    Default Makeup Consultation

I'm looking to try to get a more normal job (at least for during the day ), and I'm going to start networking in the professional world pretty soon after I graduate. I've never really learned how to do my makeup to look professional. I have the high school look down pat (a little eyeliner on the outer corner, mascara) and the stripper look mastered as well (a lot of everything). I'd love to learn how to apply makeup in a way that looks very natural (I don't want to use foundation at all) and looks professional (like I'm not a highschooler and have some clue as to what looks good on me).

Have any of you ever gotten a consultation? Where? Was it worth it? Would you recommend it to me?

You can't go wrong with a tinted moisturizer (to even out your complexion/redness), mascara, a peachy blush, and a nude lip gloss.

This link's got very well reviewed tinted moisturizers: http://www.totalbeauty.com/content/g...d-moisturizers
I hear what you're saying, but I truly am makeup retarded. (And style retarded as well. I still dress like a high schooler, too, so I'll probably be attempting clothes as the next step.) That being said, I'll definitely take your opinion into consideration!

A smokey brown is always safe for a professional look.

If you want a natural look, go for nudes, beiges and light brown tones.

It's really the opinion on consultations I'm most interested in hearing. I feel like, if I could've gotten anything helpful from a few words or even a how-to video by this point, I wouldn't be asking this question!

First try searching YouTube ~ they have a ton of tutorials, from natural to dramatic and freaky.

As far as a consultation, I have had two - one from MAC and one from Lancome. The MAC one was pretty dramatic with a black and silver smoky eye and the works. The Lancome one was more natural with basic neutrals.

I cannot do good eye makeup to save my life so I watch YT a lot for specific looks. As far as getting a consultation go to a counter you know is more professional ~ I would recommend Bobbi Brown actually for higher end and maybe Lancome/Estee Lauder for mid-range if you are wanting more of a natural look. You usually have to buy like $50 worth of products but it's easy to get to that point. Try to look more towards dark brown eyeliners and mascaras for a daytime look, nude/pinkish lip, nothing to glossy/glittery/heavy.

Oh and communicate what you are looking for!! I didn't with the MAC one and I looked clownish (not knocking MAC, they are one of my faves!)

Actually Bobbi Brown makes my favorite 'understated' cosmetics...the ones I wear when I go out with my momma.

And don't forget neutral nails! That's a huge thing. And a while new thread, lol.

^Ugh, yeah...I never do my nails. I have big hands (not mannish, but larger than many women's), and painting my nails only makes them look bigger. I think I'm going to keep my nails trimmed low and stick to a clear gloss...?

Maybe try mineral makeup?? I used to wear that in the office. Nice light cover and natural product. I used to just wear a light beige eye shadow and only line my upper lid (any other time I line inside and outside of both top and bottom), small amount of mascara and beige tone lipstick.

I haven't had one with Clinique but I would guess they would be good for "work" looks. My mom and her friends all wear it.

Trimmed nails, clear gloss is a good way to go. Make sure you change the clear coat once a week so your nails don't yellow.

MAC makeup consultations are great for stripping makeup, party makeup and modeling makeup, but I find their consultants are too heavy handed for an 'everyday look'.

Sephora has makeup consultants, but I have no idea how well they are trained in actual application - it's mostly a sales job.

Theres a drug store chain here in Canada that is pretty run-of-the-mill, but they opened a new lcation downtown that has consultants who teach how to apply makeup using drug store brands. If I was learning how to apply '9 to 5 makeup' that's where I'd go. If you can't write off 50 dollar foundation anymore, then why bother buying it, y'know? Drug store stuff is getting better and better all the time.

Another cost saving option is to go to a training college for makeup artists, and be really specific about what you want. Tip them well and explain that you need to be shown how to apply this yourself.

I wish I had more info on this for you. It seems most makeup counter consultations (lancome, MAC, etc) are really in it for the comissions, so they whack as many products on your face as they can hoping you'd buy more.

I really like Kandee Johnson's makeup blog, she gives great makeup advice and has some great tutorials. Her blog doesn't really feature makeup advice anymore but you can look through past months and pull up all the old videos

If you want to go for a softer natural look, try contacting some makeup artists in your area who can help you out. Normally looking through bridal websites can lead you to some good make-up artists in your area. They can show you professional techniques that are lighter, but will make a big difference. Depending on the make-up artist a consultation could range from about $65 to $150 on average. If you have friends graduating around the same time, see if they are interested in this too, since most make-up artists will offer discounted rates for party consultations.

Oh yeah, I also forgot to add that I am obsessed with Laura Mercier products. All of her makeup is meant to be very natural and neutral looking, and the makeup artists that work at the counter will demo the products on your face before you buy it. If you buy the makeup from Nordstrom or Sephora and don't like the way it works, you can return it used and still be refunded. They have great return policies on cosmetics.

Legallybrunette21 and makeupgeek are pretty good ones to look up on youtube. I would also go to the makeupgeek website and register for the forum there and anyone there can give you really good advice.

Go get a consultation. The lady should be able to explain/show you how to/ how much to apply for the look you want.
The look your talking about is super easy. You just gotta see how its done once or twice to get it. Dont worry, I used to be make up retarded to

I also love Kandee Johnson (or however she spells her name) on youtube!! She is very very good. Although her teeth whitening stuff didn't do anything for me.... sigh...

