Thumbs down Get A Job Already

For those of you who don't know me, a quick introduction: I've been camming for three months. I love it, and can never ever ever go back to minimum wage jobs dealing with stupid customers again. I've been a student at university for four years. I went to uni straight out of high school, so I've never done the "work full time" thing.

I absolutely could not motivate myself to do school this semester, I had no interest in any of my classes, or reading my books, or anything (which is extremely unlike me, because I'm a total nerd, sit at the front of the class, do extra credit assignments, etc.). So I dropped school. Not permanently, because I plan on taking courses in the summer. I can go back any time I want, really. My mom does not understand this. (Yes, I still live with my parents, because I can't afford any of the places in town that rent to people who have dogs - my puppy is my life, I'm not dumping him off at the SPCA just so I can have an apartment). Mom cried when I said I dropped my classes. After I explained it all to her, she seemed to be okay. She told me I'd need to find a job. *EYE ROLL* Obviously, mom! I'll look on craigslist for one!

I've been out of school for not even a week. I've been loving all the extra time I have to work on cam stuff, fix up my blog, start work on a new site, take pictures, and all that. This morning she's asked me three times already what I'm doing. She only works 5-10 hours a week herself, so she's ALWAYS HOME. I got a lecture about how I need to take things seriously and find a job and all that.

She wants me to have a job because she wants me to pay her for things. Like help her pay for gas in her BRAND NEW GAS GUZZLER. Or buy the groceries for all of us. Or pay the bills. I've been using the "I'm a student, I don't have any money" line for a long time. I help out when I can. But I don't want her to freeload.

Anybody have any ideas for what I can say I'm doing?? I need something GOOD that she won't question, but that doesn't sound so good that she'll want to do it too. HELP!! <3

Mmm. You are a freelance typist for hire.

That sounds so dull, but still industrious.

I think you should move out, though. Maybe not "into town" but outskirts. Duplex, townhome, small rental that would allow your baby. Mostly because your mom is going to annoy the -shit- out of you, and take your money. That does not sound like my idea of fun.

I would maybe go with the online customer service job as another option to buns aswell. As this would take alot of time and require private sessions on the net, I think camming can be suited to customer service jobs.

Its also not a set wage so you wont have to say X amount per month salary and it requires you to be on the laptop alot.

Well, I have a friend who works for xbox kinect from home using Alpine Access. It pays $9/hr. If you stay locked in your room most of the time I'm sure you could get away with saying that.

Or reviewstream. You get paid $2.50 to write reviews of products/services/cities/even people. I did that a bit since I type fast and write pretty good.

Then there's chacha, which is crap pay, but it does pay.

And then there is always Keen. Say you're a psychic or relationship counselor.

There's one more thing I tried for a short time but I don't remember what it was... if I can think of it I'll post it later on.

what ever you say make sure it sounds complex, hard and very stressful so nobody else tries to follow you into that line of work or ask too many q's.

The review one from above would cause havoc in the house as everyone would be wanting to do it.

Affiliate marketing; because you have a blog so it's possible you would be doing this anyway. Your mom can't do it because you have other bloggers as friends that you trade links with; even if she wanted to do it - she would need to start a blog first and then maybe after a year she would have enough blogger friends and enough web followers to be successful.

I once said to my mother (I don't live with her anymore, but she does stay with me every now and then, since I live far) I was teaching English using Skype/Livemocha (which you can actually do, by the way) to foreign people (I'm foreign myself, but I was an English teacher at a school for a while). Livemocha really hires people to do that, and you do have to use a cam. You can even set up a profile there and show her what the site is about, then you can say Livemocha only allows registered people to appear on cam during the live "conferences/classes". This way she wouldn't be suspicious if she heard you saying something or talking to someone while locked in your room (as long as she can't really hear WHAT you're saying!).

Some Bingo/Casino sites also hire (or used to hire) chathosts. If she's ok with that, you can use that excuse too.

I feel for you, MissEgo.....I live with family too right now. They had basically begged me to move back home, so having it thrown in my face (during arguments) that I live with them pisses me off.

What also pissed me off was that a long time ago, when I had announced that I received a nice tax refund, my mom blurted out "Well you need to start giving me gas money then" (she drove me to work, which was 5 minutes away). *rolls eyes* So I ended up just taking the $1 bus to work, but I had to wake up earlier to catch the damn bus that got me to work almost an hour early. *sigh*

Maybe next time she asks me to print something for her on my printer, I should start asking her for money for printer ink (that shit is mad expensive, ya know).....hehe.

My family thinks that I'm a freelance article writer & web designer and that I get jobs from Elance.com. This is what I was doing before I started camming and I made a full-time income from it, so it's a real job not a scam thing.

Although, like the poster above mentioned, I think I'm gonna start telling people that I'm a programmer now... working with C++ and Apache and whatever else so THEY'LL STOP ASKING SO MANY DAMN QUESTIONS!! I swear I've had like a dozen people approach me asking, "Hey how do I make money writing articles on the internet? Can you tell me EXACTLY how to do it step-by-step and hold my hand through the entire process?"

Although honestly, I WOULD give your parents some money every now and then if you're doing really well on MFC. It's good to contribute. I used to go out and buy groceries, fill up my parents car with gas, etc. when I lived with my parents even though they never asked me to. It just seemed like the right thing to do.

I used to contribute. I used to buy my own groceries, pay rent, etc. but they always want *more* and started to just expect it, and then I found out that the money they charged me in rent they were giving to my sister (who lives in Vancouver) to pay for her rent or buy her groceries so that she didn't have to work, so I stopped.

