Default Did I Kill My Metabolism?

I tried to post something ot this effect yesterday but my computer bitched out... so if another thread like this somehow pops up I apologize! ANYWAY- Ive been a chronic yo-yo dieter for as long as Ive been in charge of feeding myself, and most of the time I'm able to stick with it for two months or so but then I get broke, or depressed, or its the holidays blah blah blah.... So now I'm getting back into shape hitting the gym hard for about 4 months now, but the damn scale WILL NOT BUDGE from 145! Im glad to be at 145 its an improvement from 160 but I'd like to get back down to my 'best' weight which is about 115-120 lbs (I'm 5'5"-5'6", big hips but otherwise pretty small frame I think). What gives? Ive hear that all the dieting on and off can make your metabolism take a nose dive. I'm eating about 1200 calorias a day (maybe less depends on how busy my day is) to try and get over this plateu and working out harder cardio wise so maybe thats making it worse? My diet is not as good as it could be but I'm very carb-conscious (I try to eat less then 25g a day, usually in the form of milk and my protein shake mix). How can I start losing weight again?! Sorry turned into a ramble but any advice helps! Thanks-

The problem with Yo Yo dieting is you lose weight but you lose muscle as well & when you start eating again you are fatter. The key is small meals throughout the day with some type of exercise. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn which means the more you can eat. So to create muscle you need to do some type of weight training...resistance..& food. There are many types of programs out there for the weights & find one the your body likes..grows muscle..with the right amount of rest, reps & sets. If you look at food as fuel, then whatever your day consists of eat the right amount of nutrients for that day. If I was going to sit around the house & not do anything then high protein & low carbs would work for that day. If I was doing a heavy leg workout that day then I would take in more carbs. That's my spin on things & everybody is different...

Hmm I wonder about a cleanse... the guys at nutrishop where I get my protein powder reccomend one thats based around some kindof tea?? I've done the fat flush kindof cleanse before which I like because you just eat reeeallly healthy but it's too hard to maintain with school and work, also expensive to buy all the foods they recommend, and there arent many other options since its a very restricted diet as far as what you can have more than the amount..... Im definitely on board with lifting, I just increased my plates/ resistance and sets on ALL my exercises... so we'll see! Has anyone done a cleanse that they liked??

I doubt you killed your metabolism, unless you would go for 3+ days without eating. A lot of people find that they plateau when they do chronic cardio, which is sounds like you do. Also the quality of those 1200 calories count a lot. Make sure you're eating densely nutritious food.

I would NOT recommend a colon cleanse. Most of that stuff isn't really going to do anything for you. Your colon is self-cleansing. And it'll only encourage you to continue yo-yo dieting if you keep trying to find the easy way out.

I know that isn't really advice, but I thought I'd speak up to save you the money and effort.

ETA: Here's some more info about cardio plateaus. http://www.truestarcollege.com/membe...1ML3P1A28.html

OH! Also, don't expect to lose weight from exercising. Your body can build muscles (yes, even during cardio), which increases your weight. Focus more on how your body looks.

Have your thyroid checked and make sure the doctors are using the new thyroid guidelines (google them)

Cross Training! There's nothing wrong with your metabolism, you've just "Plateaud". Although you may be doing lots of cardio, or lots of this or that, you will eventually plateau. Your body has gotten used to what your doing is all.

You need to "trick" your metabolism back into fat burning mode.

I personally love P90X. I've dropped 14lbs. in 6 weeks and I know it's because I'm doing something different at each workout.

Calories and quality of calories do matter. If you're trying to lose weight, you have to count calories. But be careful of "under eating". It sounds weird and contradictory at first, but if you are burning calories from working out and not feeding your body enough calories, it will slow your metabolism (starvation mode) and the scale won't move.

Rotate your workout routines every time you exercise.
    Day 1 Cardio
    Day 2 Strength (weight training)
    Day 3 Yoga
    Day 4 Upper Body
    Day 5 Legs & Back
    ...and so on.

Mix it up and you'll start losing again.

    Hope this helps.

Hmmm I've heard good things about p90x but it looks sooo hard I'm afraid I'll try it and get frustrated... My husbands a really fit guy, has to be for his job, and he even thought it was hard. I guess thats what I need tho to really see results, I havent been mixing it up much. As far as thyroid I hadn't even thought of that! Will google it right now!

If you know you're not eating the greatest... that could be the problem.

I'd say best bet is fixing that first.

