Default Cutting down the heel on high heels?

Im 5'10" so I usually dont buy tall heels... (4" at the most if I really love em) but I found some BCBG heels that were toooooo amazing to not buy. So I did. But the heel is probably 4-1/2" or more and I wanted to cut it down. I know shoe repair shops do it, but I can't find reviews. Have you guys ever done this???

I take my shoes to cobblers for a huge range of things (as well as belts, bags...anything leather!) but I've never done this...If the shoes have a hard sole, surely it would damage them to take a lot of height off? I suppose a little height wouldn't be an issue, but I'd go to a reputable cobbler - if its just an extra half inch, is it worth risking the shoe? lol

That sucks - I would hate to have to stop wearing my giant heels for a boyfriend...let me know how it goes though - that could be useful!

Does it bother him ? J liked it when ID be 2" taller Than him in 4" heels. I think it's more accepted ( I mean people can see the heels so it's not like they assume you are taller ). I can relate though - it didn't do much for me to be taller.

He said it doesnt bother him.

Its not just when Im with him. I like to be tall sometimes, but these shoes are TALL compared to what Im used to. I used to always wear flip flops or flats because I hated being tall, but for the past few months all I wear is heels. I threw away my flats. (Part of embracing the woman in me, and also to celebrate being bunion free after 26yrs. lol) But these particular shoes, though beautiful, would make me happier with just a liiiiiitle less heel!

ok, i don't think you'd be able to do that. they have a flat part underneath the front of the shoe, and hacking .5" off the stiletto heel would make your foot tilt backwards and make walking very odd.

Hmmmmm well, i dont think anybody will notice that .5", I guess. They really dont feel diff than my other shoes anyways.

Ill just poke my butt out more, take the attention off the giant-ness of me.

I'm 5'10 and I love wearing heels! The taller the better for me. I'm lucky that my husband is 6'4.

From looking at the shoes I don't know that cutting them would help.

Yeah, I don't think you can just cut down heels. It would definitely throw off the balance of the shoe since they were made to be a certain height and are thus proportionate. You could ask a cobbler what they think, but I'd be wary of the potential waste of money on both the shoes and the cobbler if the shoe came out just fucked up.

It's like buying a Rolls Royce sedan....and then hacking off the roof with a buzz-saw because you wanted a convertible.

In other words....it won't work. The structure of a shoe is based around a solid 'skeleton' inside, called a 'shank'. This fixes the height and rake of the shoe, so that the sole and upper can be cut, stitched and bonded to form the whole shoe designed for that particular height. The heel will normally have a steel spine in it as well...so cutting may well be impossible.

If you cut off 1/2" off the stiletto heel, then you will fall over backwards and sideways. That's if the shoe hasn't snapped somewhere first........

You can see the structure of the shank and heel spine, underneath the foot in this image:
