Default What do you tip when you go out?

Mostly meaning waitresses and bartenders. I am a very generous tipper but being a bartender now so many people are just assholes or don't tip at all and not to be conceited but I do my job right, I take care of my customers and am always very friendly and outgoing. I have some regulars that are very generous tippers as well and I really appreciate them, but wtf is with the people that leave nothing even for great service?

Even if I get crappy service I still leave something, I could never completely stiff someone, I wouldn't live with myself. Going to regular bars I will tip usually $1 per beer or $2 per mixed drink. I have a lot of bartender friends I go see too so I tip them even more.

    So, how do you tip?

Depends but usually a percentage. I normally tip 20% to servers because I used to be one and it's a hard job.

LOL, I just remembered something from a while back when I still lived in NC. There was this 1 pizza place/bar I went to a lot. This really nerdy older guy was usually bartending when I went in. I would usually only order a slice of pizza and a beer or 2. I lived so close to this place sometimes I would go in there 3 or 4 times a week or before work because it was walking distance to my club at the time. I would usually tip about $5, which was a lot for about $10 worth of stuff but he seemed nice and he did a good job, he always took care of me. Well, me tipping him a lot made him think I had a crush on him. So I saw him out at another bar in the area I frequented, he started hanging out there a lot too which I thought was getting kinda strange, then he finally got the balls to say he wanted to take me out, he thought we hit it off well. I was like oook dude, I don'[t like you like that and never went back in the pizza place again which sucked cause I loved that place.

    Bad service - 10%
    Okay service - 15%
    Good service - 20%
Fabulous service - 25 - 30% (Generally for people like my hairstylist)

Hmmm - if I'm in a club/bar setting, and paying for my drinks in cash ill usually tip depending on the change I get back. If my vodka cranberry is $6.50, I'll leave a Toonie (two dollar coin) on the bar. I really don't stop to think about percentages in a busy setting. If I'm paying at the end via card, I'll just add on 15 to 20% depending on service.

I would never stiff a bartender. Ever. That's awful.

    ^ Similar here....

Bad service - a flat £2.00, or 10%, whichever is less. If the service is like....in-excusably bad....then nothing.

    OK/Average service - 10%

    Good service - 15%

    Fabulous service - 30%

Again, like 'Kylea2', I tip really well for people like my hairstylist, or particularly helpful cab drivers, efficient and friendly hotel staff, etc etc. However I always tip low, if the establishment has automatically added a Service charge. I hate that.

I guess I'm strange but I stiff assholes. I've only had two or three total asshole waiters or waitresses in my life but they got nothing from me when it came time for the tip. I'm not grateful for being treated like shit by some total stranger so I don't leave a gratuity. I complained too, after eating so they wouldn't spit in my food, and then I never went back to those places.

Otherwise, I leave 15 % or 20 % if the service was better than average.

I didn't tip shit at olive garden tonight they took forever to bring our drinks and then we got seated next to a VERY large party that included dozens of screaming children wailing like banshees and running about.

If I get an absolute shitty server, I tip exactly one penny. It lets them abandon the thinking that "Maybe they just forgot" and lets them know "This is how much I think your service was worth at the absolute most."

I'm a college student and not dancing anymore, so I tip as much as I can, but unfortunately it doesn't often exceed 10-12%

the thing is.. the hostess seated you and the bartender made your drinks not your servers fault.

i tip 20% or more at restaurants. i tip bartenders the same if i have a tab. if i don't have a tab from 1-3 per drink. like at first I'll put down 3 to get their attention then 2 or 1 after.
the tip should be included in what you budget for eating or drinking out. skimping on the tip because you cant afford it is not cool. less than 15% is an outdated tip amount unless the service sucks.

Usually $2 per drink from a cocktail waitress

I always tip based on the value of what I'm getting, not the price. This especially kicks-in during happy hour or BOGO

Here's a funny recent tip story...
My girlfriend & I were out to dinner two weekends ago and were seated next to a loud group of spray-tanned, twenty-something, Jersey-Shore-lookin' douchenozzles who were so loud, we could hear them swearing & laughing as we were being led from the hostess stand through the restaurant... before we could even see them!

I stopped short of the table and told the hostess we needed to be seated somewhere on the other side of the restaurant or we were leaving. Without saying anything, she looked at them, looked back at me, and led us to the other side. I tipped her $10.

My girlfriend said that hostess would now probably walk every patron over there in hopes of getting a tip to be relocated.

Bad service. Nothing and I tell them why.

Regular service, nothing exceptional 15% $1.50 per $10.00 rounded up.

    Excellent and helpful 25%

I'm at work now working the lunch shift, being out here in a big non Americanized Asian population I expect that from them. I work in local owned bar but the chain places out here add a shitty 10% to the bill, needs to be increased to atleast 15% I say. My boss allows me to add 10% to the bill if Japanese tourists come in but not on anyone else. I get a lot of military in who are usually pretty good at tipping but that is really all I can expect to get tips from because most locals here don't tip at all or a very small tip if they do. Anyways, to get to my point there is a man in here now, he used to come in like 2-3 times a week and NEVER tips, now he comes in once every week or 2, I am still nice to him but I let it be known that he gets no special treatment from me, if I am busy and he comes in he is last priority. Sorry but he knows he is an ass for not tipping and still comes in like he is doing nothing wrong. If I never tipped I would never go to the same place again, I would be too ashamed of myself. I never mess with anything he orders but if he frequents lots of places I'm sure someone does, that is what I would be afraid of if I was a regular stiffer.