Maybe I'll just say I do some programming for apps for google? "No, I can't show you what I've created, because they only allow you to do sections of code, so that you don't sell the app to another company"...? I'm definitely worried she'll get all interested and want me to walk her through it and hold her hand the entire time!

There are some really good suggestions here but if I were you, while doing all you can do make $ on cam while there (hope there is a lock on your door - tell em the info you handle is confidential and you need privacy?) if I were you I would spend every spare moment searching for a place you can afford that accepts pets.

I agree ^ I would try to save up and move out.. They will bother you and you wll just get more annoyed living with them. I think it is ok for your parents to ask for rent or such to help with bills if you're a full grown adult.. but asking money for HER gas, is a no-no. Unless you drive her caar, then you should put in money.. But I just see them asking for more, and bothering you way more. Move out, you wont be able to use "Im in school" excuse anymore, and looking for places frees up your time

I tell people I do customer service for an insurance company.

As far as your mom freeloading though? Dude, you've been living with them rent free for four years. That's pretty darn nice of them. Do they keep you on their insurance? That's expensive! Do they feed you, and help you with clothing and books? Do they help you with school expenses? Be appreciative of your family while you still have them. 'Cause it sucks when you don't.

Just lie. lol like everyone has already stated.

I've been a full time student since getting out of high school also. I started dancing at 19 and told my mom i was working at an internet cafe. Few years later I started camming while living in my moms house. Id just tell her i'm doing homework or was doing some other kind of work like playing poker online (she knows im a big player)... So just say you work online. My mom doesn't speak english that well so I used to just make up complicated stories so she wouldn't really have room to ask. For a while I was saying that I opened up merchant accounts that would process payments for small businesses online so they wouldn't have to purchase their own merchant accounts and save fees. Lol, she didn't know what I was talking about so no questions asked. Honestly though, camming from home is a bitch if your mother is upstairs lol.

No, I've always had to pay rent, but they keep increasing it. I buy my food, but I don't think I should have to buy food for the entire family, including my sister who doesn't even live here. They say school is my responsibility (which I agree with) so all my school expenses are my own. I don't mind paying for my own shit, it's just that I'm tired of paying for all their stuff too.

OMG yes. And my family is very anti-closed-doors, as in, if a door is closed, they'll open it. I have a lock on my door, but one time mom tried to open my bedroom door and it was locked and her and dad flipped shit. "It's our house, we can go in whatever room we want, open this door." My door was taken off its hinges for a week.

Get out.. If your paying for what you eat and use then you should be allowed to have your door closed.. I say its not worth being there and with your own place you can cam more and without worry.

Oh hells no. It is time to leave.

I have AMPLE experience in sneaking pets where they are not supposed to be. When I was a single pet family, we lived in a no pet home, now that I am a six pet family we live in a two pet home.

If it's a private rental, just ask. I have a pet, would be willing to pay extra and sign a pet damages contract, etc.
Are you just really set on a swank downtown apartment or something?

yeah wow... i thought my mom was strict...
if you're paying rent, and can't even have your own privacy, get out.

now my mom could ask me for any amount of any, and i'd give it to her.. but there comes a point where you're being taken advantage of. If you're contributing your share that's good.. but you shouldnt have to contribute more than you're capable of...especially if you're a student. You just started 3 months ago? Give it time.. save up... when i started camming i was able to move out within 3 months, and able to buy my own condo after a year (with only camming income). you seem like you make good money, just move out. I make so much more money just because I have my own place now. No more worrying about keeping it quiet and getting caught by parents or room mates.

I agree with you, Miss Ego, and I was a bit surprised when someone posted "Be appreciative of your family," implying that you don't.

You have every right to be frustrated and vent, and doing so does not mean you don't appreciate your family. Whether it's their house or not, they need to respect your privacy (you're not a 5-year old) and not use lines like "We do what we want in our house" to condone barging into your room.....that shit is just wrong.

And them using your hard-earned money for other people's stuff.....no way...FUCK that.

I am at a university as well, and if you do not wish to live on campus or at home, around my area they have TONS of student-living apartments. This means that each person has an individual lease and all amenities are included (water, electric, furniture, private bathroom, etc.). I am not sure if they offer these types of apartments around where you stay, but it does not hurt to look into it. I do have two have roommates, but the only areas we share is the kitchen and common room. The plus side is my room comes with a lock, bolt & key to keep anyone out whether I am there or not. Also, some of these apartments do allow pets. I know it is not exactly what you are looking for, but it can definitely get you out of the situation that you are currently in. Especially, since you are already paying rent. Student-living apartments can run anywhere from $300-700 a month.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just have to start finding places I can afford and then asking if I can have a pet. Downtown here is actually the worst possible place to live lol I would be moving with the boyfriend and he needs to stay in the same town so he can go to work, because he does shift work so living outside of town would be hell (he's a wuss). Because he would be gone all night sometimes, he doesn't want us living in a shady area, cuz he's worried about me. The cheap apartments here are known for being drug dealer / crackwhore apartments, unfortunately.
Although I would really like an amazing apartment with a big soaker tub and a massive balcony and a walk in closet.... They're like $1200 here...

Funny story... on Friday night at about 10:30 my parents were in bed asleep, and I was downstairs watching Criminal Minds on tv. My mom came downstairs and told me "It's time to go to bed now." and she was all mad that I was still up. She can't hear the tv from her room, so it's not like that's why she was pissed, she was just ticked off that I was still up. I was like... I'm 21, it's 10:30 on a Friday night, and I'm at home, in my pjs, watching Criminal Minds... you should be happy you have a daughter like me!! lol

Oh, I didn't think about that! I looked into the places on campus but they don't allow pets at all, and I only checked out one set of apartments by the closest campus. Thanks!
