Default Idiot clients who think they know better

Be warned - this could be long.

What should have been a relatively cruisy Saturday night turned into mega dramarama, because of one idiot.

It all started when a repeat client contacted me late on Tuesday night to book a toppy and two shows for a bucks nght the coming Saturday. Short notice, but I managed to fill what he was after.

When confirming all the details the party address provided was inner city. My automatic question is: is it a hotel, apartments, private residence?

RC couldn't tell me. Party was being organised between my RC and the best man. I made it very clear I needed to an answer on what type of venue.

Late Wednesday I get a call from RC saying the BM is not happy with the toppy booked. I explained that with 3 days notice, they were lucky I even had anyone still available. BM announced he could do better. I asked RC to let me know if they find replacement so I can give my girl notice on cancellation. Meanwhile I'm thinking to myself "good luck finding a toppy available on Saturday night, they're all booked". Again ask what type of venue, still no answer.

Thursday afternoon I trying calling RC to get decision on whether or not the want to keep the toppy booking, and can't get through. I later find out RC's phone goes on "roaming" and he often has connection issues. This is not helping matters.

Finally on Friday I get a call from RC, they are keeping the toppy cos BM can't get his shit together. And big surprise, still can't get an answer on what type of venue.

6pm Saturday night, my toppy txts to ask what type of venue. (She is booked to start at 8.30pm). Explain that I've been trying to find out for three days, and will be in touch as soon as I can find out something.

Tried calling RC for next 2 1/2hrs and get through to his stupid "can't connect when roaming" phone. After a little exploration and investigation the toppy finds them IN A GUEST APARTMENT. Now at least I can let the showgirls know.

For those of you who don't know, guest apartments are notoriously bad choices for bucks parties. They are like nazi when it comes to any noise and more than a few times I've seen nights go totally pear-shaped because the clients get kicked out. This is why I always ask the question when take a booking, so I can adjust the booking deposit according to the risk of on the night cancellation.

The shows are booked for 10.30 & 11.30pm.

10pm get a call from RC - they've been kicked out. Why am I not suprised?!

As a courtesy, and in a vain effort to salvage the booking and the work for my girls, I contacted at least 6 different venues with private function rooms in the area. All of these venues responded their function room was unoccupied but couldn't accept a party because they didn't have staff.

Meanwhile, showgirl booked for 10.30 is sitting tight waiting for me to tell her if her show is cancelled or being moved to another location.

Eventually, 10.30 show was cancelled, and the 11.30 was changed to different venue.

So, I lost income, one of my girls lost income, and the bucks night boys had their night totally f****d cos the BM organising things made a typical mistake.

Guys think they can organise a party cheaper by hiring a guest apartment and providing their own alcohol, rather than hiring a licensed venue's function room. They couldn't be more wrong. There are a plethora of venues in Melbourne which provide free room hire on large group bookings. These venues are set up to entertain groups of guys, you don't have noise issues, and rarely if ever get "evicted".

The moral of this tale....idiots are everywhere, the majority are men, and they all think they know better than someone who works in the industry.

Word of advice guys, get you head out of your arse and listen to people who know what they are talking about.

@ Flickdreams - I think our industry in general is one of the rare few that clients sincerely think they know better than us. In any job you'll encounter "know-it-all" knob-jockeys, but in our industry the ratio of idiots:common sense seems to be grossly outnumbered

@Bunnihops - feel free to use. I seem to have a habit of coming up with great quotes. A business client of mine was recently in stitches laughing when I said "MEN - poorly designed creatures" She wants that on a t-shirt.

In all seriousness, this type of thing is so frustrating as an agent. Especially when I work my butt off to build a reputation for professionalism and reliability and some goose who wouldn't know shit from clay wrecks EVERYONE'S night. Ah well c'est le vie
