Default Dying hair from brown to black.

(AH, I meant to put dying hair from brown to BLONDE!!...lmao)
...we really should be able to edit titles...lol

My hair has been every color of the rainbow, except for blonde.
I actually am dying to go blonde now.
However, my hair is a chocolate brown.

I have bleached my hair before (and won't do that...at least not myself) and it screwed my hair up...BAADDD.

So, my question is, how hard is it to take your hair from a dark color to a lighter color?
Can I go to a salon and can they do it in one session?
Or would it take multiple sessions?
Also, how pricey would something like that be? I live in a small town, so there's no beauty schools I can go to for a discounted price.

Is it possible to do myself??

I've attached some pics...of my hair color now, and the hair I really want.
(First pic, I have extensions in...my hair is a little below my shoulders..and it looks almost black, but it's a really dark brown)

Any suggestions? Thanks for any help in advance.

Your hair is pretty dark, and since it's dyed brown, it would be especially tricky to do yourself, so I wouldn't recommend it. Your hair would be good and fried.

And whether it takes one session or more depends on your hair type and condition, what your natural color is, etc. A good hairdresser won't be able to give you a definitive answer until she looks at your hair.

I would guess it would cost about $100-200 per session depending what area you're in.

If you did it yourself, it would be very hard unless you were experienced with bleaching hair. It's hard enough to get all of your hair covered evenly with lightener and toner, and even then, since your hair is so dark, you'd have to process it multiple times in order to achieve the level of blonde in that picture.

People who bleach their hair at home often find themselves spending two or three times as much money getting it corrected at the salon. Your best bet is to save up and get it done by a professional.

Most salon professionals will probably tell you the best way to go blonde is by doing a heavy highlight. It won't be super light the first time or two, but it won't destroy your hair.

I would go to a salon ~ your hair is gorgeous BTW.

My hair is naturally light brown/dirty blonde and I lift it successfully to a level 9 beige blonde at home after going through a billion mishaps and mistakes. You would have to lift a lot higher than a few levels to get to where you want it to be and your hair is fabulous ~~

Your hair is freaking gorgeous! But like I said do what makes you happy babe... Just don't do it yourself, please! Chris' hair is breaking off because of the bleach that we used!!!

I would go to a salon. They may strip the color out and put new color in. When I originally dyed my virgin hair from my natural dark brown to platinum blonde it took 12 hours. It did not turn out the shade I liked but I knew I had to wait a few weeks before I did anything else to it to repair the damage. I have had a ton of light brown and blonde highlights done and it only took 4 hours-depends on the stylists, your hair, what you want to do, etc. Be prepared though to sit awhile.

My hair is naturally black/brown. A while back... I went to blonde from black dye without much of a problem or damage. (see attatched picture where I am covering my makeupless face)
Honestly... it really depends on whether or not you know what you're doing. Since you don't... I'd say go to a salon. But find one where someone you know has had a similar color transformation done (and done well!) and go see the same person as them. Going to an unknown person at a salon is really a gamble, sadly. :\

As for price. It varies a lot by location... Oh... and at a lot of places... if your hair is clearly dyed... they'll call it "color correction" and charge you double the price.

Try grabbing a bottle of Color Fix from Sally's for $13 (you should be able to use the bottle 2-3 times to help pull color out) to see how much color you can lift out of your hair by yourself. It doesn't hurt your hair at all-- it just helps pull out dyes. Just beware that dark dyes like black, when color removed tend to turn reddish (which I didn't mind when I did it.) If you're hell bent on doing this, I would say do this, and then go into a hair salon and start by having them do all over highlights and then just keep getting more and more highlights done. You'll probably be a strawberry blonde for awhile but your hair shouldn't be damaged-- but yeah-- do your research about who you go to.

I've done this myself a couple of times with great results, and would be happy to tell you how, but I've read that women shouldn't dye their hair blonde while they're pregnant? I tired googling to find a decent article to link too, but there's nothing really 100% concrete or from a reputable source. Best maybe to ask the Doccy before you give it a go?

From the looks of your makeover thread you'd look awesome as a blonde. How light are you planning to go?

