(snip)Sunpower Sees Solar Market Consolidating on Cost Crunch, Handelsblatt Says

The market for solar power equipment will consolidate as only those companies that can reduce their operating costs will survive, Handelsblatt reported, citing Sunpower Corp. Chief Executive Officer Tom Werner.

Companies that cover all steps in the production of solar panels can cut expenses more than those specializing on individual components as market conditions become tougher over the next five years, the German newspaper said, citing an interview with the CEO.

Sunpower aims to halve its production costs in the next five years and will take a decision on building a plant in 2011, Handelsblatt cited Werner as saying. The company will probably locate the facility in Asia, as wages in the region are lower than in other markets, the newspaper reported.(snip)

Put bluntly, American and European Solar companies are effectively using the taxpayer funded subsidies they are currently receiving to finance the construction of manufacturing facilities in Asia ! Or viewed another way, American and European taxpayers are seeing their tax money used to facilitate offshoring to Asia of future solar jobs !

Obviously this is good news for senior management of these American and European solar companies, who will see company profits thus their bonuses increase as a result of Asia's much lower manufacturing cost structure. 'Rich' investors in these American and European solar companies will also share in the increased future profits = as well as possibly receiving 'tax credits' which can in turn be used to reduce taxes due on conventional investment earnings.

But, for the most part, 'middle class' Americans and Europeans presently working at solar companies will soon find themselves out of a job ! They will also find themselves paying higher than necessary electric rates along with every other American and European who is forced to buy electricity with a solar component !
