    Dizzy Public pestering of smokers

    rant like

    thing i find annoying:

a random stranger feel entitled to go up to another stranger currently smoking and inform them on the dangers of smoking.

i cant tell you how many times i was smoking outside a club and total randoms would come up to me and be like smoking is bad for you, dont smoke you shouldnt smoke.

    i find this rude coz

is it also publicly acceptable to go up to fat people at mcdonalds and be like put down the fork! youre fat! dont try and sugarcoat it coz youll eat that too! that burger is gonna clog your arteries and youre going straight to mcdicks hell!

im sorry for my nonsensical ramblings but does either of the above examples happen to anyone else?

People should be entitled to do whatever they want, even if it kills them. If it does harm anyone should be able to go about it unmolested.

This mental picture made me LOL.

Uhh. It depends on the circumstances.
A lot of smokers are inconsiderate fucks who smoke in 'non-smoking' public areas and RIGHT NEXT stranger's small children.
I don't think it's okay to be like "smoking is bad for you" blah blah... but I WILL say something to a smoker who lights up standing right next to my step kid at a playground or something. Like... that's great that you're helping your brat on the slide... does it require everyone else's kid inhaling second hand smoke? Seriously?

I am an ex smoker... I never lit up next to people's kids/in crowds. It's just not considerate.

Perhaps they are tired of walking by your cigarette butts you throw on the ground outside that club. They know you would never stoop down to pick them up so they are frustrated. Most non smokers could care less about someone smoking. It's often the byproducts ( cigarette butts and second hand smoke ) that annoy them.

Oh but you are going to say you never toss your cigarette butts on the ground right? It must have been those other smokers.

I've never tossed a cigar butt on the ground of property that didn't belong to me.

I rarely see cigar butts on the ground period. Yet I get the same harassment.

I think it's very rude when people smoke in public areas around others. When I smoked, I always stayed very close to the ashtrays outside. I didn't light up in crowded areas. I always hated when I was out and someone lit up right next to me, even when I was an active smoker. I don't really give a flying fuck what they want to do with their bodies and their health...god knows I've certainly done enough bad shit myself. But I don't think it's okay for them to force their habits on other people. The "dangers of second-hand smoke" aside, it's just annoying. Sometimes I just don't feel like being around the smell of cigarette smoke; it gives me a headache. And when I'm outside trying to enjoy the nice day, I'm doing it because I want to be getting fresh air and sunshine...not cigarette smoke and ash.

Next time someone tries to lecture you, fire it back at them. If their wearing leather, tell them that leather is evil and animals are horribley slaughtered for that coat. If they're a bottle-blonde tell them peroxide will fry their brain. If their fat... Well you get it. You can always pick something out to bitch at them about.

Maybe they'll think twice next time before lecturing an adult about a legal activity.

Of course it's rude when people tell you that shit. Everyone's a fucking expert on everything.

It's like when people find out I'm a History major, then decide to tell me they know more about it than I do because they saw a Ken Burns documentary once, or they've seen TONS of shit about WWII on the History channel. I'm like, "I specialize in the Tudor dynasty, not WWII," but they still know more about everything than I do.

It gives them validation to be judgmental. They all have small penises, or never get laid, or whatever. Maybe they get all happy for a day after they assist you in having the epiphany that smoking is BAD for you ("gasp...no...really? REALLY? WOW, total stranger, this is the first time in my life I've heard that! THANK YOU, mysterious stranger, for saving my life! I am forever in your debt! Would you like my firstborn child? It is the least I can do...")...but more likely than not, they're going to continue being miserable. So, good for them. Whatever floats their boat.

Sorry, my fault, I think I lead things off topic.
I meant that to say that there are certain times where it is okay to pester smokers.

But not while they're off alone smoking at a club or something. And certainly not to pester them about the fact that it's bad for them. That's just stupid. That's just obnoxious.

    so yeah.
    i think its rude.
My mother smokes, and she goes into a corner or an area that doesnt have people... She never had a problem. People judge and always will... some know how to keep their mouths shut, some dont.

I think its rude, smoking is a choice, whether you decided to smoke and others dontm they should not comment on your choices. Dont let such comments get to you... give them a smart remark back. "You know 2nd hand smokes, gives you cancer, I'd walk away before it gets in your system."

When someone warns me of the dangers of smoking, I warn them of the dangers of annoying someone trying to get a nicotine fix.

While I would never think to approach a stranger and tell them it's bad for them to smoke...

after watching my mom die a suffocating, horrible, painfully slow and excruciating death at the age of 65 because of smoking, I don't really have a lot of sympathy for anyone that would do that to themselves.

I love my mom but she robbed the people that loved her of 15-20 more years with her because she refused to stop smoking. The last 5-6 years were spent in and out of hospitals and nursing homes, and the last year we added hospice to that list.

I learned all about things like COPD, gas exchange, edema, congestive heart failure, and emphysema, plus all the thousands of dollars in drugs needed to treat these unnecessary diseases.

So, no, I would never tell a random stranger that it's bad for them, that's rude...but don't expect my sympathy either. It hurts me every time I see someone smoking because it reminds me of my dead mother.

No one asked for your sympathy.

I watched a family member eat themselves to death years ago. That way pretty horrific too. I fully admit that when I see an overweight person scarfing down junk food in public, I feel like I'm watching a junkie shoot up with heroin.

But I keep my mouth shut because it's none of my damned business. If we all harassed each other over little things that bother us personally due to past experiences, no one is this country would be able to go outside without being cornered by some nosy douchebag.

That is hilarious! Thanks for that smile hon! : )

I'm so on the fence on this issue...On one hand, yes it does affect non-smokers (second hand smoke etc etc) however, pretty much everything is bad for you! Cars pump out exhaust fumes that are just as damaging as second hand smoke, and in urban areas are just as much an uneccesary luxury, but no-ones trying to stop that! Nasty food and heavy perfume smells make me want to vomit (and actually have once or twice!) but again, no one says a word.
At the end of the day, I feel like we all just have to be CONSIDERATE and recognize that we SHARE this world, and that its never going to be exactly how one person wants it, all the damn time. That means that smokers need to avoid smoking next to children, in crowded areas, etc and pick up your butts! At my work, this just means that every day we sweep up the step where all our butts are. Simple. And it means that non-smokers....leave us the hell alone!!! Whenever some total stranger comes up and starts hassling me when I'm quietly smoking outside MY shop during the day, telling me its a disgusting habit, I should tell them that being a RUDE, NASTY, HATE-FILLED person is a pretty disgusting habit too!
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

Walking around outside in any large city is worse for your lungs than second hand smoke.

When you come 30 feet over to me, to lecture me about my hobby which is perfectly legal... No, it's none of your business.

If you don't like being around my perfectly legal activity, go elsewhere.
