If your just beginning I would just go to the goodwill or similar store and buy cute tops and such to snip and sew. I'm one of those people that go in, find something I like, look and think hard what I would do with it and if I can come up with a cute outfit I buy it.
If you want to start from scratch you draw it out first, measure, then find the fabric. I would color it also so you know what colors you like the most.

You should get a video or two on sewing and especially sewing with spandex. It's really easy. I learned to sew from Home Ec and from my mom and it's saved me an assload. I even do my own weaves so I can change my look on a day's notice if necessary. Go for it!

I'm pretty particular with the way things lay against my body, I hate seeing obvious seams. The best thing you can invest in if you are serious about this is a good serger, because a lot of the really great costumes in our industry can't even be made appropriately with a regular sewing machine.
If you don't want to go that far yet, start by buying simple clothes & embellishing them with hot fix crystals, beads, sequins, etc.

You can pretty much reverse engineer your favorite bikini by undoing the seams, copying the pattern onto your new material, cutting the new material to match the old bikini, and sew the pieces of new material together to form your new bikini. A $100 Brother sewing machine always worked fine for me which you can get at Wal Mart. For material go to Michaels or JoAnns. They have a section specifically for bathing suit material.

I like looking for sequined pieces at a thrift shop (you know, the really heinous mother of the bride dresses or the cocktail dresses of the late eighties) and using E600 glue (it's machine washable once it dries) and pasting pieces of the sequined cloth onto an outfit that I'm tired of, say, a corset. You can also sequin your shoes![]()

This sounds like an AMAZING idea also!!! I'm in dire need of new outfits and the ones in the store next to my club are So ridiculously expensive, and made really really poorly. Of course, I have NO idea how to make it better than that..or even how to sew, though I tried watching and learning from my grandma..is there a youtube 101 video sewing for idiots lol..

turn your favorite dress inside out, put it over fabric that you plan to use, trace your dress both front and back, remember to draw an inch away from your pattern so it isn't too small and sew the two pieces together.
