    Default Splits!!

    Can you do them? I have always wanted to do them but despite being in dance classes since the age of three, my right front split has gotten 2 inches from the ground, my left front split is about half a foot, and my straddle split is like 9 inches. ugh.

    I talked to a girl at work and she said she could never do them and then one day just forced her body into it, like mind over matter, and now she's the most bendy thing ever.

    Can you do splits? have you always been bendy? Did you have to work at it to get it that way? Does your flexibility go away when you don't stretch? Do you have a stretching regimen to maintain your flexibility? I practice yoga and gradually have gotten more flexible, specifically my hamstrings, and side body muscles- but my splits are just not there yet.

    I am 2 inches away from my right front, and I can hold myself up by just my fingertips now, I feel like within a week if I stretch i'll be able to just chill there. Once I can do it, I'm going to just sit in the split all the time, while on the computer and reading and stuff to maintain the flexibility.

    One of my girls is a former Miss Fitness Australia, and she has the most incredible flexibility and body strength. Must confess, I'm a bit of fan, cos she does the most awesome show - its a mix of gymnastics, dance and fitness tricks. Anyhoo, back on topic...

    The only way she maintains her flexiibilty is to keep stretching and routinely putting her body through the moves she uses in her show. She explained it me that its all about lengthening the muscles and maintaining. Think of it like if you go on a diet and you then you start eating normal you gain back the weight, but if you maintain with a healthy diet you maintain your weight. Hope that makes sense.

    tough one. some people are just more limber than others. i been doing gymnastics for 6 years and could only do splits in the last year [but i lost it again] while a friend of mine who never worked out a day in her life can just slide into it easy. oversplits helps. put your front foot on a slightly elevated surface like a box, couch etc and push or get someone else to push... gently. you get better splits like that i guess.

    I can ~ just keep practicing....stretch as much as you can. My grade school cheerleading coach said to start that in August and by Christmas we would all be able to do them. She was right, actually.

    I am sure flexibility varies from person to person. Yoga, pilates, ballet all help too.

    i've always been pretty flexible but could never quite get into a right split. after quitting ballet i lost most of my flexibility. however, once i started stretching again i was able to get into both splits. yoga also helped. but mainly it was from stretching everyday...mostly on my back and then pushing myself into splits. i also pulled a muscle when i was a lot younger from overstretching (i was already past a split and pushed too hard while i was elevating a split, so don't push TOO hard).

    i can't, but i haven't tried as hard as i could've. i'd stretch, but not consistently. i used the techniques in pavel tsatsouline's relax into stretch, and they really improved my flexibility, but i didn't stick with it long enough to go all the way. keep meaning to get back to it.
