Default Just how many of us are there??

How many dancers in the world, altogether?

I say 'us' because I am also curious how many stripclub DJs in the world. For that matter, how many prostitutes and other kinds of sex industry employees?

I am betting there are a million dancers in the world, though I could be wrong. Which could mean as many as 100,000 stripclub DJs (now there's a frightening thought!). That sounds a bit high though, even assuming 2-3 DJs per club employing 20 or more dancers altogether, and some of them a lot more.

I thought of this when posting about 'several hundred thousand' of a certain caliber dancers in another thread.

It's a tricky question. The tuscl reviews 2441 clubs in the US.

Worldwide though, sexy entertainment takes different forms.

In China, I have been asked if I want a girl sent up when I check into my hotel. In Thailand, you can spend the night drinking and playing connect four with a clothed girl in an open-air bar or just take her home.

Even at the gogos, the dancers don't "strip" and paying for lapdances is unheard of. (Grinding on your lap and flirting for hours is part of the sales pitch, not the end product.)

So... I dunno. I think there are way more than one million prostitutes worldwide, but relatively little "stripping" or "DJing" once you get out of the US or Canada.

Oh hell yes, there are probably several million prostitutes worldwide.

I do agree about there being relatively little USA style stripping (or DJing) outside the USA and Canada. As my esteemed colleague Melanie has pointed out numerous times, for the most part, the closest thing they have overseas are a very few upscale European 'Showbar' type clubs, and a whole lot of thinly disguised go-go bar type brothels. With increasingly easy travel and communications, we could see a lot more of them, though. You never know...

But I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few more stripclubs in the USA than even TUSCL has recognized.

According to this article, there could be 4,000 clubs nationwide.

I would give my left laser boob to see some data on this. I'd say Australia is somewhat comparable to US and Canada with their club setup. Would we be including retired dancers and the 'ripplers' as well? (dance for a week/do 1 photo shoot, then phase out). There's also the Japanese style hostess clubs (non-nude social companionship in a restaurant/lounge setting).

I also posted this question on another forum, and we have uncovered some interesting, pertinent data on the subject. As well as some points that render the entire question meaningless. But never mind that now, it's important to me that some sort of answer be arrived at, since I ran out of weed.

One question has arisen, that you have touched on with the Japanese hostesses--how do we define 'dancer'? For simplicity's sake, I would say a stripper/dancer should be someone who has taken off their clothes, on a stage, to specific songs. This would rule out the gogo dancer/prostitutes in Thailand who I believe just get up there en masse and dance around without stripping.

Population figures for the USA, Canada, and Oz: 310 million, 34 million, and 21 million. If we assume the ratio of population to stripclubs is about the same, and there are at least 3,000 clubs in the USA, that would mean maybe 400 in Canada, and another 250 in Oz. Though I suspect the other nations of the world have a lot less stripclubs strictly defined, we could arrive at a total of maybe 5,000 clubs in the world.

Retired dancers should count, I believe. As should women who have tried it for a night or two and dropped it. Assuming maybe 200 retired, temporary, and part-time dancers per club (not unreasonable if you consider some big clubs will have 500 on their list, not including retired). So there could well be 1,000,000 dancers in the world, altogether--most of them in the USA/Canada.

well, if we're gonna just talk about stripclubs as we know them in america, does it include clubs where girls don't strip but do give lapdances (a lot of bikini clubs)? and more importantly, are we including extras girls, since they make most of their money on acts of prostitution?

also, if we're talking pure stripping, don't a lot of stripclubs in australia include toy shows?

my guesstimate: well under a million strippers, well over a million prostitutes (though likely under a million prostitutes who are doing it of their own free will)

Also, some performances are typically reserved for an audience of one (ie. peep show performers). So then for definition, perhaps performers who's audience is typically 2+. Then there are the feature dancer agencies (which usually list all of the girls on roster on their website). If you can figure that a certain percentage of them have traditional club residencies (and would already be included in the head count), the remainder would be the exclusive touring feature dancers that need to be factored in as well. Then you would also have to account for overlapping (girls who work for multiple agencies). For example, Pure Talent currently has 83 girls on roster (not including Ron Jeremy and the male troupes).

I'd be curious about this. I don't know who true this is, but I've heard first world countries often have brothels (legal or illegal depending on the area)and strip clubs. This is certainly true in the US and Canada along with England and Australia, amother cother countries (I used all those countries because there are dancers here from all the countries). From what I've been told from visitors to clubs I used to dance at that the developing and emerging countries often just have prostitutes and 'stripper' are basically prostitute.

I don't have sources but from various things I've read about 1 million strippers in the U.S. and around 5K porn actor and actresses.

Don't know about DJ's and escorts.

The Japanese sex industry is very underground to foriengers and a billion+ dollar industry on it's own! The host clubs are really just the tip of that iceberg. There's a woman named Joan Sinclair who worte a book called "Pink Box-Inside Japan's Sex Clubs" who had a chance to explore that world.

In Victoria and NSW there are definitely no toy shows in clubs, its illegal, a club would be closed immediately if they did. Can't speak for the other states in Australia because I'm not familiar with the relevant legislation.

What about private party strippers? At least 2/3 of my showgirls do private parties exclusively.

Is interesting to ponder how large our industry is on an international scale.

I would include private show strippers. But it's hard to figure out where to draw the lines with these definitions!

For instance, I would exclude the Thai 'Go-Go Bars', where they just get up onstage en masse and dance around so the johns can pick one or more of them out for the paid sex.

But I would not exclude the strippers who were far more hookers than strippers up in a couple clubs in Daytona, for instance. Because they were dancing, in turn (within a stage rotation), to specific songs while undressing. perhaps this is an arbitrary distinction--it's just the way I look at it.
