    Search Pagans, Buddhists, Wiccans, etc...

I admit to being halfhearted in terms of religion. I was raised Catholic, turned Satanist for 2 weeks when I was 14 (I was also banging a 21 year old unemployed bassist for a death metal band in El Pisshole)

I think I am too angry to be a devout Buddhist. I admire their tolerance and compassion however.

Once in awhile I go to Pagan Pride day in Albuquerque or hit the Beltane celebration.

Any Wiccans, pagans, Satanists, Buddhists around, half hearted or devout?

Any in the Philly area in particular?

Half-hearted pagan here. Back when I lived in Hampton I was more involved as there were some great pagan/wiccan communities down there. Now i'm just too damn busy / not willing to drive 5 hours to go to a festival

Has anyone actually read the Satanic Bible? Anton Lavey was a very intelligent, articulate and perceptive man.

I haven't read it in years, just picked up a copy the other day.

The Nine Satanic Statements outline what "Satan" represents in the Church of Satan:[8]

    1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence.
    2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams.
    3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit.
    4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates.
    5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek.
    6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires.
    7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his "divine spiritual and intellectual development", has become the most vicious animal of all.
    8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification.
    9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years.
    The Nine Satanic Sins

    1. Stupidity
    2. Pretentiousness
    3. Solipsism
    4. Self-deceit
    5. Herd Conformity
    6. Lack of Perspective
    7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies
    8. Counterproductive Pride
    9. Lack of Aesthetics
The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth

    1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
    2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
    3. When in another's lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
    4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
    5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
    6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
    7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
    8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
    9. Do not harm little children.
    10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
    11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don’t stop, destroy them.

    I'm Pagan.

I'm actually a certified first-degree priestess of the Correllian tradition of Wicca. I don't really follow that particular tradition much, but I guess I'm on a registry where people can find me if they want handfastings performed, etc.

I don't consider myself 100% Buddhist but if someone asks me what my religion is I tell them I am only spiritual and practice Buddhism. It is more of a philosophy and a way of life than a religion. In Buddhism we don't worship anyone, a lot of people think because of the statues of Buddha that he is a God and he isn't and said he never wanted to be looked at as a God, only respected and if someone ever prays to a Buddha it is only a way of showing respect. Another thing I like about it is you can be a member of any other religion and still be Buddhist, Buddhism is a very non judgmental way of life mainly to live a life of happiness, peace and enlightment.

Pagan, I was more Wiccan a few years ago but as I get older I seem to gravitate into more of an all encompasing non-label identifying space. Pagan instead of Wiccan, hetero-flexible instead of straight or bi. So yup, I identify as pagan.... Though reading the Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth, those feel quite fitting actually, lol.

Yeah, I kinda started out Wiccan, too. I think that Wicca tends to be the intro to witchcraft and paganism for a lot of people. I began to realize that Wicca was very unbalanced as far as energies go...it tries to present witchcraft in a nice, pretty, fluffy, sparkly, unoffensive way, and really judges people who aren't strictly into "white magic." Witchcraft is just a tool, and it's a little naive to view tools only in terms of good or evil. Wicca also tended to be way too gimmicky for me...way too many 14-year-old "Goth" girls wearing pentacles the size of dinner plates because they watched The Craft one too many times.

I identified very passionately as a Wiccan for many years, although in recent years, I have become very half hearted about it - too little money, too little time, etc etc. Keeping up with festivals was difficult when I was working three jobs to make ends meet!! Now, I identify myself as more of a kitchen witch - festivals and ceremonies have become less and less important to me, whereas the daily aspects of faith are more prominent.

You've made me want to read the Satanic Bible! I've always made a point of reading other holy books and researching other faiths, and read the Koran, Bible, Torah etc etc...but it looks like I have one more to add to the reading list! Side note - I would absolutely recommend reading "Sex, Sin and Zen" - its a Buddhist perspective on the sex industry, and is really well written!

I do fit into one of these, & I have been in positions of religious leadership for large local communities (300+ people) before. Keep in mind though I've also worked for non-profits of other major religious communities such as Jewish & Christian, where even meetings started out with some sort of prayer session wherein the employees rotated the responsibility to lead the prayer. The first time I went through that I FREAKED out, thinking I was going to be "outed" & my co-workers weren't going to like me. I learned a really important lesson though, usually the higher up a person is in their religion the more accepting people are of others. Its the people with intermediate knowledge of their own faith who often cause the most problems... they know just enough to point out to others what they do wrong at a very basic level, but not enough to see the bigger picture of reasoning & in some cases forgiveness. Many people call those I classify as intermediate religious knowledge as "fundamentalists", so I'm sure everyone has met at least one, & I think they do more harm than good most times.

