Default Is Pole Work that Necessary??

So I plan to start dancing in a month or so and i've started taking pole dancing classes to sort of help me out. I despise that pole and I hate floorwork because my knees hurt so bad afterwards. I actually have a couple of friends who are in the industry. "Shannon" has a pole in her home and can do lots of tricks. "Angel" can do pole work but doesn't. She basically told me that stage work was a waste of time because she doesn't make a lot of money while on stage and she makes the majority of her money on lapdances and VIP sales. Both girls are hustlers and have made a really good living out of stripping.

My question is since I hate pole dancing, can I just focus most of my efforts on working the floor instead. I mean I know I have to do some stage work and floor work. But is it worth it for me to try to be really good at pole dancing and tricks?

Not at all. You'll more likely than not make exponentially more money on the floor selling dances (and VIPs/CRs if your club has them) than doing a stage set. Focus on your hustling skills, rather than your pole dancing skills. As long as you can move around on stage, make eye contact, and don't look bored, you'll be fine up there.

Thank you Ladies!! That is so good to hear because I struggle with the pole. I love watching the more experienced girls but I haven't mastered anything yet. "Angel" once told me that the only thing she thinks about while she's on stage is how much money she's not making because she's not working the floor, lol.

I do want to get better though but something tells me I'm just going to be one of those girls who just uses the pole for balance or as a sexy accessory.

Normally you can make more money in lapdances & VIP rooms, but it's good to be a good performer because your stage time is really your means of "advertising". You need to think of your stage time as being similar to a television commercial, where your motive is to attract more interest. However, your friend Angel is right... once you are an established dancer you will typically feel like the stage is causing you to lose money because its biting away at time that you could be doing privates. However, I'd say most entertainers don't get to that point. When should you get to that point? When you are practically ALWAYS giving dances rather than trying to sell. When you are in the lap dance area & multiple times per night you have to leave customers (who want more dances) because of your stage rotation, that is when you need to talk to your manager or DJ about buying yourself off the rotation list so you aren't pulled away from customers who are already paying. I do this at multiple clubs. If I ever happen to have time in between then I ask the DJ to put me on stage, but that means I may only go one stage once or twice per night... at times when I don't already have a customer lined up.

Until then, do everything you can to make your stage shows great. The bad thing about pole tricks is they take away from customer interaction, & they don't really show customers how you might perform in a private dance area - which are the things you should focus on while on stage.

Oh god. How could you hate pole dancing?!

Either way. Based on what I've heard, you really don't have to know any pole tricks at all, though a very basic spin might not hurt. I mean you could twirl around the pole for all you wanted or use the pole as support or for balance. But you at least want to look good up on stage.

It's all pretty much been said...I will just add that many of the top clubs don't even HAVE poles. Your money will be made by selling dances and VIP hours.

I'm gonna try and keep practicing but focus on my hustle as well. It just hurt so bad. I was so bruised. I guess I just have to get used to it. I really wanted to do something that set me apart from the other girls like skilled pole dancing or belly dancing. In black clubs (I'm black by the way lol), they love the booty popping and clapping and I'm not much of a booty popper or clapper. I felt like doing something unique on stage might up my earnings but right now I suck.

not at all necessary but it is FUN!, if you learn a couple tricks it will make your show look more interesting thus better advertising, and it definitely pleases the women and couples who come in because women LOVE seeing pole dancing.

I'm not a great pole dancer, but I know how to incorporate it into my stage show and can do some spins and invert.. if no one is paying attention to the stage it's always fun to climb to the top of the 20 foot pole and hang out there until people are like WHOAHHHH SHES UP THERE!!! and come to the stage to see what you're going to do next... in my case I just slide down like a fireman- and the other day I did a split from sliding down for the first time which got applause which i thought was pretty cool..

anyway- it depends on your club. My club isn't stage centric, but the customers definitely appreciate a good show and the other girls put a lot of energy (for the most part) into their shows so it's somewhat competitive to play good music/have good moves/cute outfits and put on a great show...

I've been dancing for almost 4 years and I've gotten by without being a good pole dancer and have a pretty entertaining advertising stage show and make great money

Just do what comes naturally, and eventually, you'll find something that will set you apart. You may already stand you and just don't know it.

Nor do most top clubs allow floor work. All the more reason to learn how to actually sell, dance & pose since "entertaining" without the floor or pole is hard for many in our industry.
