Default Vegetarian preparing to eat meat.

I've been a vegetarian for about 3 years.
I eat some kinds of shellfish, and will very occasionally eat fish, but other than that I haven't had any meat in this time.

I'm going on a trip to Brazil in the Spring with school, and I want to eat meat while I'm there.

I've heard stories of long time vegetarians/vegans eating meat and getting sick from it. I don't know if it's a physical thing or a mental thing, but I really don't want to be sick on my trip.

I'm thinking I should do a trial run and have a meal with meat while I'm here to see how I do. I was thinking of just going to McDonalds and getting a Big Mac, I figured if that doesn't make me sick then nothing will lol.
But then my boyfriend suggested we go out and eat something better (specifically, Texas De Brazil).
Someone else told me I should start with chicken, but I don't see how that would be any different?

And then if I do get sick, how do I avoid getting sick on my trip?
I don't want to go back to eating meat until my trip, but maybe doing it for a week before I leave would get me used it again?

Does anyone have any experience with this or have any advice?
I'm the only vegetarian I know, so I don't really have anyone to ask about it!

I have some vegetarians in my family. One went back to eating meat as well. She started off with chicken since she found it easier to digest. I believe it may have something to do with it being poultry compared to beef (mammal), and is related to the nitrogen levels. Start off with a small portion and test to see if it you feel any nausea, since you're body isn't used to digesting it any more. As a side tip, ginger helps tremendously with nausea.

From what I've observed... Some ex-vegetarians say they had difficulty transitioning back... some can go to a steak-house with no issues.

I've been ovo/lacto vegetarian for 5-6 years now(occasional fish the last couple years so pescatarian, technically). Every once in a while some accidental meat sneaks in.... once I was drunk and ate eggs at my club's buffet. Ooops there was sausage mixed in. The rice at Razoo's comes with lil meat bits in it, ooops forgot to ask. One time my sweet and sour shrimp had a hidden chicken in it. At no point did any of these accidents ever make me sick.

I tend to think the sickness is more often psychosomatic. Hopefully if you aren't freaked out by the idea, you'll be fine.

I was vegan for six years and started eating meat again with no issues at all. I think it really depends. I would start out with a small amount of chicken probably and see how things are.

Best thing to start with? Chicken...grilled. NOT MacDonalds!!!!!!

My husband was vegetarian for 9 years....and then one day on a US Tour, he came down to the hotel restaurant and smelled bacon and eggs. He had three helpings with no ill effects - and never ate vegetarian again.

That happened to me when I tried to eat meat after being vegan. My body just rejected it.

Idea: google average time of digestion for each type of meat - fish, chicken, beef, pork, lamb, etc. And eat the stuff that digests quickly first, and only a little bit. Then progress.

Stay AWAY from the Big Mac, it will make you violently ill, I almost guarantee it. good god. ouch.

In fact, better yet, start with organic, lean meat if possible.

im a vegan and traveled to france and became a vegetarian while there. Not worth it. I mean its an experience... however if i had to do it over i would have never been iffy on my ideas about the world, even while traveling.

That's because those things have more plastic than meat. xD

I'm a vegetarian and I've accidentally eaten meat, with no problems. You'll probably be fine. : )

Same here! Lol. I ate 10 chicken nuggets after 7 years of no meat, and I had no issues

after being vegetarian and now not eating meat that often, i found that burgers are really hard to digest. I never felt sick, just couldn't "go" for a couple days. all other meat-no problem. I would start with chicken and fish.

well i've gone from vegetarian to vegan back to vegetarian and am now trying to get back to vegan..lol. I have really only gotten sick after a long run with no animal products and then eating a bunch of cheese or butter. I would definately stay away from over greased food on your trip (and in general) and really fatty meat. But i think that if you just have only very small portions of meat on your trip than you should probably be fine. I dont think that you will get incapacitated or anything if you do happen to get sick, probably just a tummy ache or a little nausea. Anyways, have a fun trip!!

You could try a nice, meaty fish like mahi mahi, swordfish or tuna. Heavy enough to feel like "Meat" but light enough it shouldn't be too much of a shock to your system.