I will say that I would NOT make a good Satanist in the least. I do not ascribe to some of the basic tenants:

    1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence.
    5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek.

The first primarily because I know for a fact that too much of anything is a bad thing. I've mentioned on here that I went on a V8 drinking spree as a child, & ended up in the hospital from my vitamin level being too high... but I LOVED the V8. Both humans & animals often over eat, which leads to obesity & if they regurgitate the food it can mess up the digestive tract. Sex with many partners, even "safe" sex, can help spread disease in situations where condoms break or you think you are in a monogamous relationship but your partner is with others. Not to mention that for many people "indulgence" would mean not using any form of birth control, leading to many children which could potentially cause physical harm to the body. I know these probably do sound like a fundamentalist perspective, but my experience is that modesty is often better than indulgence.

As for number five, well I have turned a lot of enemies into friends. If I had left them as enemies I'm sure they could have found ways to cause me stress - regardless of how many times you beat them to a pulp or do whatever else. I'm not a fan of stress or enemies, so I'd simply rather have them as friends, & in order to do that one often needs to turn the other cheek.

Yes, I would just not be a good fit for that religion... but I am plenty sure that I would probably get along just fine with many from it.

I'm sure many of you know these sites already but I LOVE http://www.religioustolerance.org/ & http://www.beliefnet.com/

If you aren't sure what religion best fits your personal beliefs try this:
    http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainme...iefOMatic.aspx

I should also say that I've dated many people of other religions, which can be very difficult. The easiest going relationship I ever had in terms of communication was with someone of my own religion. You wouldn't believe how many arguments with religious fundamentalists that start over simple issues like having sex or the ability to "date" - geez.

Exactly. I'm too...dark, to be completely Wiccan. Too much drama, too much vengeance, to much...well just too much. I'm all for healing and taking care of the world, that's a large part of who I am, but I also believe in grabbing people by the throat and dragging them into the fire if they push me too fucking far. Which is why I don't do labels.

My god! (no pun intended!!) but that's just silly...if it makes him feel better, you could give him the explanation that the pentagram is a representation of the four elements and man encircled by spirit...(then again, you could mention that Satan is theoretically an angel of god!!) guessing it wouldn't do a lot of good though...

I've met Anton La Vey's grandson, Stanton LaVey, he was dating and living with my roommate in Las Vegas back when I was traveling back and forth between there and Dallas. He was one weird cat. And very cocky, very white supremacist, neo nazi-ish. He hated all races and droned on and on about how the Jews are to blame for all the problems in the world. He would blab about religion and his family's history and beliefs. Very bad spokesperson for his religion, he really turned me off to Satanism.

Pagan here! Also wish I had more time/money/able to go to more festivals but I do incorporate on a daily basis and use divination (sort of like taro cards) a lot. I also started as Wiccan, but again, too form fitting for me also. I think it's so interesting how so many sex workers are Pagan/nature based, or a lot of us believe in the same basic premise!

I think what people often misunderstand is whatever way you choose to put out a spiritual energy for something, whether it be via rituals, the craft, prayer, etc... in the end it is all the same - simply putting intention out. It's like farming:

    1. Intent = planning
    2. Action = sowing
    3. Manifestation= reaping
    4. Show gratitude = "thank you" prayer, possibly pass goodwill unto other, etc.

The more a person understands that, the less they feel the need to sit down & formalize that first step because it becomes repeated. Most religions do use tools though when putting out certain intent or to help with focus, for example prayer beads, mala beads, rosary beads.

Also, its good for people to be able to differentiate between religion, & how one simply chooses to attain their desires... because they are not always one in the same.

The use of "umbrella term" also heavily relates to this thread. Just as Catholicism, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, etc fit into the umbrella term for Christianity, other religions are also lumped into umbrella terms. Some terms simply don't fit religion though unless you define it very loosely. For example a man can be a Christian, he can also use estimated wind, distance, etc to select a club for hitting a ball, causing a force of energy. He believes in the energy, but that doesn't necessarily mean he believes the energy to be a deity. However, he may not be a Christian, & his entire set of life beliefs & moral codes could come from playing golf, in which case under the loose term for religion one could say his religion is golf. My point though is that some terms aren't generally considered religion, thus you can't really discuss it the same as other religions. To most people golf is no more of a religion than science is.

As for the argument of white versus black when it comes to the intent stage, not many religions promote the idea of asking or planning ill will towards others. Again though, if its something that can be restrained by various beliefs, then it in itself is probably not a religon, but an action. Eating meals is generally not considered religion, but something that effects when/how/type of food that you can eat might be, particularly if it comes with a code of moral/ethical beliefs.
