    Default Birth Control Issues

What are your experiences with various forms of hormonal birth control? I've tried 5 different kinds of the pill, and they all had different awful effects on me (made me bitchy, made me emotional, made me suicidal...). I got an IUD (Mirena) in October, and now I think I'm starting to have the same issues again. It took longer to come on because it's a lower dose than the pill, but I feel like those problems are coming back.

I really don't want to have it taken out, but if it gets worse I may have to. Has anyone else had problems like these? Have you found a solution?

P.S. I'm also on Wellbutrin (antidepressant) - not sure how that's interacting with these things, either. Thinking about switching to Prozac to see what happens before I try screwing with the BC again.

The clinic I go to suggested it, but the side effects are heavier, crampier periods than normal. Mine are bad enough naturally, I would die if they got worse >.<

Idk if Iwas allergic to it or what but Paragard was AWFUL it gave me the worst pain, heaviest bleeding worst periods of my f in life! I also am someone who cant take pills or any hormone. So I was excited about paragard..But no after several months nothing improved and I finally had the stupid thing removed and I was extremely relieved. Big waste of money in my case.

I have to second that--I was EXTREMELY RELIEVED to have Paragard removed. Those 5-6 months were hell.

I react horribly to pills. Have you tried a pill without estrogen? They're called POP pills. (progesterone only pills). They worked for me for a while but after about 6 months I started having side effects. That said, it works for most women who have trouble with estrogen. I got mine free from the health dept.

Mirena is a PO-thing...it's not as bad as the pills were, but we'll see. What health dept are you referring to?

This is my past birth control break down...

Pill: Never took it on time, so idk.
Nuva Ring: Great regulation, but bf complained of the feeling.
Shot: Made me the MOST hormonally imbalanced.
IUD *current: I constantly spot with this thing (I've had it since March '10), but hormonally I do okay.

Everything I've tried has had a slight effect... but the more I exercise and eat well, the less of an effect it has on me.

Every town around here has a local health department for the poor. They offer women's health, planned parenthood, and basic pediatric care. There's probably one around you, but what the offer varies by state, county, and town.

I have lots of problems with hormonal bc too - my worst one was the injection - I turned into a crying, miserable, snappy beast for two years. Maybe think of returning to some form of barrier method like a cap. Not totally convenient (though I think you can put it in quite a few hours before hand) but much better than messing with your body.

Diaphrams and cervical caps could be a good option for you. I'd definitely practive the pull out method with those though, as they are muuuuch less effective than IUD's or pills.

I've been on the pill for almost 7 years now. I briefly tried the patch and took a very short break from birth control, I'd say only a few months. I've been on BC so long that I don't even know what it'd be like without it. I never really had PMS or hormone related mood swings, so the pill didn't really alter that. All it changed was that now I can't get preggo while I'm on it and my periods aren't erratic or unmanageable (usually last 3-5 days at most). If hormones are not reacting well with you, I'd say the only solution is to avoid them. Don't wanna screw with your body.

the dose of hormones that Mirena gives is only local... it doesn't enter the bloodstream. I am extremely sensitive to hormones and haven't had a problem with it at all. It doesn't interact with any of my other meds and never has. Are you sure it isn't something else?

I talked to the clinician yesterday, and she said she's heard of this before...some women are just that sensitive to hormones of ANY kind. She said she'd recommend that I wait it out for the full six months if I can. I'm going to try and see what happens.

I turn into psycho bitch on synthetic hormones and gain 5-10 pounds of mostly boobs. I tried Paragard and had it for over a year when I just could not deal with it anymore. I did some research and if you are allergic to nickel and/or latex (I am allergic to both) you might be allergic to the copper as well. It is recommended sometimes to wear a copper bracelet for a few weeks to see if you react to it at all. I found this information after mine was in. My hair was falling out and I had cramps from hell with TONS of bleeding and fatigue! Since I have 3 kiddos under age 6 I was willing to deal with it until it got to the point where I had to get it out or go bald. I had it taken out on friday (2 days ago) My hair doesn't come out in the shower and I can brush my hair without worrying about it. Just be careful with this one if you have the other allergies I mentioned.

I was on the Ortho Evra patch when I was younger, and I hated it. It made me gain noticeable weight, I had severe mood swings, and the patch itself was incredibly annoying. It would start to look really gross after like three days (like a bandaid when stuff gets stuck on the adhesive and it starts to curl up and peel around the edges, which turn black), and you had to keep it on for a week at a time.

I just stopped taking my Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (which I only started taking in October) because it was hell. I gained something like 10 pounds in a month, it completely killed my sex drive, and I feel irritable a LOT. It even changed how my vagina smells (which sounds gross, but you wouldn't think it would matter until it happened). I stopped taking it a week ago, and I'm really looking forward to it all getting out of my system.

you should try the pargard IUD. I got mine when i was 17 (still have it in). i LOVE IT. i really feel like its the holy grail of birth control. i dont have any negative side effects except for longer heavier periods (10 days, 4th-6th days are heaviest) but i really feel its a very small price to pay for the side effects from other birth controls that im not dealing with!

How long have you had it in? I just ask because my "longer, heavier period" phase disappeared pretty quickly. I went from super, insane heavy for 4-5 days with pretty bad cramps every 3rd month or so to super-duper insane heavy for 2-3 days with almost no cramps ever. I sometimes do spot for a few days after, which I never did before paraguard, but wth, the peace of mind is priceless.

Only 3 months. They have been getting consistently less heavy though. And i have very light, if any cramping. only thing i have to complain about is the 10 day period, but the last 2 barely count and anyway its so worth it

I've been on Marvelon and haven't noticed any side effects. Not better skin, bigger boobs, mood swings, lighter period, nothing : (

From my experience... when one form of hormonal birth control has negative side effects... they ALL do.
So far... the one with the most tolerable side effects has been the Nuva ring.

I <3 Paragard. I can't say enough good things about it.

ALTHOUGH... it DOES take a few months for things to settle down on it. I got BV (bacterial vaginosis) the first two months, and my periods were LONGER. But now, I'm great!!! Just had to get through the adjustment period.

The only thing is that bf sometimes complains about the string chafing his dick. Still have to find a solution for that one. :-(

LOL! my boyfriend complains about the string too sometimes (only certain positions...) but i feel that a few soft strings ocasionally brushing his dick are a small price to pay for the shit we as women have to put up with! so i tell him to just deal!
