as a maintenance thing. It will usually rinse out in the next few washes.
You said you're too far from a Sally's so you're just going to bleach it...but I really, really, REALLY strongly advice you to make the trip and buy professional bleach. I don't trust anything hair color related in grocery stores, it's cheap ingredients, and it almost always comes out different than what you expected.
This is what I use for my highlights that would also work for you...a Roux Violet bleach packet, 20 developer (this will be fine for you to use too), and a red/gold corrector packet. Mix enough developer with the packet of bleach and corrector to get a nice smooth consistency going. Should look like creamy paste. Take a small applicator brush and apply to yellow roots. Make sure to break this up in sections, and to fold back underside of hair to make sure it's saturated on the underneath side of the root. Processing time varies depending on how porous your hair is and how heated your scalp is. Do not apply additional heat, you're doing roots so it should lift quickly. You should be able to see it lift pretty well though since no foils are hiding it. You really shouldn't have to leave it on too long though, 15-20 mins would be my guess. I would take it off when it looks like the inside of a banana, a yellowy-white. Shampoo with as moisturizing of a shampoo you have with cold water (hot water will dry out your hair really bad!), and follow with some protein deep conditioner. Towel dry hair, and wash out your bowl.
Now for toners, WHAT SUCKS, is that Sally's has discontinued practically all of Clairol's toners (their Born Blonde ones were awesome too!). They're telling us that in beauty school now days, students are using demi colors to tone, and toners are hardly being used anymore. Wtf? Anyways, if your Sally store still has some in stock, Born Blonde in something ivory (it will say 'lightest cool blonde' with the crystal packets tones amazingly and gives a gorgeous neutral color when applied to bleached yellowy hair. If not, just get an Ion Demi, a 10NA with a 10 developer. Read the directions, it will tell you how much developer to mix in and how long to leave it on for toning purposes. Only tone the newly bleached part, since you mentioned the rest of your hair is fine and doesn't need toning. Then rinse with cool water and deep condition again if necessary.
This should work.

^^^^Im so glad you posted this...this helped me too..thanx doll!!![]()
Thanks Buffy! The toner did fade in a few parts, espically in the front of the scalp, but the back where the crown is, is where most of the color was left.. My hair dresser said that was coldest part of my head so I maybe I should have kept it in longer? But I was too scared it was going to turn my hair too white, plus I never used a toner I didnt know what to expect. Im going to leave my hair on a rest for a week, and use that purple shampoo. I had one exactly like that from 2 years ago (just by L'oreal professional line). For my now my scalp needs a break! Thanks, I'll look out for that bleach though

great post buffy. i just finished toning down my own bleached hair, too.
