Exclamation Do anti-wrinkle creams really work?

Women spend millions of dollars on anti-wrinkle creams but do they really work? Dermatologist Doctor Stephen Shumack talks about the topic.

Personally I've never used anything other than a face wash or scub to cleans, sunscreen and moisturizer when it's needed. Of course keeping yourself hydrated as well helps. I've never had any problems with my skin.
I've always found the market for anti aging and other skin products hilarious and find it sad that people fall for these gimmicks.

What have you girls been using?

i just use a neutrogena anti wrinkle cream with retinol in it... its very inexpensive (between $12-15, depending on where you go) and i mostly use it because retinol may or may not be effective on wrinkles, but it has been proven effective to fight acne. i don't have severe acne, but i get blackheads and occasional whiteheads, and i can tell when i don't use this cream that they come a lot more. plus, this cream does a very good job at keeping my skin hydrated.

i think the more hydration your face has, the better... it plumps up your skin and therefore, pumps up fine lines. i can tell a difference when i've had a long night out drinking with friends, i wake up in the morning with all my makeup washed off and i'm dehydrated, and my skin looks so deflated (and i can see some fine lines wrinkles!!) the more hydrated i am and i keep my skin, the healthier and younger it looks.

i think wrinkle creams work to a degree, but are definitely not miracle creams... botox and fillers take it the extra mile, but aren't the only thing you should be doing to take care of your skin and keep it looking young....

maybe this dermatologist specializes in botox and fillers and makes all his money that way. who knows!

but i DO agree to keep out of the sun/dont overexpose yourself... i remember i tanned for 15 minutes 3x a week in a tanning bed for 3 months and noticed an incredible difference in my skin. not for the better. it looked leathery for a while on my face until i started taking better care of it, but the damage is still done. now i just use self-tanner and it looks just as nice.

    that's just my 2 cents.

Tretinoin works for me for fine lines. Its Retin A, just a different brand name.

But man did my face peel! lol Even a small pea sized amount for the whole face. I learned to do it on a week where I didn't have to see anyone. Did get rid of the fine lines around mouth though. Very happy bout that. Took me about a month and I could see the results.

Botox lifts and smooths the rest.

It's all in the ingredients, I think most prevert wrinkles and minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

As for wrinkles creams, I think the ones that use, Retinol (Vit A), Vit C, Vit E, Glycolic Acid (AHA), Hyaluronic Acid (HA), and lastly sunscreen prevent the appearance of wrinkles, and generally the the skin itself.

I do not pay attention to wrinkles creams, but think it is important to check what is in them. I bought face cream that includes Retinol (Vit A), Vit C, Vit E and sunscreen but the cream itself never mentioned wrinkles and was cheaper than your regular wrinkle cream on the counter. I think those ingredients work to prevent wrinkles, and use those only whether it says wrinkle cream or not. I think most are generally are rip-offs If I truely wanted to focus on wrinkles, I would just do chemical peels and botox.

Kinerase eye cream works. I know this because I started to get the same eye issues as my mother when I was 27 or so and now my eyes bear no resemblance to hers. No sagging, no crow's feet, etc. For creases, like nasolabial folds, I've tried them all and only a little Restylane works. Anti-aging creams seem best for skin tone, smoothness, maybe preventative care. Retin-A is awesome.

Chemically speaking, Retinoids, hylauronic acid and Vit C work. There is some evidence that other anti-oxidants have some effect, like Vit E and you of course want a photostable sunscreen. My pick is Garnier's AntiSunDamage SSPF 28. It's a new, stable C and spf that doesn't break down into some sort of oxidant. Yayy!!

ETA - What I use is L'Oreal's Skin Genesis=Aweseome HA at reasonable prices. Neutrogena Ageless Intensives, Deep Wrinkle Moisture, Night=HA plus the most potent form of Vit A that you can get without a script. Garnier's Anti-Sun Damage= New and stable form of C, also stable SPF. It'sn what most commercials say they are.

I am looking for a good retinol or anti-wrinkle cream WITHOUT any silicones or dimethicone. Any sort of silicones break me out terribly...any suggestions?

I feel very lucky to have very naturally taut skin anyway. Its a bit of a curse when its hot (hello shiny forehead!) but I've been asked in the past if I've had botox as its so smooth.
People do confuse me for older though, as I'm not 'cute' and don't act my age, so I'm very careful with my skincare routine. No tanning (lets rock the pale and interesting look) and I cleanse, tone and use anti-aging moisturiser twice a day (all Nivea). So far, so good. Ask me in 10 years whether or not it worked.

    Hy,
My mother loves The Principal Secret, by Victoria Principal. She always gets compliments on her look and her skin. When she treats herself to a facial, which is not too often, she is always told that her skin is beautiful, pretty cool.
She is gonna be 50 in April and she is always told that she looks 35. I'm very proud of her.
    She highly recommends this company.

I went to school for cosmetic and fragrance marketing at the fashion institute of technology. Most anti wrinkle creams do not work because they do not penetrate the epidermis which is the top layer of skin. They onlt sit on top of the skin which is not going to have any long term effects. The best thing one can do for their skin is wear sunscreen. Otherwise I would recommend microdermabrasion or IPL / Photofacial sessions for yournger skin. xo -Tati

I agree with those who like Retin-A. I do see a difference when I use it. The only thing though is that it dries out the skin really bad at first, and makes the undereyes look worse, before it gets better.

I also like to get glycolic acid peels done. After doing about 6 weeks of retin-a and 6 weeks of glycolic (with a two week break in between), this lady carded me to buy spray paint, and I was 26!!!! She told me I looked like a baby! Best compliment ever!

Other than that, I just use moisturizer before bed, drink green tea, drink lots of water, eat healthy foods, and try not to consume to much alcohol. No need for a bunch of commercial chemicals that will probably do more harm than good.

Oh and avoiding over exposure to the sun helps too. I can't really wear sunscreens though, because they make my face break out like crazy!

Are in the UK/Europe by chance?? There is not a lot of nivea products here in the USA, too bad because its a great brand. I look in all the stores and online here and we don't have the anti-aging nivea, only the firming body lotion.
I did have a family friend from Germany in her early 40's who used the German nivea skin creams and her skin was gorgeous and smooth ( and she smoked and tanned occasionaly)
curious as to where you buy yours..

One thing to keep in mind.. if you are using any creams that have Vitamin C or any form of Retinol in them, only use those at night. You do not want to use them before exposing yourself to sunlight due to the risk of hyperpigmentation and photosensitivity.

I am such a fool when it comes to anti-wrinkle creams. For the last year I've been using L'occitaine and Origins products. Love them!! They leave my skin radiant, super smooth, and they control breakouts.
But-- it's kindof ironic, I still have the wrinkles!!(so these products never fixed the problem they claimed they would), but I get complimented and asked all the time what I use on my face. Lol
Maybe it is some sort of conspiracy...

I saw collagen vitamins the other day and was wondering if this could work? I look pretty young for my age and am very careful about protecting my skin but I do want to do something to slow the process down.
