    Default Dancing with Chronic Fatigue

Hi, I'm about to start dancing but I've had chronic fatigue for about 18 months. I'm 22 now. I got it after a bout of glandular (mono). I've been mostly unemployed for the past year.

I also have pre-existing depression/anxiety, which also affected how my CFS manifested what with the lethargic periods. But I just switched to Lexapro before Christmas, and my depression at least has been minimal. I'm very happy right now, even though my physical symptoms keep nipping at my ankles. These include recurrent reactive neck glands, and general lethargy.

I've been feeling energetic the past 10 days or so, but still had a few days where I've overexerted myself and felt my neck glands swelling. They react to coffee, chocolate and alcohol, all of which I've cut out, but sometimes just to a slightly stressful event, or socialising. These are a major concern, as sometimes they would get bad just from stressing about how I'd clean my room or something equally domestic.

The club where I'm starting this week has a 3 shift minimum per week. Not sure yet how long they'll be, but I'll try to do the minimum. Any other tips for not crashing? How to keep energy up during shifts (no alcohol or caffeine), how to wind down after work to get really restful sleep, any dietary, natural medicinal or exercise suggestions?

My current management plan: Pilates, yoga, or light strength and cardio a few times per week. Try to stick to healthy food, tonnes of fruit and veg, beans, some meat. For the past two weeks I've been drinking Berocca (B complex, mag, C, etc.) as I weaned off coffee, which seems to be working. I no longer miss coffee, and if I have a weak latte or a small Coke, I actually feel jittery!

My specialist recommended dairy-free in October, but I was on welfare and living with my bf. It was too stressful to organise seperate food as we mostly ate together. The idea is that if I earn decent money as a stripper I can afford better food. Going to try dairy-free again and maybe gluten-free. I've met a few people who had success with the latter. Maybe just gluten lite, cos I've got a big appetite! I made a big plate of rice, stir-fry veg, and satay chicken for dinner the other night, and was starving two hours later. Rice just doesn't fill me up like bread or pasta. I always need a sandwich after a huge Japanese dinner at a restaurant!

allo! i'm in melbourne and working as a peepshow girl and in other parts of the adult industry. i also have fibromyalgia and debilitating fatigue is one of the symptoms. i'm still learning how to find a balance between looking after my heatlh and working hard so i can set myself up for the future financially.

i recently decided after experiecing some burnout that from now on, for every 6 weeks that i work, i'll take off the subsequent fortnight... no exceptions! i'm very good at managing my money and budgeting so pulling this off won't be a problem financially. perhaps it's something you can consider too.

i'll keep thinking and post back here with more ideas. feel free to pm me if you want support from a local dancer with similar health issues

Hey girl, so sorry to hear about the fatigue. I work camming and do well. I can get on camera for 4 hours, and go back to bed if tired. IF you need something other than dancing, just chime in to the "other work" part of the forum!!! I have heard a lot about the gluten free diet, and that girl from the view had great success going gluten free, but It is really hard to do (i think), might be worth a try if it would change our life!

Yes, I was going to suggest you check out cam. Wow, you live w/a lot, & on a smaller budget. I would think dancing would be really stressful, even w/shorter hours, altho I'm in the US.
Anyway, I'm not a lot of help, but I wish you the very best.

One of my friends has chronic fatigue - she is gluten/dairy and alcohol free and takes CoQ10 supplement and L-Carnitine (sp) to keep he on track. She also has really learnt to listen to her body and tried a lot of alternative therapy to help with her anxiety etc.
    Good luck!
P.S I am gluten free now - once you have done it for a couple of weeks it's actually easier than you think (although a little more expensive) The thing that helped me was meal planning- having all my snacks in bags etc so I wouldn't grab junk as a replacement.

I'm gluten free and vegan - I've never felt better in my life!! Planning meals is definitely a must, and in terms of getting hungry - I track my nutrition to ensure that I am getting appropriate amounts of protein and carbohydrates (the main nutrients that help you feel "full". I also make sure that I am eating every 2-3 hours, so that I am always snacking when I feel hungry.

Other things that you can do...I really don't like Berocca (doesn't that have sugar in it for the orange flavor?) so I would consider switching to a more healthful multi-vitamin as soon as you can afford it (unless I am thinking of a different thing...the little effervescent things?).

Bring snacks to work to keep your energy up, and have a look at the more "natural" energy drinks as well. Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water, and maybe take a cat nap before you get ready for work if you like napping (I know some people hate it - I love it!).

For really restful sleep - look at some of the relaxation tracks on itunes or even on youtube!! Make sure that you are not eating or smoking right before bed, and try to get into a before-bed routine to send the signals to your brain that it is time to go to sleep. Maybe sit with the TV off, cup of chamomile tea, read a book for half an hour and then moisturize and go to bed..

One more thing - meditation...its awesome. Nuff said.

Good luck - I think that it is amazing that you are starting to do this to give yourself the life you want!
