I'm sure I'll get a rash of shit for this, but I also check social media sites of people that I interview. I also google their names, addresses, etc.

I have only had to hire about 10-12 people in the 6 years that I've been in my position, so every person I hire is a MAJOR decision on my part. The people that I hire make up part of my sales team. I need these people to deliver sales results or I take a major hit to my income. Hell, if I don't hire well, it could lead to me losing my job.

So...yeah...I take a lot of care in hiring. If that means I don't interview or hire someone because I saw something that raised even a remote red flag in their Myspace page or whatever...that's bad for them, but I have to make sure I'm not taking chances.

So far, I haven't encountered anything that would dissuade me from hiring/interviewing someone. I think people are getting smart about their online activity that can easily be seen by others.

When you say you look at their social media so you go and ask to be added? I have my FB and MS set to private and only add people I know. I've had potential employers asked to be added (mind you this was before an interview) and I declined. I'll give employers access to my Linked-In account (which I keep professional) but otherwise will not employers to 'friend' me.

If your employer expects a certain performance when you're not on the clock, then they should be paying you for that time, too.

Hahaha, yeah he's the shit, suuuuper talented. If some employer isn't going to interview Me because they don't like the type of music he likes or the fact that he's in a metal band I say fuck them, I don't want the job, because the employer isn't the kind of person I want to be working for.

My job doesn't expect a certain "performance" per say, but they do expect me to maintain certain standards... That's the nature of the world.

No, I would never ask to be added. I look only at what can be seen easily, and I don't pry all that much, honestly. I'll typically search them on Facebook and MySpace, and google their name and address...that's about it. I'm just looking for obvious red flags.

And I'll only do that with someone I've spoken with...I wouldn't do it on any resume that crossed my desk...wouldn't have the time if I wanted to.

That sounds fair and that's what my last employer did. In fact one of my coworkers came in and asked me if I liked drive-ins. A bizarre question until I found out they Googled me and they found several drive in photos I've posted on drive-in sites (I go investigate defunct and current drive ins for a hobby).

As for the employer thing... thats whack. I wouldnt work for a company like that personally. I know times are tough over there so people cant really pick and choose but I like to think what I do in my own time is none of my employers business. We have a pretty relaxed work force here in Australia though... heck here its pretty common in most offices to drink at the pub during lunch! With the boss! haha I found that so weird when I moved here.
I am, once more, grateful to be an Aussie.
