Default Re lasik: How strong is valium?

I'm ready to have lasik but I'm nervous as hell.
What exactly does it feel like on valium? Does it make you feel high or numb your senses? I
Also that spectum thing that holds your eyelids open, do you feel it on your eyeball?
How do they put it in?
Do they put it in before or after they numb your eye?

Here is what I posted right after I had my Lasik procedure...It's been about a year since I had it done. I will begin though by saying make sure your doctor is terrific:

    The procedure:

They give me a prescription for 3 valium in case I was nervous, but I'm pretty calm on average, so I didn't take any for the procedure-I used them post-op to help me sleep.

The whole procedure, including prep time, taping my eye (so I couldnt blink), laser, post time (putting in antibiotics and anti-inflammatories) was less than 15 minutes. I was really nervous about the taping of the eye, but they keep it so well moistened it was never even uncomfortable. The whole procedure was so ridiculously quick, I can't tell you the exact order of the process.

It was simple and painless: a few parts felt weird or odd, but nothing painful or dreadful. For instance, when they cut the cornea flap, your vision swims a little, and it feels like opening your eyes in under water. I could feel a vague sense of pressure, but it was very light and gentle, not at all painful. I was so comfortable, and it was all so easy for me, that the doctor and I chatted about hockey the whole time.

When my doctor was done, he told me to sit up, and asked me what I could see. For the first time, i could read the clock on the wall.

At first it was weird...it was like being underwater with your eyes open...I could see but it was a little distorted. On the way home, I had no pain whatsoever, but my eyes felt a little dry, which is normal.

The doctor had told me to go home, eat, take a valium (to help me sleep) then sleep as much as possible. (The valium didn't make me feel high or anything, it just made me feel very relaxed and a little drowsy)

When I do sleep for the next week, I have to wear goggles so I don't accidentally rub my eye or get poked with a pillow or something haha. They're pretty comfy though.

When I woke up after a 6 hour nap due to the valium, everything was crystal clear. For the first time since I was 5, I could actually see the TV...I dont mean the stations or shows, I mean the TV itself. My entire life, it's just been a giant blurred lump, indistinguishable from anything else in the living room.

I wasn't in any pain. When i first woke up, my eyes just felt very dry, like they do if you stay up too long. I have to put in drops for a few days 4 times a day, and once I put them in, my eyes felt totally normal.

My doctor actually called me Thursday night to make sure I was okay...and I told him I was fine, but bored out of mind! I wasn't allowed to read or watch TV for the first day, so I was going a little nutty.

I finally downloaded a book on my Ipod, took another valium to sleep, then crashed into bed.

I had my post-op appointment this morning to make sure I'm okay, and they did another eye test on me. My eyes are AT LEAST 20/15. I could read the very last line of the eye chart with ease (This from the girl who couldn't see the chart, let alone the giant E, two days ago

This is easily the best decision I have ever made.

Now a year later, I still have 20/15 vision, no dryness or discomfort, and it's just awesome

So valium makes you feel very sleepy?
How they put the spectum into your eye. Does it have screws or something. Maybe no one mentions it because they don't feel it.

Valium didn't make me feel super tired, just very relaxed, like I had just soaked in a bubble bath or something. It was comparable to having a glass of wine for me.

I really can't tell you how they put it in, I never felt it, and as I said, it was done so quickly, I don't really remember the order of the procedure. I will say that it was there for maybe a minute, and if the doctor hadn't said "we're putting this in, but dont worry, it won't hurt" I never would have noticed.

Also, the "spectum" as you put it doesn't hold the eye open.

They tape the eyelids open, which is fine becaus ethey keep the eye so moist.

A small little suction ring goes around the eye to help direct the laser , but that just rests gently on the eye-again, you never really feel it.

Glad I can help! If you have any questions about the surgery or anything post-op, send me a PM. I'm the biggest Lasik spokesperson, it's completely changed my life. Best decision I've ever made.

Kandie had much more helpful experience than I do, but I'll share anyway. I've had several operations on my eyes, and I'll tell you that valium calms you to the point that you won't be worring whether it will calm you down enough. Make sense?

First cataract I had removed, I was so chilled out on valium that I was completely cool with the doctor sticking a needle right in my eyeball to numb it about a half hour before surgery.

He was like "I'm going to inject this into your eye. The eye drops numbed you a bit, so it shouldn't hurt much" and I was all like "Okkkaayyy coooolllll doc......". Now thinking back on it I get sweaty palms, I can't believe I wasn't hyperventilating!

The drug was created to seriously chill people out. It does a damn good job too. Don't fret about fretting.

4ever - thanks for that commentary about valium. I'm not intending LASIK (makes me too nervous, afraid of screwups, glasses once saved my eye from an accidental injury), but it's good to know that valium works that well.

It may sound dumb, but one of the reasons I'm afraid of getting older is the prospect of an eventual cataract operation. I really don't like getting things stuck in my eyes. It's good to know that valium should work well enough.

Cataract surgery is a hoot. Really. The pain meds, Valium and downtown with people looking after you every whim are enjoyable. They drugs you up so well that you don't ever feel anxious, and once you're well enough to be without the meds you have nice clear vision again.

One of the least painless and most rewarding surgeries I've ever had (and I've had LOADS).

4ever - Did they give you more than one valium to get that chill? Thank you for the vivid description. Cataract ops sound more frightening than lasik.

Kandie -PMing you with more questions.

I recall taking 2 pills, but I took them at the same time (it was 1 dose for the 2 pills).

And no problem. I'm sure you'll be fine. Sorry if I sound like a totally stoner for Valium, haha.