There a couple things that could be going on:
    1) everyone is different: some people carbs make them keep weight, others dairy, etc. Maybe for you carbs aren't a problem for your body, and its something else: dairy? sodium? I know a couple people who once they found out they were lactose intolerant dropped a bunch of weight.

    2) depending on how old you are you just might not be able to be as thin as you were in high school anymore, its just how aging works. Where are the numbers for your goal weight from? Did you weigh this much at one point in your life or is it just what you WANT to weigh? Find out your body fat % because that is much more helpful in determining a goal weight than BMI is, it will tell you what your lean body mass is (only including essential fats, basically the minimum weight your body can physically be based on frame size, height, etc without you endangering yourself) I think for women the minimum BF% is 10-12%? I can't remember off the top of my head. Anyways, I think athletic is 15%-20% and normal is 20-25%. If you are already in the normal or athletic range it may be difficult for you to lose more weight, you said you already lost 15 pounds right?

    3) Some people are just not skinny. This is not an excuse, and I am not telling you to stop trying to achieve a better figure, but please have realistic expectations! (which is why BF % is important to know) Maybe your body just holds on to fat more than other people's? It's not "fair" but its life, if you have that body type its a hard pill to swallow but it has to happen sometime Maybe you can still lose another 10-15 pounds if you really work at it, but 25 pounds off of 145 is a pretty significant amount and I'd be worried you'd have to do drastic dieting to achieve those results

I would keep at it though, get those calculations and try to keep eating healthy, its hard when you don't see results, I know! If in another month you've stuck to your diet and excersise regime and nothing's moving (make sure to check your measurements too! Not just the scale!) then maybe something's up or maybe you're at the healthiest weight you can be! Keep trying though, good on you

True that about the eating, ive been cleaning up my diet but it is still not as good as it could be mostly because I am broooooke and subsisting on like whatevers left in the pantry, which is at this point nothing good..... BUT point taken and definitely at the top of my to do list to get healthy foods ASAP.

As far as the weight I had in mind it's what I weighed in HS when I was running track, so i know I could get down to that (120) and then still prob lose some! Im kinda stocky I think but have small wrists and ankles, which I always though was an indicator of a small frame?? Maybe not haha.. Im only 22 so I hope it's not age slowing me down already! Not sure what my percent body fat is.......

Thanks again for all the input!

Alternate your calories. Best way to get a sluggish metabolism moving again. Have a low calorie day followed by a normal calorie day. rinse and repeat. Also running is awesome.

alternating sounds clever, Ive always heard that the best way to keep making progress with workouts is kindof the same you have to keep switching it up on your body or it gets used to what your doing

A good general way to tell if your metabolism is depressed or not is by taking your temperature in the morning, immediately upon awakening. Make sure you put the thermometer in your armpit not your mouth. If your body temperature is consistently low over a few days then you will need further help.

To do so, go to a naturopath and get a full panel hormone test. If they are reputable they will do blood and saliva, and will include thyroid, cortisol, estrogen, etc.

Many people who cannot lose weight despite correct diet and excercise suffer from sub-clinical hypothyroidism (google it, it's a trip), cortisol imbalances, or insulin resistance. A naturopath will be able to diagnose any of these imbalances.

After, consult with a trainer and a nutritionist. It's like anything else, pay the pros to help you; you will save yourself a lot of guesswork and headache in the end.

Rule #1 - See your doctor BEFORE dieting.

Rule #2 - Get a health panel done - i.e. blood work to check all your vitamin & hormone levels.

If you are doing everything right but are getting "stuck" at a certain weight, it's probably caused by something being out of balance, & often its something you won't be able to diagnose easily on your own. I recommend finding a good D.O. over an M.D. for this, since they tend to be more interested in fixing the actual cause rather than just medicating the symptoms. Without any sort of insurance seeing a good D.O. & doing blood tests should run you around $200 for the testing & initial review.

yep. Im going to see a doctor this week, and asking abt this. The main reason though is that after I work out (i do this 6 days a week, when something crazy isnt going on anyway!) Ive been getting super bad cramps, feels like period cramps but no period. Super weird because its definitely only after I work out..... ANYWAY just going to go in and be like 'please fix! Also if you could perscribe magical weight loss pills thatd be great mm kay?' SIgh if only.....

When I told a doctor who is a friend of mine of my girlfriends problem with loosing weight she recommended HCG shots. (Basically years of yo-yo dieting etc)

The shots will jumpstart your metabolism from the dead. Something about your body instinctively using calories to protect the fetus or something. I don't know- I haven't tried it but it is worth looking into.