My doctor said dying my hair is totally fine.
I had bleached and dyed my hair multiple times with Gage (of course after making sure it was okay) Dr's say it's not a problem at all.

I would have to end up doing it myself though.

I wanted to do something like one of these:

Second one is probably more realistic as easier. I'm going to go though my old posts on dying black hair blonde... I think I've typed out the process before.

    Found Ittt!!

The best way to change your hair color is to go to a salon and have them do it. Mind you, I always find it most fun to do my own. Best is to go in steps. You can lighten your hair to a reddish brown, and go blond from there. I went from Dark Brown, to Dark Red brown, to Lightish Red to Blonde on my own and Had fairly good results along the way (I'll try to attach pictures).

Your hair won't fall out unless you're allergic to the dye, or apply very high volume bleach right at the roots. Dying your hair WILL damage it. How much - I can't say. My hair is very fine, but I have a decent amount of it, and it doesn't damage easily, but everyone is different. Also, if you go really light blonde you're likely to lose length. I lost about 3 inches when I went blonde (but I wear extensions so I don't really notice it, lol). If you do deep conditioning treatments you'll preserve the health of your hair. Also, you should only wash it 2-3 times a week (you get used to it, trust me).

    Well, because it's taking forever to upload my pictures, I'll type out how I lightened my hair at home (don't get me wrong it's still best to go to a salon);
ColorZap - advertised as a hair color corrector but will lift regardless of whether or not you have dye in your hair already. Depending on how dark your hair is already, and how well it takes to lifters, you should get a medium red to bright orange.
Red Dye - You can use a red dye like this, mixed with a 20 vol. developer to give you a really sexy fiery red.

    Then if you want to go blonde after a few weeks;
Bleach mixed with your 20 vol developer will lighten your hair 3 more levels or more. You can add a packet of UNRed to the bleach mixture to take the bronze out of your hair.
On top of that an ash-type blonde dye will make your hair look lighter and take out more of the red. If it's STILL orange/bronzy after that, then try a toner. It looks scary, but your hair won't be the color of the picture in the link. It just cancels out the yellow/orange tones by adding Blue/Purple tones.

In between use a deep conditioner, like Ion deep conditioning protein packets. Can't find the link, but Sallys has them.

    Anyway, best of luck!

I hope all the links still work.

A few amendments to what I've already typed - if you're not scared of a bit of lost length, and your hair is pretty tough the red step in the middle isn't really necessary. Just give yourself a day to bum around the house in between lightening's, and give your hair a nice protein treatments and lots of conditioning.

When you work each dye/bleach/product through your hair, have a friend help you to get it as even as possible. It's really important to not leave any sections without product, and to have the product evenly distributed. Also, try and get the stuff in your hair as fast as you can. First time I lightened I took about 30 minutes to work the product through (starting with the bottom layers) and the bottom half of my hair was WAY more light than the top, and a little over-processed.

Imma try and pic whore this up a bit...

    Wow! That looks great!
Thank you for finding that for me.
All the links work great...and the price is just right for me LOL

With all the bleaching and dying I've done, the ONE time where my hair broke off was when I went to a blue. I think I didn't mix the bleach right or left it in too long..it was like gummy in my hair.

I mean, I know I've fried my hair, but it never broke off like it did when I went to blue.

How hard is the upkeep?? Because when I had my fire red hair, it was such a PITA to upkeep. It faded super quick.

Yeah - I did the brown to blonde transition while I was taking a break from dancing, so cost was a really important factor for me.

I think the upkeep depends on your natural hair and the kind of blonde you want. I have a natrual red undertone to my hair so it's kind of difficult to keep up the ashy look I like. Purple Shampoos take out he brassyness, but they're expensive. These drops can be used in place of the UNred drops I recommended to you, and can actually be put in your shampoo or conditioner and it will work the same as the expensive purple shampoos. Also, the iron conditioning packets I mentioned are about 99cents each, and usually once a month Sallys will have a 2for1 sale on them....for that quality of conditioning you can't be 50cents a packet! So....even if your blonde ends up being high maintenance there are ways to cut costs.