I definitely agree that you should try to get a consultation. And not at a 'free counter' where they'll swipe some eyeshadow across your face and call it a day... go and actually PAY for it, or to a place where they make you spend 50 bucks on the products later, like MAC. I mean, come on.... do you do YOUR best work for free?

I recommend going to see someone at MAC. While it is true that their usual looks are a little heavy handed and more evening-appropriate, they do tend to hire talented artists, and a makeup artist's JOB is to LISTEN TO YOU!!! My mom, who is a cancer survivor and never wore a stitch of makeup in her LIFE went to see a makeup artist at MAC, and the girl was very very sensitive to mom's needs.... that she didn't want to have the feel of heavy foundation... did not want to go too thick on liner, etc.... basically, their JOB is to give you the look you want, and show you how to achieve it yourself.

It is a good idea to look up some youtube tutorials before you go, just to get an idea for a starting-off point, or bring along some magazine pics you like, or something.

    Good luckkkkk!!

I've never worn foundation per se, but I do love the Stilla Illuminating Moisturizer (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P150723). It's very sheer, with a nice dewy finish. Depending on your skin, it's more than enough to hide imperfections (I'm assuming that you, like me, have lovely raw foodie skin ).

Other than that I like a little very sheer shadow more to brighten up the area (Lancome in Vue is lovely http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits...w.jpg?sh=1000P

Mascara -- I like Korres Deep Color Mascara (all-natural, but super super lengthening).

Lippies, for something naturalish but noticeable, how about Tarte Lip Sheer in Saturday (a sort of rich red http://www.sephora.com/browse/produc...categoryId=B70)

Sorry for the link flood and not at all answering your question about makeup consults, which I've never had.

There's a lot I want to write about where to go and not go, etc. but the gist of it is...

avoid Sephora (amateurs) and Neiman Marcus (way too pushy).

MAC can be okay, but they tend to make you look like a drag queen.

I personally love Nordstroms out of all department stores, so I would walk around the cosmetics section, find someone who's makeup you like, and ask them to show you how they did it.

I love Bobbi Brown (foundation color selection, and they have a really beautiful very natural foundation called Skin), Trish McEvoy, Laura Mercier (love the tinted moisturizer and loose translucent powder), NARS (the BEST selection of blush colors and eye shadows IMO).

i second bobbi brown. most of my makeup is either bobbi brown or laura mercier. i use bobbi brown's skin foundation and love it...it's my favorite out of all the foundations i've tried. it's not too heavy but still covers up the redness i have around my nose and other imperfections. it's expensive but totally worth it and lasts me a long time. i also use laura mercier's translucent powder and the bronzer. laura mercier also has some really nice eyeliners and different options than the typical pencil.

i always go to nordstrom for my makeup and both laura mercier and bobbi brown have done\ consultations for me. last time i went to bobbi brown i told the makeup artist i wanted makeup for a smokey eye and a more natural look and she went through both for me. i bought a lot of makeup but i use all of it...which i never did before. personally, i don't like buying makeup unless i know how it goes on.

    You ladies have me thinking...

Maybe I should just really dive into YouTube how-to's and whatnot, since I refuse to start using foundations and whatnot (once you start, you can't stop ). I guess since my makeup desires are pretty simple (a little eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, and maybe blush), I should be able to figure it out if I really sit down and push through it. And since you all are giving such great product advice, maybe I'll just buy a few things to get started.

J.D.--I was trying to find this earlier. What's the eyeshadow you were recommending for people with blue eyes? I remember you were talking about a certain product in an older thread, saying it made your eyes pop and whatnot. Or would that product be too extreme for the effect I'm looking for?

    It's Loreal Bronze Star: http://www.amazon.com/LOreal-Infinit.../dp/B00194KCHC

It's perfect for everyday wear, I only use the dark bronze color, not the lighter one. You can put it just in your crease with a 222 and 224 brush and then use it as eyeliner in the upper and bottom outer corners with a 219 brush. This is what I do for a day time look, it will make your eyes look soooo blue!

    Brushes: http://www.maccosmetics.com/flash/br...der/index.tmpl

I say buy some basic colors, I would buy Bronze Star and MAC brown down. These are my two most used versatile colors. You can also use brown down as an eye shadow, you can add it to the outer crease for a more dramatic look with the Bronze Star, you can use it as eye liner, and you can use it to fill in your eyebrows. Then I would invest in a few good brushes (very important!) and then just add to that as you go....

I personally use bronzer MUCH more than blush also, because you can highlight and sculpt your face more when you use it in a number 3 motion on your cheeks, temple, and jaw line.

    Damn girl...you know your shit!

Is there a failproof bronzer out there? I got a cheap bronzer once, and I seriously felt like I was trying to apply brown glitter onto my face. Baaaad.

You really just have to try a few to see what works with your skin.... my personal favorite is NARS casino, but it's dark. They make a lighter version, it's not very glittery, but does a have a sheen. I kind of like the Laura Mercier mineral loose bronzer, but it doesn't last well and is kind of glittery.

What's great about buying a few nice products at Nordstroms is their return policy! If you don't like it, it's very easy to get your money back, not so easy when you buy at a drug store.

Physicians Formula makes good cheap bronzers, you can buy those at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, wherever.

Guerlain is a high end brand, but they're like the guru of bronzers. I still like the NARS casino the best though.
