    Default Internet Question

I'm looking to upgrade my internet from DSL to cable and I'm torn between two packages from Comcast. They're running a special on their Performance package which is $29.99/mo for 6 months and the upload speeds are up to 3 Mbps. The second option is the Blast plan for $69.96/mo for up to 4 Mbps upload speeds. Would the Performance package be enough?

Also, my current computer only has 2GB of Ram and I want to buy a new computer with 4GB+ but I'm in the process of moving at the moment and can't afford a new computer, so will the faster internet make my stream a little better, despite the 2GB ram?

I have comcast's performance package (but it's only 19.99 here and the blast is 29.99.. i would contact comcast and ask for a better price!) and my video is never choppy or slow.. I just upgraded from a dell inspiron with xp with 1 gig ram (it was 5 yrs old!) to a sony vaio with win 7 and 4 gigs of ram. But I see NO difference at all as far as my speed or quality. I don't know how much of a difference you would see with the blast plan- as most upload speeds can be optimized through your computer (by clearing your winsock for instance) ... give it a go, and if you don't see a BIG difference in quality, then switch back.

The computer is sadly the least affective of your quality , First will be either the Internet , and the cam.
As ive said before i have a top of the line gaming computer not even a year old , And i figured my stream would cut through the internet like a hot knife through butter
But the internet connection i get is low , so my stream sucks.

As far as the speed , i agree with above, If you switch and it isnt worth the extra cash , switch back =-D

Go with the 4mps is not much of a difference compared to the 3.

I am on 16 mbps with rogers cable. for that price $50/monthly I say with internet speed the rule of thumb is to spend no more then 50 a month if you can avoid and it has to be over 3mbps.

Minnie, I'm pretty sure (could be wrong) that you're talking 16mb DOWNload speed. DOWNload speed doesn't make any real difference to camming (unless you're watching a BUNCH of guy's cams)...We as cammers are ONLY concerned with UPLOAD speed. Call your ISP, because that number is usually MUCH lower than DOWNload speed.

Ok, ladies...Seriously. Read up. My hubby installed networks for several years, and he KNOWS computers and networking SERIOUSLY well. He says:

"Your computer is a VERY VERY small part of your overall camming. If set-up properly, any 1Ghz Computer with 512Meg Ram can have a KILLER cam experience.

You DON'T need 4gigs of ram, you don't need QuadCore 3Ghz stuff..(although, if you want to GAME, Edit Video, Use Photoshop..all of THOSE things ARE helped by Mad Memory and Slammin Speed.)

WinXP !Ghz or better CPU, with at least 512M of Ram.

So what does matter? TWO things. The quality of your CAM, because we can't have a clear bright camshow with a shit cam. AND...

YOUR UPLOAD BANDWIDTH!!! Of ALL factors on your shows, the ABSOLUTE MOST IMPORTANT (and yes, I mean to be shouting) is your UPLOAD BANDWIDTH from your ISP...If you have a 200Megbit connection to your ISP, you can dowload movies REALLY fast, but if your upload speed is 256kbits, you will be a crappy cammer..MINIMUM I would do is 512k UP, but that is KIND OF CRAPPY...so try for 1Megabit or MORE. 3 Megabits would handle 3 full HD camstreams at ONCE, so you could multicam on 3 different sites with an HD cam. Regular cam? About 10 multicams on 3Megabits. So, 1-2 Megabits UP is very nice.

HOWEVER...UP TO 3 Megabits, does not mean 3 Megabits Guaranteed. Ask them what they guarantee for a minimum.

Also SpeedTest.net is YOUR FRIEND!! Use it! It will tell you your upload speed. And OFTEN DSL has a better guaranteed upload speed (especially if you ASK them for that) than cable. Not always, but often.

    B's Hubby"

There you go...I would trust what he tells you...He makes sure corporate offices can do video conferencing and stuff, and knows how this works REALLY well.
