Question Cutting own bangs (long hair)?

Hey all, happy holidays. So I have long (almost butt length) hair, med. thick wavy, & I'd like to cut bangs, hair is now all 1 length. I do my own trims, by gathering washed wet hair in a pony, with rubber bands going all the way down, snip off the ends. I have beautician scissors, should I try this?

No please. Just have it professionally done. The human wrist doesn't bend far enough for you to cut hair and keep the scissors parallel with the floor.

Mmmmmmmmmm long hair. don't get to see that much anymore.

It CAN be done.....but I also have butt length hair and I've ALWAYS had my bangs done by my stylist.

If you want to try though....look here:

NOTE: They ALL suggest that the best way, is to get them done professionally!

Hey, thanks! I don't think I'll do it. I do have the Jess Simpson clip in bangs.
    Btw, Hi Sargy-Wargy!

    Btw, Hi Sargy-Wargy!
I read your top post & was just going to suggest trying clip-in bangs first! I don't think I'll ever have real bangs cut into my hair again... I need to try some of those clip-ins though. How do you like yours?

I'd go to a pro. Bangs can look weird on super long, one-length hair. You're gonna need some layers, especially around your face. Keep the bangs long, too.

Agree, go to a pro!! One mistake can turn into really short bangs that you are stuck with

I dunno, I cut my own bangs, but I use a razor.
Guess it depends on what type of bangs you want...wispy, straight, whatever else there is. :p

NO don't do it! I have long hair and the three times in my adult life I cut my own bangs I was so sorry. Shoot, even when a pro cut them I was so sorry. It's always so much better in my head but the reality of bangs for me is that they suck and then I spend two years or more growing them back out.

Even if you love bangs, have a pro do it.

I trim my own bangs but I say if your hair is long with no bangs, go get it cut by a pro initially. Then if you are good at cutting hair you can trim them as they get longer.

first rule of thumb when cutting bang is ALWAYS cut them dry. your hair stretches when it's wet and is also weighed down by the water so you never get an accurate look when they're cut wet because when dry they shrink back up. if you get your hair washed before a cut, ask the stylist to just blow dry the bangs (it shouldn't take anymore than a minute or two), its one of the marks between a stylist who knows what they're doing and one who is fresh out of beauty school. i was a hair stylist for almost 5 years and the number one mistake i saw at the salon was when women, or their stylist, cut their bangs wet.
also, never jump into the deep end when cutting bangs. always start with side cut (or swooping) bangs, that way you can always go back later and cut more if you don't like it. trust me, it's the difference between waiting 6 month or 2 years to grown them out if you are unhappy with the finished look.

Well actually I returned them!^ They did not really match my newly touched up hair color. I am now considering getting one of the extension pieces at Sally's, they're like 8" long, & several inches wide, (they have many more colors than the regular clip in bangs), cutting to size, & sewing in clips. I asked the Sally's employee, & she said it would work.