Red is SO impossible to keep up. I have red in right now and it keeps fading to this nasty coppery colour. I'll be dying it a light brown this week, and probably add some blonde highlights by the end of the month. I love red but it only looks good for about 10 days after I dye it.

With the blue hair - it sounds like you didn't use enough developer (if it was gummy), and so there was too much lightening powder. That's probably what fried it.

BTW - I'm no hairdresser and there's probably going to be a lot of people who disagree with my home grown 'technique' (if it could even be called that) so proceed with caution! I'd feel like crap if you did what I did but your hair broke off.....be veerwy, veerwy careful.

I went from being natural dark brown ...

    to blonde

    then to lighter blonde

doing it myself. I used quite a harsh bleach (two times) to get that colour and then put an ash toner on it.

Ive chopped my hair off now cause it kept snapping due to the bleach, but when i go back blonde in the next few months im going to a salon, i got quoted about £80 for a full dye but they recomended that i just start with hight lights and gradually go full head highlights with lighter and lighter erm...highs? to minimalise damage!

    Conditioner has saved my life!

(sorry for the massive photos!! I dont know how to do it as an attachment!! )

My hair is pretty much that color now in your first pic.

See...I think I can do this. If my hair falls out, that's what extensions are for..LOL

(and the good thing about being pregnant, hair seems to grow faster and healthier) So I gotta take advantage of that while I can.

I loved my natural hair but im glad ive had a mess with it! Definetly go for it! Id never been blonde before and tho im back to dark (with red in) now im definetly gonna go blonde when ive got a bit more cash in the bank, the nightmare for me was the roots, the upkeep was a nightmare cause my hair does grow really fast, when i can afford to get it done (and re-done) profesionally then im doing it, i loved being blonde lol.

It was this colour for about two weeks too...lol i looked like the little mermaid hehe

Wow lots of advice.. I dont know if I can chime in, But I had my hair auburn brown and wanted to go back to blonde. It costed me 120 (at a high salon)... It could have easily ended up 80. Im not sure if this will help you.. but I remember the lady using HL-V lighter mixed with a level 10 blonde (cool undertone). She kept that in my hair for 45-50 mins... I remember it was boring waiting!!! Then she used a toner afterwards for 15 mins. It got me to a level 10 blonde with no yellow undertones. I wanted to write this, since she said m hair was damagd enough she didnt want to use bleach and did it this way instead. If you are considering doing it yourself, there are corrocters that I have used in the past when dyeing my own hair to blonde. Comes in a little bottle with a dark purple color to get the redness/orange tone out.

Why not trying a beauty school. I know at the school I go to it only cost 30-50 dollars for permanent hair color. Go twice in a month and you can get there. Just moisturize the hell out of your hair before in after. Personally the Motions Creme Conditioner is my favorite for dry hair.

I would definitely go to a salon, if only because you have got so many layers of dye on your hair that will react differently so you may end up with a bit of a patchwork effect if you do it yourself! I find that big color corrections are always best in a salon...

You should be able to get basically the result you want in one sitting, although it may be done with stripping, toning, and then highlighting to save damage. You can also try to strip as much color as possible out of it by shampooing with a baking soda paste every day - that sucks color right out!

Make sure that you talk to a lot of salons, ask about their color specialist, and don't just go to anyone. If you live in a REALLY small town, but are nearish to a big city - go to the city for the best of the best.

Cheap nails, expensive hair - because a bad nail day doesn't make you look like Rod Stewart!
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

I ended up going for it today.
However, it ended up a more strawberry blonde.
It looks SUPER red in the pic (I'm thinking from the flash), but I like it.

I want to wait awhile before I lighten it again...give my hair a break, it's a start though.

(LOL, sucks how it's not like I wanted, but I think with a couple more sessions, it will get there)

Here's the end (for now) results:

Heh, looks pretty cool! And 'right on schedule' to me - You'll get it lighter - but the break your taking right now will probably mean healthier hair once you do get it blonde.

I don't know how much free time you have (I have oodles) but when I was lightening my hair I watched a bunch of videos on youtube of other girls doing the same. Some did it in one day, some over the course of months, but it was really cool to see their techniques.

Actually, that's what my bored ass is going to do right now.
