Default Tipping on pick up/take out orders in restaurants...

i order food for pick up a lot. and i do tip. but it occurred to me- is tipping expected for pick up?

if the person handing me the food is friendly then i have no problem shelling out a tip.

but their are two places that i often pick up food from that have really delicious food, but the people giving it to me are not so friendly. all they need to do is hand me food, collect my cash, and return change if necessary in a reasonable not hostile fashion.

i think i might stop tipping at my local sushi joint. Somehow this takes the guy like 10 minutes... mind you it is usually before noon that i am getting food from them and it is usually dead and i am the only one at the bar to get my food. and on top of that he is just not even friendly.

so is it socially expected to tip when ordering pick up? and if so, how much is standard? is it still 15%+ like you would tip a waiter who actually had to pay attention to you and interact with you and remember your order etc?
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

    I don't tip when I'm only picking up a take-out order.
I had a girlfriend who bartended at an Italian chain restaurant where you picked up your call-in orders at the bar. She said she almost never got tips on those orders and really didn't expect them because she wasn't waiting on anyone. She likened it to the job of the hostess, it only took her a minute to ring someone up.

I never tipped for getting take-out. No one ever asked me to either.

A smaller family restaurant that I always went to, did ask me for a tip before I left. It was 5$ and the waitress said "that'll be 7$" from me. I never went back there since the food got worse, but was suprised they asked me for a tip.

Tipping isn't expected for pick up. It's nice though that you do. Maybe he'll be nicer next time when you don't tip after this time !

    I never tip for takeout.

When at restaurants, I tip for being served ONLY...I am not going to tip someone for doing their job.

I'm not a cheap-ass either...my baseline tip is 20% when eating out, and I usually go higher than that....but I refuse to tip when it's obvious that it's just panhandling.

Also...when I was in college, the owner of the restaurant I worked at put up a tip jar at the counter. This place was a combo restaurant and ice cream parlor. When people wanted ice cream, they'd usually just come in, get their scoops, and leave...no table service required. The tip jar was by the ice cream, and the owner of the place told all of us "we'll put a tip jar up...it's not like we expect people to tip, but if they do, you all can split it at the end of the day."

When you were working the ice cream, you were paid a regular hourly wage.

Tipping for takeout is like tipping someone for selling you a shirt at the Gap.

I've tossed out tips at places like Outback when I picked up a big order, got help putting it in my car and people were exceptionally prompt.

When I pick up Chinese, I don't tip.

When I tip, I tip well. But I don't toss out a tip for just anything... I also hate being asked for a tip.

Never tip for takeout, the tip is for the service which you won't be getting. It would be like tipping at mcdonalds.

To me it depends. If it's a situation where I know a waitress puts the order together I tip, I just don't tip the full amount. For instance I tip at Applebees and at several restaurants. I don't tip when picking up Chinese since the owner is the one who puts it together.

I've always tipped for take out. Typically the bar handles take-out orders. Bartenders make the $2.15(or whatever it is) wage. They don't get a full hourly wage like the guy at the Gap. So I tip, but I don't tip as much as I would a waitress because its less work.

I order food at work every night, and I tip the hell out of everyone I order regularly from. And you know what? They give me extra ingredients, lower the prices, hustle on over to my club even when it is jammed in their restaurant with tourist orders, etc.

But some place I agree it would be a waste of money.

Oh and also it's way less work than being a waiter/waitress. I've had every kind of job you can imagine, but I could not handle being a waiter dealing with rude people. I quit after a few weeks, hated every minute of it. I have worked in restaurants doing other things--cooking, cook prep, nasty dishwashing and pot washing (worst of the four), and didn't mind nearly as much as waiting on crotchety old ladies.

When you say "puts the order together" what does that mean? They're taking your food from the kitchen and putting it in a bag. Actually, the kitchen does that for them.

I tip when someone brings me something be it a delivery driver or the server who brings the order to my car at the "curbside pick-up" type places I go to. I don't tip when I pick up food.

I always tip something..more for curb side...Most of the people that do takeout or waiting are single mothers.

When I'm home in Burque I tip at Sushi King since they do go through extra effort for me there.

I don't bother tipping the damn Chinese restaurant here since they always fuck up somebody's order and they're fucking cheapasses with soy sauce.

In the cases I mention the waitress takes the order, gives it to the cook, then bags it, just like she would at a regular order.

For take-out, I tip $2 most of the time unless I'm super low on cash (I won't use my card to add in a tip unless it is rounding off the number and will equal about $2 or so). If it is a very big order for several people, I'll make sure that the order is precise and they didn't add or forget an item. I'll then tip $5-10 depending on how big the total is and whether I have a surplus of cash.

And for take-out, I'm referring to call-in take-outs, not going in and ordering, for the most part. If I'm just getting something for myself and it is super cheap and quick food, I don't tip.

If it's an establishment where a waitress/bartender takes care of the order, I will leave a small tip, but if there's a specific area for take out where it's just one person and that's all they do, then I generally don't. Maybe I won't ask for change back, but that's about it. I figure tipping is for the service of being served at a table, not for handing me my food.

For take-out, if the people I deal with are nice, I'll usually leave a buck or two. For sushi take-out, it's a good thing to do to put a couple of bucks in the chef's tipjar, even if you don't tip anyone else. Those dudes remember faces and will hook you up.
