Rock on! Congrats!
It's not a huge diamond, it's an antique amethyst ring from the turn of the century. He knows me very well!! Let me see if I can get a picture. . . .

Congrats. When you say you knew it was a long time coming, you mean it's something you talked about? I don't really know your story of him, could you tell more about it because I am curious.
Congratulations! I like the idea of an antique ring. It's got history.

CONGRATS! YAAAAAAAY! I want to see a pic too!
Yeah, we've been talking about it for the past year or two. We've been living together for a couple years, have been together for almost three, moved across the country together. We've been through a lot . . . I was there for him in a long stretch he was unemployed and he was there for me when the industry took a sharp downturn and I went back to school, we're a good team. Neither of us will do the dishes, though. We make-up fights by making each other coffee, and we could never break up because we wouldn't be able to split up the three fur balls.
Anyway, here's the ring!
Congrats!!!

Thanks! I love it. I wouldn't have thought that purple an gold could go so well together without looking . . . pimpish? lol. The stones were cut very well, too. They sparkle!
I'm going to have to get it sized down, though, which is going to be a bitch. I have a ribbon tied around the bottom as a make-shift sizer.

Congrats! Love the ring!!!!

First off, congratulations!
A lot of antique pieces have such intense detail that you don't want to mess with sizing. Normally when a jeweler sizes a ring they take out a chunk of metal at the bottom of the shank. If the ring has any sort of filigree or engraving it will NEVER look right again after you have it sized down... even if a jeweler swears up & down that they can re-engrave it. Plus, most women normally put on weight as they age, sometimes so much that they can never wear their ring again unless they get it sized to be larger. At any rate, if there is detail around the shank - DON'T DO IT!
The alternative is to have a jeweler put in sizing balls/bumps/beads like this:

Thankfully, the engraving is only on the top half! I was thanking my lucky stars for that one, since the pattern is very beautiful and very deep into the metal. I've heard that if I need to get it sized up, there's a way that the can only stretch out the bottom part if they heat it up and work it the right way. Do you know if that's true? I wouldn't want to stretch out the pattern. Apparently, DF had it sized up before he gave it to me from a 4 to a 6, but I have no idea what it looked like beforehand. . . .

Congratulations on your engagement!

congrats!!

Congraaats! And yes it can be sized up by heating the back end, so yaaaay!

Any ring that has engraving or channeling shouldn't be significantly sized down. Going from a size 6 to a size 4 will distort the engraving on the top, so you need to decide how much you care about that. If I were you what I would do is ask the jeweler to size it down from a size 6 to a size 5, & then put those sizing balls on the bottom inside of the ring to compensate it down closer to a size 4.
Rings can be sized down using just heat, but you can't really do that on rings with designs or any sort of basket. Basically the technique compresses the entire ring, so its only appropriate for plain bands.
