Default just added a second dog to my home, and its not going well.

i have had a amazing chow lab mix for 9 years. shes more like a cat then a dog. i adopted her from a pound and nursed her back to health.

recently i got a 1.5 year old male boston terrier and hes adorable. however hes having some serious seperation anxiety issues and pooping in my boyfriends shoes.

hes not fixed yet. he will be by the end of the month. he doesnt want to poop outside, even though the previous owner said he had no potty issues with her. hes even pooed a bit in his crate (he is crate trained). i rarely crate him. just when i leave or work out or sleep.

hes not peeing in the house just pooping. i take him out regularly.

    any advice??

If it is separation anxiety, pretty much only time and him getting used to his new environment can heal him. On the other hand many people lie about their dogs potty trained habits when giving them away, I found out the hard way.

    1) Give it time.

    2) continue taking him out frequently to poop.

    3) consistency, consistency!

    4) Consult a trainer/behaviourist.

    5) DO get him neutered (everyone PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER!)

    6) Ask your vet for advice.

How is the separation anxiety manifesting, other than with poop presents? How long have you had him, exactly?

ive had him 5 days. i know its not long, but my other dog never acted like this so im at a loss.

he just ate his poop, and threw it up on me. i almost puked. that has got to be the worst smell ever.

    Ditto to Jessica's excellent advice.

A veterinary exam will let you know if anything is physically wrong. (And, of course, the dog should be kept up to date with his shots.) Your veterinarian will probably be able to suggest a trainer or animal behaviorist if the problem is not medical.

Please remember that dogs love routine. Keeping your dog on a schedule (fed, walked, exercised at the same times every day) is a monumental help in getting good behavior from a healthy dog.

Please keep in mind also that he's only been with you for a few days; he's in completely new circumstances, which can be unnerving for anybody, human or canine.

Thank you for giving this dog a good home. Thank you for your patience in getting through this "period of adjustment."

Best of luck to you and your family in getting through it, of course! Please keep us posted; you've got a lot of friends here hoping for the best.

today i was vaccuming and he shit right in front of me staring me dead in the eye. sigh. i stood outside with him for a half hour prior and he wouldnt poop. i took him out after he pooped when i was vaccuming and still nothing.

now what? do i keep this up or should i crate him a lot until this stops? my older dog was never a problem to potty train.

Do you have a yard? Maybe he only wants to go indoors, so you could sit with him in his crate outside and kinda, transition him to pooping outdoors. Also, take him on hour+ walks after feeding him, eventually he'll have to go and you'll be outside and you can go mad with the love and treats after he does. He'll start to figure pooping indoors = you being pissed, but pooping outdoors = awesomeness and treats.

yesterday he only pooped inside once-when i was vaccuming. apparently it stressed him out.

he stopped vomiting. i added water to his food so it takes longer for him to eat, and he hasnt thrown up since. whew!

and hs getting a little more used to the baby gate. when i went upstairs to take a bath he hardly whined at all.

I had this problem with my rescue dog!

We found they'd fed him on 'vet recommended' dog food that was actually rubbish. Dog food is mostly ash and crap (at least in the UK). If you want the convenience of packet/tinned food, feed dogs cat food; cats are fussier - so their food is better quality.

We switched him onto a natural diet - simple, plain and bland dry biscuits with tuna, pilchards or pink salmon in tomato. Basically anything less processed. We started him out on scrambled eggs. He started to calm down a bit then, got less anxious. It sounds a lot of hassle to actually cook for a dog, but dogs are like kids and their behavior can be linked to what they eat.

He also had Kennel Cough so the house was a sea of poop and fluorescent green dog snot, I know what you're going through on that part!

The change of diet took a while to take effect - but it DID help. When you have him neutered you'll see a big change too - he should lose some of that possessiveness towards you - at least ours did, and time and routine will settle his anxiety.

Also long walks can do wonders, if you have time!

I hope you have lots of lovely times together!

yeah, my older dog has health issues so shes on REALLY good dog food. now hes almost all the way on her food and hes not puking. im not sure if thats it or the water im adding to it. either way, im very relieved!

no long walks for a month or so though, its winter here in the midwest and all the icy snow is not good for walking in the country.

Your scolding him when he poops in the house right? Then taking him out directly after?
My dog had HORRIBLE seperation anxiety and he is a great dane so his whines are super friggin loud. lol But with time, he got more used to not being with me constantly. Just give the new pup some time, I say.
